Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: All for Nothing

On the second floor of the warehouse, Akemi stared blankly at the explosions below. In a matter of moments, Azu's relentless bombardment had decimated the hundred-strong crowd, leaving them in disarray, wailing in agony. The scene was a massive shock to her system. She was utterly stunned. In all her life, she had never witnessed such a sight. For a moment, she couldn't find the words to describe the shock she felt.

After the initial barrage of fire, Shiraishi E confirmed that no one was left standing. He then switched to a submachine gun and walked out, scanning left and right, finishing off anyone who wasn't quite dead. He had to be cautious; this was his first time doing something like this. If he messed up, what would become of his reputation?

Looking at the bodies strewn across the ground, Shiraishi E's brow twitched, but he said nothing. In truth, he was also nervous, anxious, and unsettled. After all, it was his first time acting as a vigilante. How could he be completely at ease?

At that moment, Akemi came downstairs. As she stepped out of the warehouse, she was about to say something, but the sight of the carnage made her retch. "S-Sorry, I didn't mean to... retch." Akemi tried to continue apologizing but couldn't control another wave of nausea.

Shiraishi E comforted her, "Take your time. You'll get used to it. We have plenty of time."

"Th-Thank you." Akemi forced a smile, then felt her stomach churn again and quickly turned to a corner to be sick.

Watching Akemi vomit so violently, Shiraishi E couldn't help but wonder. Am I reacting too calmly? Logically, anyone doing this for the first time should be very uncomfortable. Some might even react like Akemi and throw up. How can I be so composed?

Thinking this, he subconsciously felt it was because of the Azu mask. Yes, it must be because of the mask! It's what's making me so nonchalant and accepting of killing. Otherwise, why would my reaction be so placid?

The things from this Bandit System are really influencing me in subtle ways! Shiraishi E thought to himself, but he didn't resent it. This was his choice. Besides, it wasn't a bad thing. It saved him from vomiting all over the place, which would not only be unseemly but also hinder his grand plans. The fewer of these societal dregs in the world, the better.

As his mind wandered, Akemi gradually recovered. She wiped her mouth with a handkerchief, walked over to Shiraishi E, and bowed apologetically. "I'm sorry, I made a fool of myself."

"Don't worry, you'll get used to it," Shiraishi E waved his hand dismissively. He turned to look at the transaction boxes and said with a hint of excitement, "Come on, let's see how much we made this time!" He then strode over.

Akemi watched "Azu" act so calmly, unfazed by the bloody scene. She was once again certain that he was a professional. Who else could handle such a grand spectacle? She pushed aside her stray thoughts and followed him.

Shiraishi E opened the wooden crates and found them filled with various weapons. Upon closer inspection, he discovered that the firearms were of poor quality; several gun barrels were already bent.

"I thought they were trading something valuable, but it's just this pile of scrap metal," Shiraishi E said, exasperated.

Akemi, standing beside him, didn't know what to say. So many firearms, and he called them "scrap metal"? But then she thought about the grenade launcher he had just used. In his eyes, these pistols and rifles probably were just scrap metal.

She took the initiative to say, "If we sell this batch of weapons, we could still make a good profit!"

"No, that would make it easy for us to get caught," Shiraishi E refused without a second thought. Besides, he had no intention of dealing in arms. If he did, with the prices offered by the Bandit System, he could quickly become an arms dealer and a wealthy man. But if he did that, he would never have a moment's peace.

"We'll call the police later and let them handle this stuff," he said.

"Okay," Akemi nodded, secretly relieved. She was also more inclined to hand it over to the police. After all, before all this, she was just an ordinary citizen with a very simple moral code.

Shiraishi E turned and walked to the other side. Seeing the scattered briefcases on the ground, a wide smile spread across his face. "Let me see how much money is in here!!" He picked up a briefcase and snapped it open.

However, when he saw what was inside, the smile on his face froze.

"Why is it flour?" he said, annoyed.

"Huh? Flour?" Akemi was stunned. She quickly went to open the other suitcases and found them all filled with bags of white powder.

She then realized something, and her expression turned grim. "It seems... they were trading weapons for flour! Among these gangs, flour is also a hot commodity. Instead of taking cash, they can sell the flour themselves and make an even bigger profit!"

At this point, Akemi said guiltily, "I'm so sorry, Mr. Azu. I didn't do my intelligence work properly. This was all for nothing."

Shiraishi E glanced at the bodies on the ground. "Not entirely. At least we took out some criminals. I feel much better now."

"..." Akemi didn't know what to say, but she realized that this "Mr. Azu" was different from other criminals. He was particularly keen on fighting crime.

Making a mental note of this, Akemi bowed in apology again. "I'm terribly sorry. This is my first time doing this kind of thing, please forgive my mistake. Next time, I will definitely gather all the information before contacting you!"

"I'm sure you'll do better," Shiraishi E said without any further ado and turned to leave. After leaving the Beika Pier, he called the police to notify them to come and handle the scene.
