Sophia's heart was racing as she stood outside the Queen's study, her hand trembling as she grasped the doorknob. She had to talk to the Queen, had to make her understand that Lord Thomas was playing a dangerous game. But as she pushed open the door, she was met with an unexpected sight.
The Queen was standing by the window, her back to Sophia, her shoulders hunched in a way that made her seem smaller than usual. For a moment, Sophia forgot about Lord Thomas and the blackmail, and felt a pang of sympathy for the woman who had always seemed so strong and unyielding.
"Your Majesty," Sophia said, her voice soft.
The Queen turned, her eyes red-rimmed and puffy. Sophia's eyes widened in surprise. She had never seen the Queen look so... human.
"Sophia, I need your help," the Queen said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Sophia's instincts told her to be cautious, but something about the Queen's words made her take a step forward. "What is it, Your Majesty?"
The Queen took a deep breath, and for a moment, Sophia saw a glimpse of the woman behind the mask. A woman who was scared, and vulnerable, and desperate.
"It's about Prince Albert's journal," the Queen said, her voice cracking. "I think Lord Thomas is trying to use it against me."
Sophia's eyes narrowed. "What do you mean?"
The Queen hesitated, and for a moment, Sophia thought she was going to refuse to answer. But then, she seemed to deflate, and a look of resignation crossed her face.
"Prince Albert was not who you think he was, Sophia," the Queen said, her voice barely above a whisper. "He was... complicated. And I think Lord Thomas is trying to use that against me."
Sophia's mind was reeling. What was the Queen saying? That Prince Albert had secrets? That he was not the man she thought he was?
As she stood there, frozen in shock, the Queen's words kept echoing in her mind. "He was... complicated." What did she mean? And what did Lord Thomas have to do with it?
Sophia knew she had to get to the bottom of this, had to uncover the truth about Prince Albert and Lord Thomas's plan. But as she turned to leave, she felt a sense of unease creeping over her. She was playing with fire, and she knew it.
The Queen's eyes met hers, and for a moment, Sophia saw a glimpse of fear there. Fear of what? The truth? The consequences? Or something else entirely?
Sophia's instincts told her to be careful, to tread carefully. But she knew she couldn't back down now. She had to see this through, no matter what.
As she left the Queen's study, Sophia felt a sense of determination wash over her. She was going to uncover the truth, no matter what it took.
But little did she know, the truth was far more shocking than she could have ever imagined.
The hallway seemed to stretch out before her, a long and winding tunnel with no end in sight. Sophia felt a shiver run down her spine as she made her way back to her room, her mind racing with questions and doubts.
What was Prince Albert hiding? And what did Lord Thomas have to do with it?
As she reached her room, Sophia felt a sense of relief wash over her. She was safe, for now. But she knew she couldn't stay hidden forever.
She had to keep digging, had to uncover the truth. And she had to do it before it was too late.
The clock was ticking, and Sophia knew she was running out of time.
