POV: Ember
My heart stopped beating when the ambulance doors slammed shut.
I was holding my babies in the back while the paramedics worked on Cade. Machines were beeping everywhere, and there was so much blood on his shirt that I couldn't look away.
"His blood pressure is dropping fast," one paramedic said to the other. "We're losing him."
"No," I whispered, holding my twins closer. "You can't lose him."
The words Cade had said to me kept playing in my mind like a broken record. "The mate bond... it was always you." How could I have been so wrong about everything?
All this time, I thought he threw me away like garbage. I thought he chose duty over love. But he was trying to save my life.
Ash squeezed into the ambulance next to me, his shoulder wrapped in bloody bandages. "Ember, are you okay?"
