It was now the day before Forest's birthday.
At this point, he now saw it no different from any other day.
Nothing was going to change anyway. He was still just gonna be a kid, in an orphanage, with no pokemon.
He sits alone in the back of the Orphanage staring at all the pokemon nearby, wondering if one day, he could ever possibly own one.
Forest thinks that he wants pokemon more than anyone else in this world, and that's simply from a different world. His world didn't have pokemon, yet this one does, which sort of brings a sort of yearning that other kids his age don't have.
As he sits there time goes by, and eventually, it's time to go to sleep.
There was one big room in the Orphanage where the kids sleep. It was filled with bunk beds.
Forest went to his assigned bed, a bottom bunk in the corner.
He didn't understand why other kids liked having the top bunk, the bottom one was way cozier.
As Forest dozes to sleep, he dreams of a better life.
-----
Forest wakes up to the shining light glaring in through the window.
He sits up from his bed.
"Happy birthday to me..." He mutters to himself
He looks around and notices that none of the kids are in the room.
'Did I wake up late?' He wonders
Forest goes out to walk down the stairs, and when he got to the ground floor.
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY" a lot of kiddish voices yelled
"AHh" Forest was startled!
"What is this?" He continued
"Haha, I've never seen him scream before," One of the kids named Paul says
"It's your 10th birthday silly, the most important one!" Another kid named Sarah continues.
As they are talking, the Directress comes out of the kitchen with a cake
"Hehe" She laughed "These kids woke up nice and early to make this for you.
She placed it on the table, and he got a good look at it.
It was a vanilla cake with pink and green frosting with star-shaped sprinkles. 'Happy birthday forest' was crudely written on the top of the cake.
It was the ugliest cake he'd ever seen.
But he had never been so touched.
"How did you guys know it was my birthday?"
"The Directress told us!" A kid said
"Yeah, she said it was your birthday soon so we wanted to get you a present because you look so sad all the time."
Forest had no words.
"Thanks.." He said shyly
"Let's eat the cake!!" One of the kids said
"Yeah!" The other kids said
"Now now, we should eat lunch first, kids." The directress said.
Time passed and after the kids ate lunch, they got the cake out once more.
There was now a single candle on the cake.
"Make a wish." The directress said
Forest thought for a bit, before... whoosh
As soon as he made his wish.
*knock knock*
There was a knock on the door
"I wonder who that could be" The directress muttered
Forest followed her to the door because he was also curious as to who it was, they rarely ever got visitors here.
She opened the door, and there was a tall man who looked like a trainer, with a box and had a large Persian right next to him.
Forest looked at the Persian

'Woah!' Forest thought 'That's the strongest pokemon I've ever seen!'
"Hello Miss," he said "does a boy named Forest Mintz live here? Or did I visit the wrong place?"
"That's me," Forest said "Who are you?"
As the man looked at Forest, a tinge of sadness appeared on his face, before quickly going away.
"Hi there, I was a friend of your father's."
A look of shock appeared on Forests face
"Do you know what happened to my father?" Forest said quickly
The man sighed
"Regretfully, I don't. No one really knows what happened"
"Oh.." Forest replied
The man placed the box he was holding down and kneeled to get on eye level with Forest.
"My name is Walter, but all of my friends call me Walt. Nice to meet you, Forest. He said with a smile
"You must be wondering why I'm here, right?"
Forest nodded
"Well you see, your father often talked about how much you loved pokemon, and that he wanted to get you a good starter. But as you know, the incident happened and he couldn't."
"And, not so long ago, one of his old pokemon laid an egg at the Pokecenter he left most of his pokemon at."
"As an old pal, I wanted to do one last favor for him." He said with a smile, as he pulled something out of the box
It was an egg inside of an incubator. It was a light reddish color, with orange spots all over.
"This is little guy is yours now, Forest." Walter said while handing it over to Forest
Forest looked at the egg, he didn't know what he was feeling right now.
Shock, happiness, sadness. Many emotions swirled through him as he stared at his future.
As tears rolled down his face, he could fully determine one thing he felt fully.
For the first time in a long time, he felt it.
He felt hope.
