Chapter 28: The Darkest Place and a Desperate Plea

The D.E.O. was plunged into chaos. Cyborg Superman. The ultimate perversion of hope, a twisted mockery of the Man of Steel, now working for Cadmus. Adam felt a cold dread settle in his stomach. This was a major threat, a deeply personal one for Kara, and a dangerous one for everyone. "Seriously, Cadmus? You just had to go there. Did you not learn anything from the comics? Cyborg Superman never ends well."

Meanwhile, J'onn J'onzz was facing his darkest truth. M'gann M'orzz, the White Martian, had finally confessed her secret, revealing the agonizing truth of her past, her involvement in the genocide of his people. J'onn was shattered, his hope replaced by a profound sense of betrayal.

Adam found J'onn sitting alone in a darkened D.E.O. office, his human form slumped, his eyes distant.

"Rough day at the office, Green Guy?" Adam asked softly, his voice devoid of its usual sarcasm. "Looks like someone just got hit with a truth bomb. And those are always the worst kind."

J'onn looked up, his eyes filled with a raw pain. "She lied to me, Adam. All this time. She's one of them. A White Martian."

Adam nodded. "I know. And that's a lot to process. But sometimes, the truth is complicated, J'onn. People do terrible things, and they carry those burdens. M'gann chose to tell you. She chose to be honest, even knowing it would hurt you. That takes courage. And maybe… maybe she deserves a chance to prove that she's not them. That she's chosen a different path. Forgiveness is hard. But sometimes, it's the only way to heal. For both of you."

J'onn was silent for a long moment, then a faint, almost imperceptible nod. Adam's words, though simple, resonated with him. He saw Adam's compassion, his ability to see beyond the surface, to understand the complexities of alien existence and the nuances of truth. J'onn's trust in Adam was further cemented.

Suddenly, alarms blared throughout the D.E.O. Cyborg Superman. He was here. He burst through the wall, a terrifying vision of steel and malice, his eyes glowing red. He began to unleash energy blasts, targeting D.E.O. personnel.

Adam didn't hesitate. He saw a D.E.O. agent, frozen in terror, directly in the path of a searing energy blast.

[ADAPT SYSTEM: Host in danger. Threat: Cyborg Superman's energy blast. Adaptation: Doubled energy absorption and resistance.]

Adam lunged, stepping in front of the agent. The energy blast slammed into him, and he felt the familiar surge of power, the faint glow around his body. The energy washed over him, absorbed and dissipated, leaving him unharmed. He then deflected a follow-up physical attack from Cyborg Superman, sending a jolt through the cyborg's arm. "Seriously, dude? You're going to need a better aim than that! And maybe a better stylist. That metal arm is so last season."

Cyborg Superman paused, his red eyes narrowing, surprised by the human's resilience. Adam continued to defend D.E.O. personnel, his Adapt System activating whenever a direct threat materialized, making him a surprisingly effective, if temporary, shield. Kara, watching him, her heart pounding, saw his bravery, his quick thinking, his unwavering commitment to protecting others. Her admiration deepened.

Later, after Cyborg Superman was repelled (thanks in part to Winn's quick thinking, no doubt fueled by Adam's subtle "insights" about cybernetic weaknesses), Kara found Adam, looking a little winded but otherwise fine.

"You were amazing," Kara said, her voice filled with awe. "You took his blast. You protected everyone."

Adam shrugged, offering a tired grin. "Just doing my part. Someone had to. And besides, I'm surprisingly good at taking a hit. It's my superpower. Along with knowing way too much about everything. And making sarcastic comments. It's a very specific skillset." He paused, then his voice grew serious. "You okay though? That was… intense."

Kara nodded, leaning into his presence. "I am now. Thanks to you." She saw his bravery, his quick thinking, his unwavering commitment to protecting others. Her admiration deepened, and the quiet romantic tension between them was almost palpable.
