Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: The Anatomy of a Ghost

Morning came to the island. It was a beautiful thing. The light was so sharp it cut through the mist that was still hanging around. Eva stood on the porch of the stone cottage. She was barefoot. Her toes were curled over the cold planks.. The sun was already warming them up. It was so quiet on the island. The kind of quiet that felt alive. Not like the city where the quiet just felt empty.

On the island the quiet was like the sound of the ocean hitting the rocks. It was like the islands heartbeat. Eva looked at her hands. They were clean now. Kevin had cleaned them up for her the night. He had wiped away the dirt and the old blood. His hands were so gentle. It was hard to believe he could be so gentle and still be able to hurt people.

The scars on her hands were still there though. There was a line on her palm from when she fell a time ago.. There was a new scar on her shoulder from the bullet that had almost killed her. Eva felt like she was a map now. Every scar told a story about something she had been through.

Kevin came up behind her. Put his arms around her waist. He felt solid and strong. He put his face into her neck. Breathed in deeply. He could smell the ocean and the soap she had used.. There was something else too. Something that was Eva.

"You are thinking much " Kevin said. His breath was warm on her skin.

"I am thinking about the drive " Eva said. She let her head fall back against his shoulder. "We could have run away Kevin. I got rid of our leverage."

Kevin turned her around to face him. His eyes were burning with a loyalty. "You did not get rid of leverage Eva. You got rid of chains. Long as we had that drive we were playing their game. Now we are free. We can do what we want."

He pulled out a satellite phone. "Miguel left a plane for us. It is ready to go. We can leave at dusk."

"Where are we going?" Eva asked.

Kevin smiled. It was an dangerous smile. "Someplace they do not control. Someplace we can be ourselves."

The rest of the day felt weird. It felt like the whole world had narrowed down to the two of them. They did not have to put up walls. They could just be themselves. They had lunch together. It was fish and fruit.. Every touch felt like a secret. Every look felt like a promise.

Eva asked Kevin to tell her the truth. Not the kind of truth he told to CEOs. The real truth. "I want to know about the boy you used to be " she said. "Before you became the man you're now."

Kevins knife paused. He stared at the blade. "I never wanted to be this person " he said. "I wanted to build things. I wanted to make things that would last.. Then I learned that if you do not own everything someone will take it away from you. So I built an empire. I thought that if I owned enough I would be safe."

He looked at Eva. ". Then you showed up. You were like a storm. You were so free. I could not buy you. I could not predict you. I did not want to own you Eva. I wanted to understand you."

Eva reached out. Touched his jaw. "I was not free Kevin. I was just running. I was running from the shadows."

"Are you still running?" Kevin asked. His voice was rough.

"No " Eva said. "I am done running. For the time I am where I want to be."

As night started to fall Miguel came back. He had a bag of guns and stuff. "We have a problem " he said. "They know you are here. They are coming for you."

Eva and Kevin got ready to go. They put on their clothes. Grabbed their guns. They were ready to fight.

"Stick close " Kevin said.

Eva smiled. "I am not a bystander. We stick together."

They ran across the island hiding in the shadows. They could hear the helicopters coming.

"They are early " Kevin said. "Miguel we need to get to the boat."

Eva had an idea. "Lets use the sea caves. The tide is low enough."

Kevin smiled. "That is an idea."

They ran through the caves. It was dark and cold.. They could hear the mercenaries above them. They were hunting for them.

Suddenly a flare went off. There were shouts and bullets everywhere.

Eva and Kevin ran. They were firing their guns. Trying to get away.

At the pier Miguel was waiting for them. He had a boat.

"Get in!" he shouted.

Eva jumped in. Turned to pull Kevin in.. Just as he was jumping a bullet hit him. He spun around his shoulder bleeding.

Eva screamed. She jumped out of the boat. Grabbed Kevin. She pulled him in. Miguel started the engine.

Eva held Kevins wound. She was trying to stop the bleeding. "You are going to be fine Kevin. You are going to be fine."

Kevin smiled. He was pale and hurting. "I told you I would burn the world for you."

Eva was crying.. She was not shaking. "Do not die, Kevin Fontaine. The movie is not yet."

They drove away from the island. Kevins head was, in Evas lap. She was holding his wound and praying.

The moon was huge. The ocean was silver. They were free now. They had escaped.

Kevin grabbed Evas hand. "We did it. We vanished."

Eva looked out at the ocean. "We are not just gone, Kevin. We are the nightmares they will never wake up from."

She smiled. She had found her role. She was not a script. She was free.. Kevin was free too. They were running wild and free together.
