Ember's POV
I made the hardest choice of my life.
"Save the babies," I told Ash. "I'll handle the pack house."
"Ember, no. You're still too weak."
"The pack has warriors. My children only have us."
Before anyone could stop me, I ran toward the frozen pond behind the tree farm barn.
My legs felt like rubber, but I kept moving. The golden healing power inside me was the only thing keeping me upright.
Through the darkness, I saw something that made my heart stop.
Cade was in the middle of the icy water, holding both babies above his head. His lips were blue from the cold, and his arms were shaking.
"Help!" he called out weakly. "I can't... hold them... much longer."
The ice around him was cracking. If it broke completely, all three of them would sink into the deep, freezing water.
"Hang on!" I yelled, rushing to the edge of the pond.
Victoria was standing on the opposite shore, pointing a silver gun at Cade.
"One more step, and I shoot him in the head," she warned me.
