Chapter 24: The Martian and a Hidden Past
The D.E.O. was a place of constant tension, but lately, a new, heavy silence had settled over J'onn J'onzz. The arrival of new alien threats, coupled with the lingering trauma of his identity being exposed, had brought his past to the forefront. The destruction of Mars, the loss of his family, the genocide of his people – it was a burden he carried alone, a shadow that clung to him.
Adam, ever observant, noticed the subtle shifts in J'onn's demeanor. The deeper lines around his eyes, the more distant gaze. He knew J'onn's backstory, the immense pain he carried. Some wounds never truly heal. You just learn to live with the scars.
He found J'onn in a quiet corner of the D.E.O., staring at a holographic image of Mars, a planet ravaged by fire.
"Rough day at the office, Green Guy?" Adam asked softly, his usual sarcasm muted by genuine empathy. "Looks like someone's having a bad memory day. And I thought my family reunions were awkward. At least we don't usually have planet-destroying flashbacks."
J'onn turned, his expression stoic, but Adam saw the flicker of pain in his eyes. "The past… it always finds a way to haunt us, Adam."
"Yeah, well, the past is like a bad ex," Adam said, leaning against the console. "It's always trying to sneak back into your life. But you don't have to let it. You survived, J'onn. You're here. And you're doing good. That's what matters. You're honoring their memory by living, by fighting for this world. That's a pretty powerful legacy, if you ask me."
J'onn was silent for a moment, then a faint, almost imperceptible nod. He appreciated Adam's quiet support, his surprising understanding. He saw Adam as a compassionate and surprisingly insightful human, someone who, despite his quirks, genuinely cared.
Later, as the D.E.O. faced a new alien threat – a parasitic alien that fed on fear – Adam subtly provided information to Winn. "You know," Adam mused, pointing at a schematic of the alien. "I was watching this documentary about parasitic organisms. And sometimes, they have a specific vulnerability to, like, a sudden environmental change. Or a specific frequency that disrupts their nervous system. Or maybe, if they feed on fear, they're vulnerable to… extreme courage. Or, you know, a really bad stand-up comedy routine. Just a thought."
Winn looked at him, then at the schematics, a spark of an idea in his eyes. "Extreme courage? A specific frequency? You think…?"
"Hey, I'm just a guy who watches too many nature documentaries," Adam said with a shrug. "But if you're going to fight something that feeds on fear, maybe the best weapon is no fear at all. Or, you know, a really good sonic disruptor. Your call."
J'onn, observing Adam's subtle guidance and his unwavering support for Kara, felt his respect for the human grow. Adam continued to be a supportive presence for Kara, even as she dealt with the broader alien community, navigating the complexities of their world with a surprising grace. He was becoming an integral part of their team, not just a curious observer.
"He is a good man," J'onn thought, watching Adam offer a comforting word to a distraught alien refugee. "A true friend. And a surprising ally."
