"Inspector Megure!! We've secured the scene."
"At the scene, we found... a large number of firearms and flour."
"And... there are two survivors. They might know what happened."
At the Beika Pier, the crime scene had been cordoned off by the police. Miwako Sato's face was grim as she reported the situation. Nearly a hundred people had been blown up here! How could she not look grim? The moment she arrived, she couldn't help but run to a corner and throw up. It wasn't just her; even other experienced detectives were sickened by the bloody scene. For a while, the sound of retching filled the crime scene. Little did they know that in their moment of nausea, they had overlooked a crucial clue.
Juzo Megure's expression was also terrifyingly serious. To be honest, in all his years as a detective, this was the first time he had ever seen such a scene. The level of brutality in this gang war was unprecedented. Over a hundred people dead! They couldn't cover this up even if they wanted to.
"Bring those survivors over. Let's see what happened here!" Megure knew they couldn't ignore this. It was too vicious.
"Understood!" Sato nodded and went to have the two survivors brought over.
Megure looked at the two men. The long-haired man looked dazed and bewildered, while the buzz-cut man was terrified, his pants soaked, and a faint smell of urine in the air. Megure's brow furrowed.
He said in a deep voice, "What happened here?"
The long-haired man shook his head, looking nervous. "I don't know! I have no idea what happened. We were in the middle of a deal, and then suddenly there was an explosion! Before I knew what was happening, I was thrown into the air and hit the ground, passing out. When I woke up, they... they were all dead! I really don't know anything!"
Megure looked at the man's head and saw some dried blood. It seemed this guy was a lucky one. During the explosion, he was thrown by the blast wave, hit the ground, and passed out, which saved his life. Judging by the fact that the other bodies at the scene had been shot in the head, the ruthless bandit had a habit of finishing off his victims. This guy had been lucky to be in the bandit's blind spot and had escaped death.
He turned to the other man with the buzz cut. "You must know something, right?"
The buzz-cut man subconsciously swallowed. He looked around nervously. "Um... officer, can... can I have a cigarette?"
Sato frowned and was about to say something, but Megure stopped her. He took out a cigarette himself and lit it for the man.
"Th-Thank you." The man took the cigarette and quickly started smoking. After taking a few hard drags, his expression calmed a little, but he was still uneasy.
He was silent for a moment, then said, "When the attack happened, I immediately lay down and played dead. I secretly opened my eyes halfway through and saw the guy who attacked us! But he was wearing a red mask that covered the top half of his face, so I couldn't see what he looked like! This guy is very cautious. After clearing the field, he even went around finishing people off... I saw things were going bad and secretly crawled away to hide!!"
Hearing this, Sato's heart skipped a beat. She immediately took out her phone, found the sketch Takagi had drawn of the killer, and showed it to the man. "Was it like this?"
The buzz-cut man saw the picture and nodded repeatedly. "Yes, exactly like that!! And he had an accomplice, a woman!! I heard them talking; the woman was the one who got the intel! And, the woman called the masked man 'Mr. Azu'!!!"
Sato and Megure exchanged a look, a hint of joy in their eyes. Finally, some useful information!
Megure asked impatiently, "What about the woman? Do you remember what she looked like?"
The buzz-cut man said with a bitter smile, "I was too scared to die, so I didn't dare open my eyes."
Megure was a little disappointed. But considering the man had played dead out of fear, it made sense. He said, "Repeat their conversation for me."
The man recalled for a moment and then recounted their general conversation. Upon hearing that "Azu" hadn't taken the firearms and flour but left them for the police, Megure felt like there was something wrong with his ears. He subconsciously glanced at Sato and met her eyes. They were both silent for a moment.
Finally, Megure said, "Alright, you can go and rest for a bit. You'll need to come back to the station with us later to give a statement."
After the other officers led the man away, he turned to Sato. "Miwako, what do you make of this?"
"A double-cross!" Sato easily characterized the case. "That killer named Azu is targeting criminals! He didn't take the firearms and flour, maybe because he didn't care for them, or maybe he was worried about being tracked. In any case, this killer named Azu... is a very dangerous person! From the last incident and this one, he's extremely arrogant and has no regard for the police."
Megure nodded. "My thoughts exactly. He's a dangerous man! He possesses highly destructive weapons and has a simple, brutal style. He's not like a killer; he's more like a vicious, ruthless bandit!! As for how to handle this, let the higher-ups worry about it! I'll report to Superintendent Matsumoto now."
With that, he took out his phone and called Kiyonaga Matsumoto.
The next morning, Shiraishi E went to school in a good mood. After helping society eliminate a group of destabilizing elements, he felt his soul had been elevated. However, after searching through various news websites, he only found the information in an obscure section.
[Last night around 10 PM, a gang war broke out at the Beika Pier.]
That one sentence was it. No detailed content, no pictures.
Shiraishi E understood the police's attitude at a glance. The Metropolitan Police Department had no intention of spending too much energy on gang wars. They were already short-staffed, with officers working almost year-round. They were swamped with various cases, so how could they find the time to deal with the gangs' nonsense?
The matter hadn't escalated, and the public was unaware. The firearms and flour were in police hands, and the gangs' financial backers had ways to "destroy" them. Therefore, the police didn't care about the lives of gang members. The gangs' backers didn't care either... if they died, they could just recruit more. These people were just lost souls; their deaths meant nothing.
The matter ended there.
With this, Shiraishi E became even more certain of his belief—being a gangster is a dead-end job!
