Chapter 20 - Echoes of the past

Harold heard the sound of the doorbell and went to open the door. Cholan told Harold that our secret base had been attacked. "Sir, our officers are here — many people were injured; some have been admitted to the hospital." As soon as Cholan said this, Harold told him to take his car and go inside; he also told Ranga, "You take a short rest — I'll come back immediately." He asked Ranga to look after the many security personnel and then left for the secret base. When he checked the place and then rushed to the hospital to see the officers and their families, he found that one of the officers' sons had run away in shock. Harold was very distressed and tried to help them with whatever they needed.

Cholan and Harold left the hospital together. They went to the officer's house and, while checking inside, the security team opened fire — when they entered they saw many stab wounds in several places. The victim was bleeding heavily. As soon as Harold arrived, he grabbed the wounded person's hand and shouted, "You — you —" then collapsed, fainting. Ranga and the others were also confused; nothing made sense to them at first. After a while, Harold understood what had happened: the attack had been staged to mislead them. He diverted attention and Ranga took the injured person away. Harold felt that this news shouldn't go public officially, so he and Ranga decided not to reveal details. They took the body out quietly and staged the scene so nobody knew where it had gone. Harold wondered what motive Ranga had for telling him nothing; Harold kept thinking that maybe Ranga wouldn't let him eat or sleep.

Then Harold received a phone call. Immediately he took his car and drove off alone. The car was an old, battered one; he drove far out to the seashore. There was a boat there — Harold took it and headed for an island. When he reached the island he found Karikalan already there. The two of them entered the island together. There was an old house inside — in that house a gang had attacked someone, tied them up, and left them to die with their hands bound behind their head. While Harold and Karikalan were observing, they realized the house on that island was actually a secret base. Ranga had told Karikalan to identify the gang that killed people; Karikalan said he didn't know who the attackers were. So Karikalan investigated and discovered that the gang who'd tied up the victim was indeed responsible; they had beaten him and left him in that condition.

Karikalan explained he wasn't sure who had ordered the killing — he didn't know if this gang was the one that carried out the murder or if it was a different gang. Ranga said it might be a local gang that had also come to that spot. Karikalan checked where the gang had come from but couldn't identify their origin. He then took Harold's phone and asked for the gang's phone number; he said he could trace it. Karikalan called the number and told Harold that more payment was still due. He also said that if the person in that gang spoke to anyone, they would kill them. Karikalan traced the phone and found the location in a forested area. Immediately Harold shared that location. Cholan told him the gang wanted the victim dead and were ready to kill him on sight. Cholan and extra forces began to sweep the forest; both sides started firing. While fighting, they found one person still alive — the rest were either dead or had escaped. Only that one person was still conscious.

Harold told Karikalan, "Go inside and hide." Cholan warned that if they saw him, it would be a problem. Then Cholan asked Harold who that person was and why he was there. That living person had been beaten badly — when they tried to look at his face his mouth was foaming. Harold heated an iron rod until it was red hot, seized it, and forced it into the man's hand. The man screamed and struggled; Harold grabbed him tightly. Then he realized something: this was connected to the Black Fox gang. Stephen had been involved earlier, and Robert Lorentz was linked to Stephen — somehow Robert related to Stephen. Harold asked Lorentz about something he had heard; Lorentz wanted to know what had happened.

Stephen had said what had happened: when Lorentz was in college, a girl named Meera studied there. Lorentz and Meera had grown very fond of each other; though Lorentz was a big gangster, he was still young and didn't get much motherly affection, so he had never been able to hold onto love. That girl gave him love and he felt alive. But later, after college, Meera left for another country to continue her studies. Before she left, she told Lorentz that she would wait for him until she returned from her studies. Lorentz was very happy and waited faithfully for her.

Three years later, after finishing her higher studies, Meera was returning home. On the way back to their town, she got into an accident and was treated. After treatment she recovered, but three more years passed. Lorentz kept waiting for Meera at the airport and was always anxious for her return. One day Meera arrived, and as she was driving home in her car, something happened: her car suddenly braked and stopped. Someone ran up to the car and stabbed the driver in the head with a sword. When Lorentz saw the bloodied face, a gang stood behind him with guns. Lorentz then fled. Meera was left behind; she was terrified and couldn't say anything to Lorentz. She left the place without speaking. Lorentz, unable to talk to anyone about his fear, wondered what to say to Meera. He thought she had left and that she would not return. That fear ate at him and he contemplated revenge and death, thinking life had no meaning.

Meera then returned to study more; three years later, while coming back to town after completing studies, she got into an accident. She received treatment and recovered, but by then another three years had gone by. Lorentz continued to wait patiently for Meera to finish and return. When Meera finally came back and met Lorentz, he was overjoyed. But something happened suddenly: a sword stabbed a man's head near Meera's car — a blade that cut cruelly. Lorentz witnessed that and then fled in anger. Meera knew Lorentz only as a powerful gangster's son; she never imagined she'd face such danger in those six years. After that incident, Meera and Lorentz met again and she was happy to see him. But Lorentz, seeing her, immediately started crying and couldn't understand what to say. He was so frightened that he left the place without saying anything. He became consumed by fear, thinking the world was out to kill him. He decided he couldn't keep living the way things were.

Meera asked him, "Why are you so afraid? Why are you like this?" She reminded him of his youth: "You were young then — how did you become like this? I've been waiting for you. I left everything behind in my small village because I believed in you. I gave up the life I knew for you, and I waited." Hearing Meera say she had waited for him, Lorentz felt a burning resolve and tried to change the course of his life. He sought Meera and went to find her. When he asked her why she was afraid, she replied that she was frightened not because of him but because of everything that had happened around them. She told him that she had given up everything for him and that's why she had waited.
