Time flew by, and the day of the competition was getting closer. However, during class one day, Sonoko noticed that Ran's expression seemed a little off. So, during the break, she went over to Ran's desk. "Ran, what's wrong? You don't seem to be in a good mood today."
"Sigh... you probably won't believe it if I tell you," Ran said with a strange expression. "My dad and Shiraishi-kun... have become sworn brothers."
"Huh?" Sonoko was stunned for a moment, then burst out laughing. "Uncle Mouri must have been drunk, right?"
"Well... sigh, it's a bit complicated to explain. I'll just show you the video," Ran said with mixed feelings, taking out her phone and playing a video.
Sonoko leaned in curiously and watched intently. The video started off shaky, then the camera stealthily moved from the kitchen to the doorway, capturing Kogoro Mouri and Shiraishi E in the living room. Seeing the angle, Sonoko knew it must have been secretly filmed by Ran.
In the video, Kogoro Mouri was clearly drunk, shouting, "Shiraishi-kun, I feel like we're kindred spirits, destined to meet, we hit it off so well! From now on, you're my little brother!! If you ever run into any trouble, you can always come to me! I'll definitely help you solve it!"
Shiraishi E, on the other side, chuckled. "Mr. Mouri, you want me to be your little brother? You'll have to out-drink me first!! If you can out-drink me, I'll be your little brother from now on. But if you can't, you'll be my little brother. How about it?"
Kogoro Mouri flew into a rage. "You really think I can't out-drink you? Come on, come on, tonight I'll make you admit defeat!! Whoever passes out first will be the little brother!!"
Seeing the two of them make such a bet, the filming Ran said, "Dad, Shiraishi-kun! You two should drink less, making a bet like this!!"
Shiraishi E turned to Ran and shrugged. "It's not my fault. Your dad's the one who insisted on the bet."
Kogoro Mouri turned to the filming Ran and yelled, "Shut up! Don't interrupt when adults are talking!!"
"Dad, you... fine, I'm not going to bother with you! Just drink then!" Ran said, a little annoyed.
The video ended there.
"Huh? That's it?" Sonoko was just getting into it when it ended. She quickly asked, "What happened next?"
"The rest is here," Ran said, playing another video.
In this video, Kogoro Mouri was already lying on the tatami mat, fast asleep. Shiraishi E was patting his cheek. "Hey, wake up, let's keep drinking!! Why'd you stop? Didn't you say you wanted me to be your little brother? If you don't get up, you'll have to be the little brother!!"
"Not saying anything? Great, from now on, I'll call you Little Brother Mouri!" After saying that, he turned to Ran and smiled. "Ran, don't worry about it. Your dad calls me big brother, but I'll still call you Ran. We'll each stick to our own terms!"
"This..." The Ran in the video was at a loss for words.
Shiraishi E then started to help Kogoro Mouri up and take him to his bedroom. Ran, seeing this, quickly stopped filming and went to help.
The video ended.
Ran felt a little embarrassed and sighed, "Sonoko, do you understand how I feel now?"
"Yeah, I kind of get it!" Sonoko said with a smile in her eyes. "Shiraishi-kun is really down-to-earth! To be able to get along so well with Uncle Mouri!!"
"That's not what I'm talking about!" Ran said, quite frustrated. "My dad has to call Shiraishi-kun 'big brother'! Don't you think that's weird? The family hierarchy is all messed up!"
"Oh, don't worry about things like that," Sonoko said, patiently trying to console her. "It's just a silly game of pride between men!"
"Sigh, I can understand Shiraishi-kun, but Dad is so old, why is he still so immature?" Ran couldn't understand.
"Men are boys until they die!" Sonoko said, used to it. "My dad is so old, and he's still playing some kind of post-apocalyptic survival game. He even built a basement for it, filled with all sorts of survival supplies for the apocalypse! I'm already used to it!"
"Is that so?" Seeing that Sonoko's dad was the same, Ran felt a sense of relief. However, she still whispered, "Sonoko, you have to promise me you won't tell anyone else about this!"
"Alright, alright!" Sonoko made an "OK" gesture. Just then, the class bell rang, and she hurried back to her seat.
School ended at three in the afternoon. On the way to the karate club with Ran, Shiraishi E said, "The competition starts in two days. Starting today, we won't do any high-intensity training. You just need to do a simple warm-up! The most important thing is to maintain a good mindset!"
"Mm-hmm, okay!" Ran's heart tightened, and she immediately lost the mood to worry about the generational relationship between her dad and Shiraishi E. The competition was more important!
Without having to personally train, Shiraishi E had a much easier time. He just had to watch Ran from the side. After a warm-up, familiarizing herself with the basic moves, and practicing a few combinations, an hour quickly passed.
Shiraishi E checked the time. "That's about enough. We can end the training now!"
"Huh? It's only been an hour, it's over already?" Ran was surprised. She felt she should train a little more.
"The competition is the day after tomorrow. Last-minute cramming is useless now," Shiraishi E said. He then added, "Besides, I'm taking you somewhere."
"Where?" Ran was immediately curious.
Shiraishi E smiled. "It's a secret! You go home and wait. I'll go home, change, and then come pick you up!"
Seeing him being so mysterious, Ran's curiosity was piqued.
After Ran returned home alone, Kogoro Mouri saw that only she was there and frowned. "Hmm? Why are you alone? Where's that kid Shiraishi? Why didn't he come over? I was planning to get my revenge from last night!"
Ran ignored the latter part of her dad's sentence and said, "Shiraishi-kun said he's taking me somewhere later... As for where, he didn't say."
"A place? Ah... I know where it is." Kogoro Mouri realized something, and his frown relaxed. "Then go to your room and change! That place... doesn't go well with a school uniform!"
"Dad, you know?" Ran was immediately curious and repeatedly asked, "Where is it? Just tell me!!"
"You'll know when you get there. If you know now, the anticipation will be gone," Kogoro Mouri shook his head, choosing not to say.
This raised Ran's anticipation even more. "Then I'll go upstairs to change. Dad, you're on your own for dinner tonight!"
"Alright, alright, I'll go get some ramen myself," Kogoro Mouri said, indicating it was no problem.
