Chapter 4 - A Fallen Tree

Harry had everything set up and was beside Andrew and Noah as they all had binoculars on watching the bar. That's when they saw Jonas and Tom walk out, and then behind them, the demon.

"Alright, let's hurry to the first story in the car. Noah, you will stay here," Andrew said, walking to the car with Harry. They both slipped on their mask. Although Jonas and Tom didn't wear a mask because they had to go undercover, it didn't mean that they didn't wear a mask when possible.

They got into the car and waited for a minute. They wanted to make sure the demon was in the parking garage before they showed up.

Denzel walked across the street behind the two strange men who had offered a job that paid a lot of money. He could see the abandoned parking garage from the bar, as the two men had pointed it out. This whole thing seemed shady, but he understood that if they were going to do something potentially illegal for a rich man, then of course it would appear shady.

They made it to the parking garage after passing a few buildings. Inside was just like the outside. Plants were growing everywhere, there were cracks along the concrete, and mold gave the place a bad smell. They entered through the large car entrance and walked to the second floor. It was quiet, and to make some sound, Denzel decided to ask some questions.

"Where is the boss?"

"Haven't we already been through this, Denzel. The boss is on the top floor." Jonas replied with a smile. Denzel nodded, not saying anything more.

Denzel was still a bit dizzy from the drink, but his body did not work like others as it cleared the toxins out faster than any normal body. It was then that he realized that his drink must have been spiked. Denzel also realized this time that these men knew his name somehow without him mentioning it to them.

Denzel started to feel that this was not a job. No, these men were after him for some reason, but why? Denzel thought of any reason why these men were after him; after all, he had no money and he had caused no trouble. Then he remembered the bar fight yesterday and how he had used his ability to stop a thrown glass bottle from hurting him with his ability. Did anyone see him use his ability? Denzel questioned. There was only one person who may have had the perfect angle to see what could do, and that was the bartender.

It clicked like a lightbulb that turned on in his head. The bartender saw what he did that night at the bar fight and informed some people who dont like mutants. They planned for this all to go down. The bartender spiked his drink, they spoke of an opportunity for money to lure him out, and now he was willing to follow along, but not for long.

They were now on the fourth level, and somehow the strangers were behind him, watching his every move as he walked toward the top floor. Denzel was angry. All he wanted was a peaceful life, and now some mutant haters were trying to lure him somewhere to either kill or experiment on him. Denzel refused for this to happen.

Denzel stopped and turned around, which resulted in Jonas and Tom stopping as their expressions tensed. "Why don't you guys take the lead. It would be better if the boss saw your face before mine, right? They may see a stranger and gun him down, you know?" Denzel kept his voice steady.

Jonas smiled. "Nah, we're good, you can take the lead. Boss is more of an ask questions first, then shoot kind of guy."

Denzel knew that it was now or never to make his move to get away, so he charged forward, his arm turning into a wooden blade. He swung his arm, which would have cut Jonas in half, but both men dodged out of the way. Denzel, seeing a path down, started running to get out of the parking garage until a car appeared from the darkness in front of him.

The car already had its window rolled down, and the driver pulled out a gun, but before he shot, Denzel turned his whole body into wood. The gunshot hit his chest, but instead of hitting skin, it hit wood and bounced off. Denzel couldn't run with his legs being wood, so he shifted them back to skin but kept the upper parts of his body as wood. He ran past the two guys who lured him here and up the parking garage ramp to the fifth floor.

Jonas and Tom ran to the car, figuring it would be faster to just catch up to him in the car than on foot. They got in the back seats of the vehicle. "Let's go!" Jonas said, and they drove forward not at top speed because they wanted the demon at the top anyway.

Denzel made it to the top floor to see firewood around a large wooden cross and a small boy who seemed to be waiting. Denzel watched as the boy's eyes widened in shock and fear. He knew that the boy must be the son of one of the men after him, so he thought that if he took the boy as a hostage, he would be able to get out of here.

Denzel's arm morphed into a wooden sword again. "Come here, boy, or I will hurt you!" Denzel demanded.

Noah shook his head. He was not seeing a man; he was seeing a demon. His father was right; these creatures have to be demons for them to have these abilities. Denzel could hear the car and not being able to wait any longer rushed at the boy.

Noah was scared, so he put his arms in front of him in defense. It was then that his arms and hands glowed a light blue. Denzel, who was running forward, reversed to where he was before he started running toward Noah. Noah watched with shocked, wide-eyed. His nose had some blood dripping down, and he felt drained. Noah did not understand what had happened until he heard the mutant say. "You're a mutant like me...." Noah's eyes widened, and he wiped the liquid dripping down from his nose.

It was at that moment that the car arrived, but Denzel was in shock to register that the car arrived, and then the sound of a gunshot came. In the next moment, Denzel was on the floor with a bullet in his leg and tears in his eyes. Denzel looked up at the boy to see his own set of tears gathering.

Denzel then heard one of the men in a mask yell, "Stop crying, Noah! This is God's work. We will be purifying this man's soul so that he can still be redeemed by God." Denzel would have laughed if he were not in so much pain. These men think they were doing God's work by killing him; they know nothing. Denzel kept his eyes on the boy. It was clear that he was the son of the one who had just talked. Seeing that brought amusement to Denzel's eyes now that that is God's work.

Denzel would not tell anybody that the boy working with them was a mutant, not even when they strapped him to the cross, not even when one of the men asked, "Any last words, demon?" Denzel did not reveal that the angelic-looking boy was a demon; instead, he said, "Mutants are not demons. We are God's work. We are closer to being with God than you! Mutants are the next step to human evolution!"

Andrew scoffed and threw a match into the fire. Denzel turned his whole body into wood, closed his eyes, and began to transform his insides into wood as well. To not feel the pain of being burned alive, he would turn into a tree, and that he did as he grew larger and more into the shape of a tree. Leaves grew, but he would not feel the pain that a human felt when dying; instead, he would feel the pain of a tree when dying. That pain seemed to be more freeing as he could feel his pollen flow through the air.

Andrew looked in disgust, realizing that the demon was not purified. This one was too strong. It would die and then consume some other human. "Don't breathe in the pollen, put your nose in your clothes."

Noah did as his father asked, suppressing his emotions. Noah saw a man die in front of him for the first time, and at the end, his words seemed to resound with him. That man was not a demon, and neither am I, Noah told himself.

When the fire died down, they packed everything back into the car and got in to leave. This time, Andrew drove with Jonas as the passenger. Noah was in the back. Harry and Tom took the rusted red truck.

Andrew stopped by a McDonald's to get him, Jonas, and Noah some food. Usually, he would not bring fast food, but it was already late, and Noah had school tomorrow. Andrew went through the drive-through and ordered.

At the window, he saw a black lady with a similar last name to the demon he had just killed. "Are you by any chance related to Denzel?" Andrew asked. The ladies' eyes brighten at the mention of her older brother. "Sure am! He's my older brother. You know him?" She asked sweetly.

"No. I just met him not long ago at the bar, and he seemed like a nice young man." Andrew replied with a fake smile.

"Yes, my brother is the best, and he's trying to be a lawyer! Anyways, here's your order. Have a nice day." The lady said politely.

"Thank you!" Andrew said as he grabbed the bag, passed it over to Jonas, and drove off.

"That was awkward." Jonas said as he passed the double cheeseburgers around.

"Yeah, well, if she knew her brother was a demon, she would not think of him fondly as she did. We did her a favor." Andrew said.

Andrew then looked at his son through the rearview mirror. "You did well today, Noah. It's 10:30 when we get home, it will be around 11:00. I expect you to shower, brush your teeth, and then go to bed."

"Yes, Father." Noah said as he swallowed the bite he had taken of the burger.

Andrew dropped off Jonas before they reached their large house. A house that could easily house ten people, and yet only three lived there. Andrew pulled into the long driveway and stopped the car. "Don't get out yet," Andrew said. Noah looked at his father, filled with curiosity.

"As you know, the reason why you have not had a sibling is that your mother has some issues with her body. We just recently found out she is pregnant but we dont know if your sibling will survive through the pregnancy." Andrew said.

"I'm going to be a big brother." Noah, with happy eyes, asked.

Andrew smiled and nodded his head. "Your going to be a big brother!"

Noah went to his room after the talk with Andrew. He took a shower and put on his pajamas, then brushed his teeth. It was 11:30, and Noah knew he would not be getting much sleep as he lay on his bed, snuggled into his blanket, revisiting his day.

So Noah got his mutant ability! Denzel sadly died. I was going back and forth about whether I was going to kill Denzel. His character really grew on me, and I wanted him to live, but for Noah's growth and to see what his father was actually doing, Denzel had to die. Sucks when you make a character that is going to die be good.

Anyways, let me know if you see any grammar or spelling errors. I just Grammarly checked this chapter I'm sure there are still errors. I will be Grammarly checking the other chapters as well.
