Chapter 22: Myriad's Aftermath and a Confession
The D.E.O. was a hive of controlled chaos. Post-Myriad, the agency was a mess of debriefings, damage assessments, and the quiet, lingering trauma of having been mind-controlled. Alex, usually a pillar of stoicism, was a tightly wound spring, her grief over Astra's death compounded by the terrible secret she carried: she, not J'onn, had delivered the fatal blow. Adam observed her, knowing the burden she was shouldering. "Secrets are like Kryptonite, Alex. They might not kill you outright, but they'll definitely weigh you down."
He found Alex in an empty interrogation room, staring at a blank wall, her posture rigid.
"Rough day at the office, huh, Danvers?" Adam said, his voice quiet, leaning against the doorframe. "Looks like someone needs a vacation. Preferably somewhere without aliens. Or mind control. Or, you know, family drama."
Alex flinched, then slowly turned. Her eyes were red-rimmed, exhausted. "It's… it's a lot, Adam. The cleanup from Myriad. And… everything else." She didn't elaborate, but Adam knew. He knew the secret.
"Yeah, 'everything else' can be a real pain," Adam said, his voice gentle. "Especially when it's something you can't talk about. Secrets are heavy, Alex. They weigh you down. And sometimes, the truth, no matter how painful, is the only thing that sets you free. Not that I'm an expert in emotional baggage, mind you. My therapist told me I have the emotional range of a teaspoon." He offered a small, self-deprecating smile.
Alex managed a faint, humorless laugh. "A teaspoon, huh? You hide it well." She paused, then looked at him, a flicker of desperation in her eyes. "What do you do, Adam? When you have a secret that could… destroy everything?"
Adam met her gaze, his own eyes serious. "You find someone you trust. Someone who won't judge. Someone who'll just listen. And then you tell them. Or, you know, you write it down and burn it. Whatever works. But carrying it alone? That's a recipe for disaster. Trust me. I've seen enough movies to know how that ends. Usually with a dramatic monologue and a lot of crying."
Alex was silent for a long moment, then she nodded, a slow, almost imperceptible movement. She didn't confess to him directly, not yet, but Adam saw the seed of truth planted. He continued to be a quiet, constant presence for Kara, helping her with day-to-day tasks that felt overwhelming in her grief. He'd make sure she ate, that she got some rest, that she wasn't completely consumed by her sorrow.
He even managed a subtle, well-timed, sarcastic comment about the D.E.O.'s "top-secret emotional support group for alien-related trauma" during a particularly tense meeting, earning a few bewildered looks and a suppressed chuckle from Winn.
Alex, observing Adam's unwavering support for Kara, and his surprisingly insightful comments, began to see him not just as Kara's quirky friend, but as a genuinely insightful and supportive person. She saw the quiet strength beneath his sarcasm, the genuine care he held for Kara. The romantic tension between Adam and Kara was now a quiet, undeniable undercurrent, acknowledged implicitly by both. It was in the lingering glances, the shared silences, the way they instinctively sought each other out.
"He's more than just a human with a weird system," Alex thought, watching Adam gently guide a still-shaken Kara through a stack of paperwork. "He's… he's good for her. And maybe… maybe he's good for us too."
