Chapter 30: Invasion! and a Leap of Faith
The breach to Earth-1 was a dizzying blur of colors and sensations, a momentary disorientation before Adam found himself standing on solid ground. Central City. The air felt different here, crackling with a nervous energy, a palpable sense of impending doom. The Dominators. They were here. And so were the heroes.
Adam stood beside Kara, Barry, and Cisco, taking in the assembled legends: Oliver Queen, the Green Arrow, brooding and intense; John Diggle, solid and dependable; Felicity Smoak, a whirlwind of nervous energy and technological brilliance; Sara Lance, the White Canary, a dangerous grace; Ray Palmer, the Atom, optimistic and brilliant; and the Legends, a motley crew of time-traveling misfits. "Holy cow," Adam thought, suppressing a fanboy squeal. "It's the whole gang. This is going to be awesome. Or, you know, a complete disaster. Probably both."
Oliver, ever the suspicious one, eyed Adam. "And who is this?"
"He's Adam," Kara said, a proud smile on her face. "He's… helpful. And he knows things."
"That's me," Adam said, extending a hand to Oliver. "Adam Stiels. Professional sarcastic observer. And occasional alien-puncher. Nice to meet you, Green Arrow. Love the hood. Very dramatic." He winked.
Oliver's eyebrow twitched. "Green Arrow?"
Barry quickly interjected, "He's from Kara's Earth! He's… unique."
Adam, now on Earth-1, was a valuable asset due to his meta-knowledge of the Dominators' weaknesses and the heroes' abilities and dynamics. He subtly guided strategy during the chaotic planning sessions.
"So, these Dominators," Adam mused, pointing at a holographic image of one of the aliens. "They're telepathic, right? And they're vulnerable to pain. And they're probably using a central hive mind to coordinate. So, if you hit the Queen, or the central command, the drones go down. Classic sci-fi trope. And if you're looking for a way to incapacitate them without killing them, maybe a specific sonic frequency that disrupts their telepathy? Or a really strong dose of… well, a really strong dose of something that makes them really uncomfortable. Like, say, a bad case of the flu. Or a really annoying pop song on repeat."
Felicity looked at him, her eyes wide. "A sonic frequency? A bad pop song? How do you know this?"
"I've seen it in a documentary," Adam said with a shrug. "Very detailed. Trust me. When it comes to alien invasions, I'm practically a walking strategy guide. Just focus on the weak points. Every alien has one. Even the ones who look like giant space lizards."
During a Dominator attack, the heroes found themselves overwhelmed. Cisco, trying to open a breach, was suddenly targeted by a Dominator energy blast.
"Duck! Or, you know, just stand behind the guy who's surprisingly good at taking a hit!" Adam yelled, lunging forward.
[ADAPT SYSTEM: Host in danger. Threat: Dominator energy blast/physical attack. Adaptation: Doubled energy absorption/physical resistance.]
Adam intercepted the blast, his body momentarily hardening, absorbing the energy with a faint glow. He then deflected a follow-up physical attack from the Dominator, sending the alien sprawling. "Seriously, dude? You're going to need a better aim than that! And maybe a better dental plan, because I'm pretty sure that just cracked a tooth!"
Cisco stared at him, wide-eyed. "You… you just took a Dominator blast!"
"Just a good day for my immune system!" Adam yelled back, already moving to intercept another Dominator. He was buying Cisco time, protecting the key to stopping the invasion.
The battle raged, a desperate dance of power and strategy. Kara fought alongside Barry, a blur of red, blue, and yellow against the alien invaders. Adam, meanwhile, focused on protecting the more vulnerable heroes, on ensuring the plan could be executed. He was a human anomaly in a battle of metahumans and aliens, but his Adapt System made him surprisingly effective.
Later, after the Dominators were repelled and the heroes stood victorious, albeit exhausted, Adam found a moment to make a pop-culture reference that only Barry and Cisco understood, leaving the other heroes confused. He might even "accidentally" call Oliver "Green Arrow" before he'd officially revealed his identity to everyone, earning a sharp glare from Oliver and a chuckle from Barry.
Adam had formed initial bonds with Oliver, Diggle, Felicity, Sara, and Ray, earning their wary respect. Kara, watching him in action on another Earth, saw his bravery, his quick thinking, his unwavering commitment to protecting others, even strangers. Her pride and affection deepened, a quiet understanding passing between them.
"He's not just my anchor," Kara thought, watching Adam playfully tease Cisco. "He's a hero in his own right. And he's willing to follow me anywhere. Even to another Earth."
