Ember's POV
The pain hit me hard.
Not in my body, but in my heart. Something was breaking inside me, tearing apart like paper in the wind.
"What's happening?" I gasped, looking at Grandma Ruby.
Her face went white. "He's doing it. Cade is breaking your mate bond."
"No!" I screamed, falling to my knees in the spirit world. "He can't!"
The beautiful garden around us started shaking. Flowers died instantly. Trees turned black. The warm light became cold and scary.
Through the bond that was breaking apart, I could feel everything.
Cade holding our babies. Victoria pointing a gun at them. My children crying in the freezing cold.
"I have to go back," I said, trying to stand up.
But I was getting weaker. Every word Cade spoke in the rejection ritual was like poison in my blood.
"I, Cade Blackwood, reject my mate bond with Ember Frost."
I screamed so loud that the spirit world cracked like glass around me.
