Chapter 39 - The Lion's Den

Day 2. Forty-eight hours left.

Sarah woke us before dawn. Face pale. Hands shaking.

"They're moving faster than I thought." She thrust photos at me. "The machine—it's almost complete."

I was dressed in seconds. Mei Lian beside me, already awake, already ready.

"How long?"

"Days. Maybe hours." Sarah pulled up more images on her laptop. "And there's something else. Webb is bringing in... people. Not normal. They move wrong. Feel wrong."

Mei Lian leaned in. Studied the photos. Went rigid.

"Describe them."

"Pale. Too still. Eyes that don't blink." Sarah's voice cracked. "I watched one for five minutes. It didn't breathe."

We exchanged glances.

Corrupted. Or something like them.

Mei Lian's voice dropped. "He's not just siphoning magic. He's summoning. Bringing things through before the door is fully open."

I stared at the photos. At the creatures. At the machine that was creating them.

"How many?"

"At least a dozen. Maybe more." Sarah swallowed. "Ren, if those things get out—"

"They won't." I was already moving. "Get dressed. We're leaving now."

"Leaving for where?"

"The facility. Tonight."

Sarah's eyes went wide. "That's insane. There's guards. Cameras. Those things—"

"Which is why we go at night, fast, and hit hard." I grabbed my gear. "Mei Lian and I handle the creatures. You guide us through the facility. We find Webb, destroy the machine, end this."

"Just the three of us?"

I met her eyes.

"I've faced worse with less."

---

Night – The Facility

The fence was electric. Cameras swept the perimeter. Guards patrolled with rifles and dogs.

We watched from the tree line, hidden in darkness.

"Front door's suicide," Sarah whispered. "But there's a service tunnel. Old maintenance access from before Webb bought the place. My schematics show it connects to the lower levels."

"Guards?"

"None. But it's tight. Single file. If we're caught—"

"We won't be." I looked at Mei Lian. "Ready?"

She smiled. "Always."

I turned to Sarah. "Stay behind us. If things go bad, run. Don't look back."

She nodded. Pale but steady.

We moved.

---

The Tunnel

Dark. Narrow. Walls dripping with condensation.

Sarah's small light guided us. Mei Lian walked point, senses extended. I watched our rear.

Minutes passed. Nothing.

Then Mei Lian stopped. Raised a hand.

"Something ahead."

I listened. Heard it—scraping. Breathing. Wrong breathing.

"Corrupted?"

"Different. Newer. Fresher." She drew her weapon. "Stay behind me."

We crept forward.

The tunnel opened into a larger space—a maintenance junction. And in the center, three figures.

Pale. Still. Eyes that reflected light like animal eyes.

They turned as we entered.

Too fast. Too synchronized.

Mei Lian moved.

The Fight

She was beautiful in combat.

Staff spinning. Magic flowing. Eastern Consortium techniques passed down for generations. The first creature fell before it could scream.

The second lunged. I met it with fire—Flame Spark concentrated, piercing. It shrieked. Collapsed.

The third hesitated.

Mei Lian didn't. It joined its friends.

Silence.

Sarah stared at the bodies. "What—how—"

"No time." I stepped over them. "We're in. Where's the machine?"

She shook herself. Checked schematics. "Up one level. Main chamber. But Ren—if there were three here, there'll be more up there."

I knew.

I kept walking.

---

The Machine

The chamber was massive.

At its center, a structure of metal and crystal hummed with power. Energy pulsed through it—magic pulled from the earth, concentrated, focused. Above it, the air shimmered. Something pushing through from somewhere else.

And beside it, Marcus Webb.

He stood alone. No guards. No creatures. Just him, watching his creation with the satisfaction of a god.

"You're early," he said without turning. "I expected you tomorrow."

I stepped forward. Mei Lian and Sarah behind me.

"You know who we are."

"Of course." He turned. Young. Handsome. Eyes too old. "The boy from another world. The girl from the Eastern Consortium. And Sarah—" He smiled at her. "—my favorite pest. You've been trouble for years."

Sarah's voice shook. "You're destroying our world."

"Preserving it. Harvesting it. There's a difference." He spread his arms. "This world is dying. Has been for centuries. I'm just making use of the remains."

Mei Lian's voice cold. "You're summoning corrupted. Bringing them through."

"Not corrupted. Guests. From a world that wants what this one has." He glanced at the shimmering air. "They'll be here soon. And when they arrive, they'll reward me handsomely."

I stepped forward. Spark blazing.

"Not today."

Webb laughed.

"You're powerful, boy. I'll give you that. But you're also stupid." He snapped his fingers.

The room filled with creatures.

Dozens. Emerging from shadows. Crawling from vents. Pulling themselves from the walls.

Sarah screamed.

Mei Lian raised her staff.

I looked at the army. At Webb. At the machine still humming.

And I smiled.

"You should have built more."
