Chapter 25: Welcome to Earth-38, Mr. Luthor
The arrival of Lena Luthor in National City was, for Adam, a mixed bag of emotions. On one hand, his meta-knowledge screamed "future villain! Tread carefully!" On the other, he knew her story was complex, her path not yet set in stone. She was here to rebrand her family's notorious company, now "L-Corp," a move Adam found both cynical and intriguing. "So, 'L-Corp.' Very original. Next they'll be calling it 'Evil Corp' or 'Definitely Not Evil Corp.' Subtlety, thy name is Luthor."
Kara, predictably, was wary. Her experiences with Lex had left a deep scar, and the name "Luthor" itself was enough to trigger her caution. Adam found her staring at a news report about Lena's press conference, her brow furrowed in suspicion.
"Luthors are like a box of chocolates, Kara," Adam said, leaning against her desk. "You never know what you're gonna get. But sometimes, there's a really good one hidden in there. Or, you know, one that's filled with poison. It's a gamble. But maybe… maybe this one's different."
Kara looked at him, her skepticism evident. "Different? Adam, she's a Luthor. Every Luthor I've ever known has tried to destroy me. Or the world."
"And you've proven them wrong every time," Adam countered, his voice gentle but firm. "Look, I'm not saying throw caution to the wind. Be smart. Be vigilant. But also… be open. Everyone deserves a chance to write their own story. Even a Luthor. Maybe she's genuinely trying to do good. Or maybe she's just really good at playing the long game. Either way, it's worth observing. From a safe distance, of course. With a very powerful telescope. And maybe a really big net, just in case."
Kara considered his words, a flicker of reluctant curiosity in her eyes. Adam's perspective, as always, was unique, a blend of cynicism and surprising optimism. He was her trusted partner, and she valued his insights, even when they challenged her preconceived notions.
A new alien threat emerged, targeting other aliens, causing panic in National City's burgeoning alien community. The D.E.O. was scrambling to track it, its movements erratic and unpredictable.
Adam subtly helped the D.E.O. track the new alien threat. He "predicted" its next target based on its pattern of attacking isolated, vulnerable aliens, suggesting it was hunting for specific genetic material or power sources. He'd casually mention, "You know, if I were a predatory alien, I'd probably go after the weakest links first. The ones who are new to town, or who are trying to stay off the radar. It's like, a really bad version of Predator, but with more intergalactic bureaucracy."
Winn, listening intently, would quickly cross-reference Adam's "hunches" with D.E.O. data, often finding a correlation that led to a breakthrough.
Throughout it all, Adam subtly observed Lena, looking for clues to her true intentions. He saw the genuine desire to do good, but also the deep-seated need for her family's approval, the lingering shadow of Lex. He knew her path was fraught with peril, but he also saw the potential for her to be a powerful ally.
Kara and Adam discussed Lena extensively, their conversations a testament to their solidifying partnership and trust. Adam's protective instincts towards Kara were evident, a quiet undercurrent in his advice. He wanted her to be safe, but he also wanted her to be true to her compassionate nature.
"She's a good person," Adam thought, watching Lena give a surprisingly heartfelt speech about L-Corp's new mission. "She just needs a little push in the right direction. And maybe a few less psychotic family members trying to destroy the world."
