Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: Georgetown

Three days went by. Kevin and Eva got almost nothing and everything at the same time. Kevin dug into the bunkers computers checking little pieces from Evas drive against twenty years of money papers. Meanwhile Eva turned the hangar into a gym running through exercises until her hands were bleeding and she was out of breath. They barely slept, maybe four hours a night and neither of them said anything about it.

On the night Kevin found Eva sitting on the hangar floor leaning against the cold wall staring off into space with a water bottle in her hand that she had not touched.

"Thinking about your dad?" Kevin asked,. It was not really a question.

"I used to think he was an accountant who worked too much " Eva said. "I was mad at him for missing my school events and birthdays.. Now? Now I find out he made a lot of money. I do not even know if I should be mad at him anymore.. If I should feel sorry for him."

Kevin sat down beside her being careful with his shoulder. "You can feel both " he said. "I spent ten years hating my dad for what he did and missing him for the time before he did it. When someone dies you do not have to choose how you feel."

She looked at Kevin and for a second everything else went away. They were two very tired people both carrying a lot of sadness. "How do you deal with all of this?" she asked. "The company, the crimes, the memories?"

"Not well " Kevin said. ". I have had a lot of practice."

Eva rested her head on Kevins shoulder and he did not make her move. They sat there not talking about their plan or the people they were trying to catch just enjoying the quiet and the fact that they were together.

By Friday their plan was ready.

---

The Whitfield fundraiser was at a house in Georgetown, a place with a lot of secrets hidden behind pretty walls and nice gardens. The house looked harmless. It was not. Black cars were parked outside. Waiters in white gloves were serving expensive champagne.

Eva walked in wearing a dress that hid a small gun at her leg and a fake earpiece. She knew how to fit in how to make people think she belonged. She used to be a stuntwoman. That was mostly acting, making the camera forget who you really were. Tonight she was pretending to be a woman and her audience was a group of important people.

"You look like you were born in that room " Kevin said in her ear. He was in a van a blocks away watching the house cameras on his computer.

"I was born in a trailer park " Eva said, smiling at a man who was talking to her. "I just know how to pretend. It is a family thing I guess."

"Whitfield is in the study " Kevin said. "He will be alone for a minutes at ten. You will have six minutes when the guards change."

Eva walked through the crowd smiling and talking to people but not really listening. She knew how to disappear how to make people think she was like them.

At 9:54 she slipped away from the group. Went upstairs. The guards were busy with a spilled tray of champagne courtesy of Kevin.

She found the study door open. Whitfield was inside talking on the phone his back to her.

"Tell the lawyers to keep it quiet until Monday " he said. "It is okay if no one panics. The girl is presumed dead. The son is presumed dead. No evidence just noise and noise goes away."

Eva closed the door quietly.

Whitfield turned around. He looked pale. His phone was still at his ear.

"I will call you back " he. Then he looked at Eva. "You are supposed to be dead."

"I hear that a lot " Eva said, walking further into the room. "You are supposed to be a senator, not a criminal. I guess we are both people tonight."

Whitfields voice was steady now. Eva could see the fear behind his eyes. "You do not know what you are getting into " he said. "Whatever Kevin told you or whatever story you made up for your good walk away. Disappear while you can."

Eva smiled. "Someone else told me the thing last week " she said. "Right before everything fell apart."

Whitfields eyes. Eva saw a little bit of fear. "That was different " he said. "I am not like that."

"No you are worse " Eva said. "You just want to keep secrets not be famous." She pulled out a device from her dress and showed it to Whitfield. "It is not good for you now because everyone downstairs just got an interesting email. They have all the proof they need."

Whitfields hand went to the desk drawer. Eva already had her hand on her gun.

"I would not do that " she said, quiet and steady.

Downstairs people were getting upset yelling and running around. Phones were ringing. Someone was shouting for their car.

Whitfield heard the noise and Eva saw his calm face start to break.

"You have no idea what you have started " he said, his voice desperate. "There are people above me people who're much more powerful. You have declared a war you cannot win."

Eva just smiled. "I have been surviving people like you my life " she said. "I just did not know what to call it until tonight."

Kevins voice came back in her ear. "Eva you need to go. The team is ready. Security is getting tighter."

Eva kept looking at Whitfield watching him get more and more scared. Then she. Walked out of the room into the chaos downstairs.

She disappeared into the crowd leaving Senator Whitfield alone with his ringing phone and his broken reputation. He realized that somewhere in rooms he had never even seen other phones were starting to ring, phones belonging to people who do not forgive mistakes and who were just about to find out that the secret they had buried deep was now out in the open thanks, to a stuntwoman.
