Chapter 1: The First Door
The door shimmered like heat on summer pavement.
I'd seen magic for years. Fought with it. Lived it. But this—a portal between worlds, hanging in the air like a wound in reality—made everything else feel small.
"Step through." The Curator's voice echoed from everywhere and nowhere. "You have seventy-two hours. Then the portal closes for one month."
Seventy-two hours. Three days. Not much time.
I looked at my team. Lyra. Darius. Mira. Theo. All of them here, watching, waiting.
Lyra stepped forward first. Grabbed me. Hugged tight.
"Seventy-two hours. Then you come back." Not a question.
"Then I come back."
Darius clasped my shoulder. "Don't die on Earth. That'd be embarrassing."
Mira hugged me next. Theo too. All of them.
Then Mei Lian stepped beside me.
"I'm coming with you."
I blinked. "You are?"
"You didn't think I'd let you face your old world alone, did you?" She took my hand. "Together, remember?"
I nodded. Squeezed back.
The Curator's voice: "The portal accepts her. She is bound to you now. This is good."
Bound to me. I liked the sound of that.
"Seventy-two hours," I said to my team. "Then we're back. Don't do anything stupid while we're gone."
Darius grinned. "No promises."
I took a breath. Squeezed Mei Lian's hand.
We stepped through.
---
The world twisted.
Not painfully—more like being folded, stretched, remade. Colors I'd never seen. Sounds that weren't sounds. Then—
Concrete. Glass. Streetlights.
I stood on Earth.
My old city. My old life. But different. Wrong.
The air smelled of exhaust and rain and something else—something faint and dying. Magic hung in the atmosphere like smoke after a fire. Present. Barely. Fading.
Mei Lian gasped beside me. "It's beautiful and terrible."
"It's home." I looked around. "And it's dying."
The street was empty. Late evening. Familiar buildings—a convenience store on the corner, apartments above, a bus stop I'd waited at a hundred times.
"I was here," I whispered. "In my old life. I drove these streets."
Mei Lian squeezed my hand. Said nothing.
A voice behind us: "You shouldn't be here."
We spun.
A woman stood in the shadows. Young—maybe twenty-five. Dark hair. Intense eyes that saw too much. She held something—a device, glowing faintly.
"I've been watching the readings for years," she said. "Something was wrong. Something was opening. And now—" She stared at us. "—now you're here."
She stepped forward. The light caught her face.
Not hostile. Curious. Desperate.
"My name is Sarah Chen. And I think we need to talk."

A Coffee Shop. Midnight.
Sarah Chen talked fast.
She was a researcher. Physics, originally. Then she'd stumbled onto something—anomalies in background radiation. Patterns that shouldn't exist. Traces of... something.
"Magic," she said flatly. "I know how it sounds. But I've spent five years proving it's real."
She pulled out papers. Graphs. Data. Photos of places where reality seemed... thinner.
"These are hotspots. Places where whatever's dying is dying slower." She pointed at a map covered in marks. "They're all over the world. But no one believes me. No one sees."
Mei Lian studied the map. "She's right. These places—they're where old magic once flourished. The last embers."
Sarah stared at her. "You can see it? Actually see it?"
"I'm from another world. Magic is real there."
Sarah's mouth opened. Closed. Opened again.
"Another—" She stopped. Laughed. Hysterical. "Five years. Five years of people calling me crazy. And you're just... from another world."
"Pretty much."
Sarah looked at me. "And you? You're from here originally?"
"Died here. Reborn there. Came back to save it."
She stared at me for a long, long moment.
Then she stood. Paced. Ran hands through her hair.
"Okay. Okay okay okay. This is insane. But I've been chasing insane for five years." She stopped. Faced us. "What do you need?"
"Information. Places to start. Someone who knows this world."
"You got it." She grabbed her bag. "But we have to move fast. There are others watching. People who've noticed the anomalies too."
"Others?"
"Not friendly." She headed for the door. "Come on. I'll explain on the way."
---
Outside. Moving.
Sarah walked fast. We followed.
"A year ago, a corporation started buying up hotspot locations. Quietly. Through shell companies." She glanced at us. "Marcus Webb. CEO of Aether Group. Young. Rich. Appeared from nowhere five years ago."
The name meant nothing. But something in her tone...
"He's connected to this," I said.
"I think he knows. About the magic. About the dying. About everything." She stopped at a car. Old. Reliable. "And I think he's not human."
Mei Lian tensed. "What do you mean?"
"His company's building something. At the biggest hotspot. Some kind of machine." She opened the car door. "I have photos. Schematics. Stole them three months ago."
I looked at Mei Lian. She nodded.
"We need to see this place."
Sarah almost smiled. "Thought you'd never ask."
---
Three Hours Later – The Hotspot
The facility sat outside the city. New construction. Guarded. Humming with energy I could feel from miles away.
We watched from a ridge, hidden in trees.
"That's it," Sarah whispered. "Aether Group's pride and joy."
Mei Lian's eyes widened. "Ren. That energy—it's not just magic. It's siphoning. Pulling magic from the earth. Concentrating it."
"Like a battery?"
"Like a weapon."
I studied the facility. Guards. Fences. Cameras. And something else—something that made my spark scream.
"Whoever built this knows exactly what they're doing."
Sarah nodded. "Marcus Webb. I told you."
I watched the facility. Thought about Earth. About the Curator. About the choice I'd made.
Seventy-two hours. Not enough time to fix everything. But enough to start.
"Sarah. You said you have schematics?"
"Buried. Safe."
"Good. We study them. Learn what he's building. Then—" I looked at the facility. "—we decide how to stop it."
She stared at me. "Just like that? Three people against a corporation?"
I almost smiled.
"I've fought worse."

Dawn – Sarah's Apartment
Small. Cluttered. Covered in papers, photos, equipment.
Sarah dug through files while Mei Lian studied the schematics.
"This is bad," Mei Lian said quietly.
"How bad?"
"The machine—it's not just siphoning magic. It's channeling. Focusing it somewhere." She traced lines on the schematic. "If I'm reading this right, he's trying to open a door. Like the Curator's portal. But bigger."
"To where?"
"Don't know. But if he succeeds—" She looked at me. "—it won't be just Earth that's in danger."
Sarah froze. "You mean—"
"Your world. My world. Both." Mei Lian's voice steady. "This machine could tear holes between realities. And whoever controls it controls everything."
Silence.
Then Sarah laughed. Bitter.
"Five years I thought I was crazy. Now I find out the world's ending and I was right all along." She looked at me. "So what do we do?"
I thought about my team. About the Curator. About everything I'd learned.
"We stop him. Fast. Before he finishes."
"And if we can't?"
I met her eyes.
"We find help. Build an army. Fight anyway."
She stared at me. Then slowly smiled.
"You really are from another world. No one here talks like that."
"It's been a long journey."
---
Evening – Day 1 Ends
Mei Lian and I sat on Sarah's rooftop, watching city lights.
"Seventy-two hours," she said. "Day one almost gone."
"We've learned a lot."
"Not enough." She leaned against me. "Ren. If we fail—"
"We won't."
"Optimist."
"Realist." I put my arm around her. "I've faced worse. Corrupted. Nobles. Draven Blackwood. This is just another fight."
She smiled. Kissed my cheek.
"I love that you believe that."
I looked at the city. At the world I'd left behind. At the woman beside me.
"Seventy-two hours. Let's make them count."
