Chapter 40 - Sixty Seconds

The creatures charged.

Mei Lian met them like a blade. Staff spinning. Magic flowing. Each strike precise, deadly, beautiful—Eastern Consortium techniques passed down through generations, now unleashed on monsters from beyond reality.

I fought beside her. Fire and water and steam—everything Elara taught me, everything the Curator unlocked, everything I'd become. Flame Spike pierced three creatures in succession. Water Whip snapped another's neck. Steam Veil blinded a cluster, letting Mei Lian cut through them like wheat.

Sarah hid behind a control console, useless in combat but alive. Her eyes wide. Her mouth moving in prayers or curses.

Minutes passed. Creatures fell. More came.

Dozens. Then dozens more. The room filled with pale bodies and empty eyes and claws that never stopped reaching.

Webb watched from beside his machine. Calm. Smiling. Like this was entertainment.

"You can't win," he called over the chaos. "There are too many. This world is mine. Your world will be mine. Everything dies eventually—I'm just collecting the pieces."

I ignored him. Kept fighting.

But he was right. There were too many.

Mei Lian's movements slowed. Just slightly. Fatigue. She'd been fighting for days—the portal, the travel, the lack of sleep. Her homeland's best techniques meant nothing when her body gave out.

I saw it coming before it happened.

A creature lunged from her blind spot. She spun—too slow. Staff blocked, but off-balance. A second creature hit her from the side.

She went down.

Screamed.

I spun. Saw her on the ground, creature over her, claws raised. Others closing in. Dozens between us.

Something inside me snapped.

Duration: 60 seconds. Use them wisely.

The world changed.

Everything slowed. Colors sharpened. I could see each creature's movements before they made them, trace the paths of their attacks, calculate every possible outcome.

Sixty seconds.

I moved.

---

Second 1-5: The Gap

Twenty creatures between me and Mei Lian.

I didn't go through them. I went over. Steam Veil launched me upward, Water Whip catching a ceiling beam, swinging across the room like something from a dream.

Creatures below looked up. Too slow.

I landed beside her.

Second 6: The Save

The creature above Mei Lian never saw me.

Flame Spike through its skull. Instant. Silent. It crumpled.

I grabbed her. Pulled her behind me. "Stay down."

She stared at me. Saw something in my eyes she'd never seen.

"Ren—"

"Stay. Down."

Second 10-25: The Clearing

They came at me. All of them.

I welcomed it.

Fire left—three creatures burning. Water right—two more crushed. Steam center—a wall of blinding heat, buying seconds. Then through it, into them, fists and magic and will.

Each strike perfect. Each movement inevitable. They couldn't touch me. Couldn't see me. Couldn't comprehend what they were fighting.

Twenty creatures fell in fifteen seconds.

Second 26-40: The Machine

Webb's eyes went wide. He stepped back. Toward his creation.

"No—you can't—that's impossible—"

I ignored him. For now.

The machine hummed before me. Crystal and metal and stolen magic. Energy pulsing. The shimmer above it growing stronger—something pushing through, something huge, something that would end everything if it arrived.

I raised both hands.

Fire and water. Not attacking—merging. Steam so hot it would melt metal. Steam so focused it would cut through anything.

I unleashed it.

The machine screamed.

Metal warped. Crystal cracked. Energy burst in wild arcs, destroying creatures, scorching walls, filling the air with ozone and smoke.

The shimmer above flickered. Faltered. Faded.

Second 41-50: Webb

He ran.

Smart man.

I caught him at the door. Hand around his throat. Lifted him off the ground.

"You were saying? About collecting pieces?"

He choked. Struggled. Useless.

I looked at him. This immortal. This would-be god. This man who'd spent years draining my world, summoning monsters, building machines.

"You're not dying today."

Relief flickered in his eyes.

I slammed him into the wall. Heard bones crack. Felt satisfaction.

"But you're not walking either."

His leg bent wrong. He screamed.

I dropped him.

Second 51-60: Return

I stood over him. Breathing hard. Power fading.

Sixty seconds gone.

The room was destruction. Machine shattered. Creatures dead or fleeing. Webb broken on the floor.

Mei Lian limped toward me. Sarah emerged from hiding, staring at everything.

"You..." Sarah whispered. "You did that?"

I looked at my hands. Normal again. Human again.

"We did that."

Then my legs gave out.

Mei Lian caught me. Held me up.

"Idiot," she whispered. But she was smiling.

Aftermath – The Facility

Sarah found restraints. We bound Webb to a chair.

He sat there, leg twisted, face pale, eyes still defiant.

"You think this changes anything?" His voice rasped. "There are others. More machines. More worlds. You can't stop all of them."

I crouched before him.

"Maybe not. But I can stop you."

He laughed. Bitter. "Kill me then. Do it."

"No." I stood. "You're going to talk. Everything you know. Every machine. Every world. Every ally."

"And why would I do that?"

I looked at Mei Lian. At Sarah. At the destroyed machine.

"Because the alternative is me coming back. And next time, I won't stop at one leg."

He stared at me. Saw truth.

For the first time, fear entered his eyes.

---

The Return – Day 3 Morning

We emerged from the facility as dawn broke.

Sarah blinked at the sun. "I can't believe that worked."

"It didn't. We got lucky."

"Luck." She looked at me. "That wasn't luck."

Mei Lian leaned against me. Exhausted. Happy.

"Seventy-two hours," she said. "Almost up."

"Almost."

Sarah stopped. Turned.

"You're leaving."

"Portal closes today. We have to go back."

She nodded. Swallowed.

"What about Webb? The other machines?"

"Webb talks. You record everything. When we return next month, we'll have a plan." I met her eyes. "You're our eyes here, Sarah. Our hands. Can you do that?"

She thought about it. Five years of alone. Five years of no one believing.

Then she straightened.

"Yeah. I can do that."

Mei Lian hugged her. Unexpected. Warm.

"Thank you," Mei Lian whispered. "For everything."

Sarah hugged back. Cried a little.

Then we walked toward the portal.

---

The Door – Noon

The Curator waited.

"You succeeded."

"Mostly."

"Webb lives?"

"For now. He'll talk."

"Good. His knowledge is valuable." It looked at Mei Lian. "You fought well, child of the East."

"She saved me." Mei Lian squeezed my hand. "More than once."

"That is what love does."

We stepped through.

Worlds twisted. Colors shifted. And we stood in the ruins, surrounded by ancient stone and older magic.

Lyra was there. Darius. Mira. Theo. All of them.

"You're back!" Lyra crashed into me. Hugged so tight I couldn't breathe.

Darius clasped my shoulder. "Took you long enough."

Mira hugged Mei Lian. Theo hovered, grinning.

We were home.
