Chapter 23 - The sentinel's call

They went into Lorentz's house and carried back a trunk box. Inside the trunk was a crumpled piece of paper — the address was written on that paper. I wondered why — this relentless rain, nobody had come to that place until now. Lorentz and Harold were determined to go there; both families and Meera told them not to, but Harold insisted we must know the truth about this matter. He said it's very important for us. Lorentz said nothing would happen to us, and they would go immediately.

They set out into the pouring rain. The wind was biting and the rain pelted down; the darkness was intense. Because the vehicle couldn't get too close, the two of them got down and started walking. The rain kept shaving across them like knives. Near the place there was a ravine at the high point of the rainfall — they began walking down into it. All kinds of poisonous snakes, scorpions, and centipedes circled them, many of them right there, but they pushed through. Beyond that, they reached the top of the rain-fed stream. A little way ahead there was a wide bank filled with coconut trees; the ravine channeled into a waterfall there. Neither of them had any clue what was about to happen — the place had become strangely still, like a frozen pool that had formed into a cascade. The water was not letting the rain reach down; their feet were exhausted from walking, so they decided to rest a little. Harold went forward to check and trembled; he suddenly screamed from inside the tree trunk and twisted. Immediately Lorentz ran in to save Harold and grabbed him. Both of them were plunged into the water — a single beam of light seemed to pass through them.

As they watched, a sage (munivar) knelt at the water's edge and had lit a small fire. The two were scared and crawled to the shore. A sound echoed — it struck the hill above. Lorentz turned and peered; the sage was not there anymore. The two of them heard the sound again and a crevice opened up. The crevice widened and the sound intensified. No one was there — only the echo remained. A flat, wide surface of the earth rose up; another sound — the sage was sitting right in front of them. He said to them, "I know why you have come. Cyrus is your father. Your father once abandoned his work early in life and his heart hardened; because of a certain event he came to this mountain, thinking he would find something here that would purify him. He believed a power lives here that can cleanse greed and hatred — that's why he began to understand his own destiny. I am the one who watched the sentinels over him and kept his matters. At that same time the sentinels said they would protect him — they declared that they would carry out a ritual for him. Your father was given permission by the sentinels, but they said his body must show the mark of the tiger on its breast; only then would the sentinels consent. Listen properly: the sentinels accepted no one lightly. They have assisted Ponniyin Selvan (the Great One of the Kaveri) in the past and they have benefited him. They are not simple weapons to be wielded; they keep the place and guard the tools within. Ponniyin Selvan gave these rites since childhood — that life's name is Irulmuni. I am that Irulmuni; I teach Ponniyin Selvan. I am of the Chola line."

He continued: "When eras change, I will give signs to the Cholas to awaken them. No one else can see me except the Chola people. But if you learn how time shifts like shadows, you can go anywhere. You can learn the cycles of time and the many devices and techniques I possess. That life — those secrets — are tied to this existence. Because of that the life is watched over by the sentinels. No matter what tsunami or storm arrives, they cannot be harmed. But what they have now is something that will let you meet me one day. You will come to know me. You need to learn certain things — and you already know some of them. So they hid themselves; the two of you left from there and immediately went home. They thought and decided: if we want our peace, we must stop that danger. For that, first we must find out what that "prechan" is."

"We must enter the island to discover it," the sage said. "Until Victor is here, our lives will be tangled and we must live carefully." Harold said, "We want all of us to live in peace." Meera asked whether she could make the promise she had made; Lorentz didn't answer. Christy said killing him has no meaning; they insisted he could not be killed easily. When they said they could not get near him, Meera asked who had said it. Lorentz said one man — then Meera was shocked. Meera saw Lorentz and said, "I'm the one who will begin the blade." Now I will say: Victor will not leave his head unshielded in this house — Meera said this. Lorentz didn't reply. Meera said, if you want our peace, our children must be safe — and he will die for us. Ranga and Harold's family members have watched him and risked their lives for him. You can't just leave him alone, she said. Immediately Harold and Lorentz left. There, they met the Chola — and Harold told the Chola only about his father's secret without revealing anything else. Then Chola told Harold, Lorentz, and the other three to go to the place where Robert was. Lorentz went forward and stopped; Robert trembled in deep fear — his trembling was intense. He asked whether he was still alive; he was told that as soon as it was said the man's head fell to the ground. Lorentz's life's course had been broken for many years, until that moment. The Chola stood by while a head fell within one gust — they looked on as three of them were taken to one place. A helicopter landed there. Lorentz, with Harold and Chola, boarded it. He flew into a gust of wind and then — neither Lorentz nor Harold nor Chola understood what happened. From far off, a storm seemed to have stalled many cars and trucks; something like that had come, and a massive army with advanced guns had been assembled. Lorentz believed his old gang had reassembled. But he called and told them, and many of them arrived before him...
