Team Darius – World of Echoes
The girl emerged from the mist like a wound given form.
She was young—maybe sixteen—but her eyes held centuries. The machine's corruption had twisted her, stretched her, made her into something that wasn't quite human anymore. Cracks ran across her skin like a broken vase held together by spite. Sound bled from her with every breath.
"Father sent you," she whispered.
Her voice echoed. Not normally—wrongly. As if multiple versions of her spoke at once, slightly out of sync.
Darius lowered his weapon. "He did. He wants you back."
She smiled. Sad. Hopeless. Beautiful in a broken way.
"There's not enough left."
Mira stepped forward. Healer's instincts overriding caution. "Let me try. Please. I've healed things like this before. Not exactly, but—"
"Nothing like this." The girl's eyes fixed on Mira. Kind. Gentle. "You're good. I can feel it. But some damage doesn't heal."
Theo shifted. Nervous. "Then what do we do?"
The girl looked at each of them. Darius. Mira. Theo. Three people who'd come to save a world they didn't know.
"You're not like the others," she said. "The ones who come with machines. You're... different."
Darius spoke carefully. "We're here to destroy the machine. Free your world. Your father said you were good once. Before it took you."
"Before I let it take me." Her voice cracked. "I volunteered. Did he tell you that?"
Silence.
"I thought I could control it. Use its power to save our world. I was young. Stupid. Arrogant." She looked at her hands—half flesh, half something else. "It used me instead."
Mira's eyes filled with tears. "That's not your fault. You were trying to help."
"Help?" The girl laughed. Bitter. "I've helped the Network destroy three worlds. My hands—" She held them up. "—these hands turned people into guardians. Into glass. Into nothing."
The echoes of her voice carried guilt across the canyon.
Darius stepped forward. Close. Too close for combat.
"What's your name?"
She blinked. Surprised. "What?"
"Your name. Before the machine. What was it?"
She stared at him. No one had asked that in years. Decades. Maybe ever.
"...Lyra."
Darius's expression flickered. Their Lyra. His oldest friend. Same name.
"Lyra," he repeated. Gentle. "We're not here to kill you. We're not here to judge you. We're here to stop the machine and save whoever's left." He met her eyes. "That includes you, if you'll let us."
Lyra of Echoes stared at him. Cracks in her skin pulsed with light.
"You can't save me."
"Maybe. But we can try. And we can promise—whatever happens, we'll remember your name. The real you. Not what the machine made."
Long silence.
Then Lyra spoke. Quiet. Hopeful. Terrified.
"The machine has a failsafe. If you destroy it without disabling the failsafe, it will kill me. And everyone connected to it."
Darius's eyes narrowed. "How do we disable it?"
"I can show you. But—" She hesitated. "—it requires someone to enter the machine's core. Someone with strong magic. Someone who can survive being... unmade."
Everyone looked at Darius.
He cracked his neck. Smiled.
"Finally. Something interesting."

Team Darius – Quest Update
· New Ally: Lyra of Echoes (reluctant, damaged, brave)
· Objective: Enter machine core. Disable failsafe. Destroy machine. Save Lyra.
· Complication: Core will try to unmake you. Literally.
---
The Core
The machine's heart pulsed with stolen sound.
Every scream ever made in this world. Every whisper. Every song. All trapped here, feeding the Network's hunger.
Darius stood at the entrance. Theo and Mira behind him. Lyra beside them, flickering in and out of solidity.
"Once you enter," she said, "you have five minutes. The core will attack your identity—your memories, your sense of self. It will try to convince you that you were always part of it. That you belong here."
Darius snorted. "I barely have a sense of self anyway."
Lyra almost smiled. "That might help."
He looked at his team. At Mira—steady, healing, ready. At Theo—scared but determined. At Lyra—broken but fighting.
"Five minutes. If I'm not back, destroy the machine anyway. Don't let me stop you."
Mira grabbed his arm. "Darius—"
"I'll be fine." He pulled free. "Someone has to be the hero. Might as well be me."
He stepped into the core.
---
Inside
Darkness. Sound. Memory.
His childhood flashed—cold parents, harsh training, loneliness.
His first meeting with Ren—distrust, competition, eventual respect.
His team—Theo's fear, Mira's kindness, Lyra's sharp wit.
The core whispered: You were always alone. They don't really care. You're just useful.
Darius kept walking.
Your father never loved you. Your mother barely noticed you. You're just a weapon.
He remembered Ren's hand on his shoulder after the tournament. "You're my brother."
The core screamed.
THEY LIE! EVERYONE LIES! YOU ARE NOTHING!
Darius smiled.
"Maybe. But I'm their nothing."
He reached the center. A crystal heart, pulsing with stolen lives.
He raised his fist.
And punched.
---
Outside
The machine screamed.
Mira grabbed Theo. Lyra flickered violently.
"He did it," Lyra breathed. "He actually—"
Darius stumbled out. Alive. Bleeding. Grinning.
"Failsafe disabled. Kill this thing."
Theo didn't hesitate. Flame Spike into the crystal heart.
The machine exploded.
Light. Sound. Freedom.
When it cleared, Lyra stood before them. Changed. Cracks fading. Eyes clear.
She looked at her hands. Flesh. Real. Human.
"Thank you," she whispered. "Thank you."
Darius collapsed. Mira caught him.
"Idiot," she murmured. But she was smiling.

The Ruins – Both Teams Return
We met in the Curator's chamber.
Darius limped in, bandaged, insufferably proud. Beside him walked a stranger—young, scarred, but alive.
"Who's this?" I asked.
"Lyra." He grinned. "Not our Lyra. Another one. She's joining us."
Lyra-the-original stepped forward. Studied her counterpart.
"Same name. Same fight." She extended her hand. "Welcome to the Conspiracy."
Lyra-of-Echoes took it. Smiled.
"Thank you."
Mei Lian squeezed my hand. "Two worlds. Two victories."
"Two down. Many to go."
The Curator appeared.
"You have done well. The Network notices. They will respond."
I looked at my team. At our new ally. At the road ahead.
"Then we get ready."
