Cade's POV
My car slid on the ice as I pulled into the Christmas tree farm.
The whole place looked dead. Half the trees were burned from an old fire, and the rest were covered in snow. The little shed where Ember used to work was just a pile of black wood now.
But I could hear my babies crying.
The sound was coming from behind the shed, near the old pond. I ran toward it, my boots slipping on the frozen ground.
"Victoria!" I yelled. "I'm here! Let them go!"
"About time," came her voice from the darkness.
When I got closer to the pond, I saw something that made my blood freeze.
My babies were in a metal cage. The cage was hanging from a tree branch over the pond. The water was completely frozen, but I could see cracks in the ice. If they fell, they would break through and drown in the freezing water.
"Are you insane?" I screamed.
