Chapter 27: Changing and a New Ally

The new threat was insidious, a twisted perversion of science: Cadmus was using alien technology to turn humans into super-powered villains, creating a terrifying army of unwilling combatants. Adam watched the news reports with a grimace. "Because apparently, regular supervillains weren't enough. Now we need enhanced, unwilling ones. Thanks, Cadmus. Real classy."

And then there was Mon-El. The Daxamite prince, a charming, arrogant, and utterly bewildered alien who had crashed on Earth. Adam observed his struggles to adapt to Earth culture with a mixture of amusement and exasperation. "He's like a frat boy from another galaxy. Someone needs to teach him about personal space. And not hitting on every single woman he sees."

Adam found Mon-El in the D.E.O. cafeteria, attempting to eat a hot dog with a fork and knife, looking utterly confused by the concept of condiments.

"So, enjoying Earth cuisine, huh?" Adam quipped, sitting opposite him, holding a very normal, very non-fork-and-knife-required sandwich. "It's an acquired taste. Like, say, reality TV. Or the concept of 'personal space.' You'll get there. Eventually."

Mon-El looked up, a bewildered expression on his face. "This… this 'hot dog.' It is… squishy. And the yellow paste… it burns."

"That's mustard, buddy," Adam explained, trying to suppress a laugh. "It's a classic. And yeah, hot dogs are a journey. But hey, you're a fish out of water, right? New planet, new rules. It's like being dropped into a video game without a tutorial. You're going to make some mistakes. You're going to annoy some people. But eventually, you'll figure out the cheat codes. Or, you know, just learn to blend in. Whichever comes first."

Mon-El stared at him, then slowly, a faint smile touched his lips. "You… you understand."

"More than you know," Adam said with a wink. "Now, about these Cadmus guys. They're turning people into super-powered bad guys, right? And they're using alien tech. You know, sometimes, when you're dealing with alien tech that's been repurposed, it can have a specific frequency that can reverse the process. Or a hidden failsafe. Like, a 'undo' button for accidental supervillain creation. Just a thought."

Later, Adam found Winn looking stressed, trying to analyze the Cadmus-enhanced humans. "Their powers are unstable, Adam," Winn explained. "We can't find a way to reverse the transformation. It's like the tech is permanently fused with their DNA."

Adam leaned over the console. "Permanently fused, huh? You know, I was watching this old documentary about genetic engineering. And sometimes, even if something seems permanent, there's a way to disrupt the cellular bond. Like, a specific sonic frequency that vibrates the alien tech loose. Or a targeted energy pulse that overloads the foreign elements without harming the host. It's like, they're trying to play God, but they're forgetting the basic rules of biology. And ethics. Mostly ethics."

Winn's eyes widened. "A sonic frequency? An energy pulse? You think…?"

"Hey, I just watch the documentaries," Adam said with a shrug. "But if you're going to mess with someone's DNA, you better have a good undo button. Or a really good lawyer. Now go get 'em, tiger. And try not to turn anyone into a giant mutant hamster. Unless it's a really cute one."

Adam also tried to teach Mon-El some ridiculous Earth slang throughout the day, much to Kara's exasperation. "No, Mon-El, you don't say 'that's fetch.' Nobody says 'fetch.' It's not going to happen."

Mon-El, however, found Adam's irreverent humor and surprising patience refreshing. He was a strange human, but a kind one. Adam and Mon-El began to establish a tentative, often humorous, friendship, a bond built on shared alien experiences (even if Adam's were purely theoretical). Kara appreciated Adam's patience with Mon-El, seeing another facet of his compassionate nature.

"He's good for him," Kara thought, watching Adam explain the concept of "Netflix and chill" to a bewildered Mon-El. "He's helping him find his way. Just like he helped me."
