Chapter 5: Fire and Redemption
The ballroom went dark. It felt like something was inside with us. It was like hunger and menace were pushing in from every corner. The explosion made the chandeliers fall and glass was everywhere. It was like a storm. People were. All I could hear was my own heartbeat. It was really loud.
Someone grabbed my arm. It was Sandra. "Eva we have to go. Before he finds you."
She was scared. She was also very strong. There was soot and tears on her face.
I said "Sandra what are you doing here? You could get hurt."
Sandra just said "I found the files, Eva. Kevin planned everything. He wanted to hurt your father. He has been watching you for years. You were never a random person to him. You mean a lot to him."
My stomach felt bad. I thought about all the times I had with Kevin and now they did not feel so nice. I looked around the room. I saw a lot of smoke. I was looking for Kevin.
I said "I am not leaving until I get some answers."
I did not sound very nice.
Then I heard a gunshot. It was really loud. The floor. Sandra was screaming.. I just looked for Kevin.
He came out of the smoke. He had a gun. He was looking at some men in black clothes. They were coming in through the windows.
Kevin said "Get down."
It was really loud. It made my bones feel funny.
I did not get to move. Kevin pushed me down. Then there was another explosion. It was really hot. I could smell the gunpowder and Kevins cologne.
He said "You tried to leave me."
I said "You killed my father. You ruined my life."
He grabbed my face. Made me look at him. He said "I saved you. I took what was important. I would do anything to keep you."
The Escape and the Spark
Some bad people came into the room. They had guns. They were looking for Kevin.
He said "Stay behind me."
I did not listen. I saw one of the men try to hurt Kevin. I kicked him.
Kevin looked at me. He almost smiled. He said "That is my girl."
We fought together. Then we got into an elevator.
It was really quiet in the elevator. I was. My dress was ruined. Kevin was. His hair was everywhere. He pushed me against the wall. Held my hands.
He said "You fought for me."
I said "I fought for myself."
I did not sound very sure.
He. Said "You cannot lie to me."
He leaned in. Kissed me. It was not a kiss. It was rough and messy.
The Safe House
We got out of the elevator. We got into Kevins car. We drove to a house. It was really nice. It felt empty.
Kevin took me to a room with a lot of computers and a safe. He said "Do you want to know the truth?"
He opened the safe. There were a lot of pictures of me. Kevin had been taking pictures of me for a time.
There was a contract at the bottom of the safe. It was signed by my father. It said that my father trusted Kevin to take care of me.
The last line was blacked out. I said "What does it say?"
Kevin said "It is a secret that my father took to his grave. It is something that would make you very safe."
He said "I did not kill your father. I was trying to help him."
Then I saw a light, on Kevins chest. I said "Get down."
Then the window broke.
