Chapter 35 - The Truth Beneath Truth

Finals opponents announced: Eastern Consortium's primary team.

Led by someone we knew.

Mei Lian.

I watched the press conference from our quarters. She stood at the podium, calm as still water, fielding questions with effortless grace. Reporters loved her. Crowds adored her. She was everything a champion should be.

When our eyes met through the crystal, she smiled.

Not a competitor's smile. Something else.

She knows.

---

That evening, she found me.

I'd been walking the tournament grounds alone, thinking. The Curator's words. Earth's fate. The choice ahead.

She appeared beside me like mist. Silent. Expected.

"I've been waiting for this," she said. "Not to fight you—to watch you."

"Why?"

"Because the Curator told me about you. About your world. About what you carry."

I stopped walking. Turned to face her.

My blood chilled despite the warm evening.

"You know about the Curator?"

"My people have known for centuries." She leaned against a railing, looking out at the arena. "We're not from this continent originally. We came from across the sea, fleeing our own disasters. Along the way, we found ruins. Ancient places. Traces of those who came before."

"The Curator's people."

"Yes." She glanced at me. "We've been watching this tournament for generations. Waiting for someone like you."

"Someone from another world?"

"Someone chosen. The ruins don't respond to everyone. They choose. And they chose you."

I stared at her.

"The finals aren't about victory, Ren. They're about choice. The Curator's people can only be freed if the tournament winner chooses to free them. The magic of this place—the centuries of competition, the concentrated power—it creates a key. But the key only works if someone turns it."

"You knew? This whole time?"

"Yes." Her eyes held mine, unblinking. "And now you have to decide. Win the finals, then choose: free them or leave them trapped. What will you do?"

I didn't have an answer.

That Night – The Curator's Chamber

I descended alone.

The Curator waited, as always. But something was different. It seemed... anxious.

"You spoke with the Eastern girl."

"Yes. She told me everything."

"Then you understand. The choice is yours alone."

"Why me? Why not someone else? Someone from your own world?"

The Curator was quiet for a long moment.

"Because we failed." Its voice heavy. "Our world died because we were arrogant. We thought we could challenge gods, reshape reality, escape consequence. We were wrong."

It stepped closer.

"When we fled to this world, we brought our arrogance with us. The gods here punished us—sealed us away. But they also left a door. A chance for redemption."

"A door that opens only if someone chooses to open it."

"Yes. Not one of us—we lost that right. Not a native of this world—they cannot understand. But someone like you. Someone from a dying world who carries its hope. Someone who might make a different choice than we did."

I thought about Earth. About everyone I'd left behind. About the slow decay they didn't even notice.

"If I free you—will you help me save Earth?"

The Curator's eyes burned.

"Yes. That is our offer. Freedom for us. Knowledge for you. Together, we might reopen the doors between worlds. Together, we might save yours."

I stood in that vast chamber, weight pressing from all sides.

"One more question."

"Ask."

"When I hit Level 20—my system said something special happens. What is it?"

The Curator smiled.

"Awakening. The moment your past life and present self fully merge. Not just memories—power. Everything you were, combined with everything you've become."

"Will I still be me?"

"More you than ever."

I nodded.

One match. One choice. One future.

Return – Team Meeting

I gathered them in our quarters. Lyra. Darius. Mira. Theo. The core.

Told them everything.

Mei Lian's revelation. The Curator's offer. Earth's fate. The choice ahead.

Silence when I finished.

Long. Heavy.

Then Darius spoke. "So we win the finals, then you decide whether to free ancient beings who might help us save your original world."

"Basically."

"And if you free them, we don't know what happens."

"No."

"And if you don't, Earth dies."

"Eventually."

He leaned back. Stared at the ceiling.

"You have the worst luck of anyone I've ever met."

I almost laughed. "Probably."

Mira spoke softly. "What do you want to do, Ren? Not what they want. Not what's logical. What do you feel?"

I thought about it.

"I feel... responsible. For Earth. For the Curator's people. For all of you. I feel like every choice I make affects more people than I can count." I met her eyes. "And I feel like no matter what I choose, someone loses."

Mira nodded slowly. "That's called being a leader."

Theo's voice small: "We trust you, Captain. Whatever you decide."

Lyra squeezed my hand. "Always."

Darius stood. Extended his hand.

"Team Valdris. Finals. Then we figure out the rest together."

I took it.

"Team Valdris."
