Anna and Sid make a turn into the V-shaped hallway while running from the dogs. Far ahead of them are the stairs leading to the second floor.
When they are a third of the way there, the dogs also make the turn. They are much faster than the girls and are gaining on them quickly.
They can hear the sound of their snarls and barks getting closer as they run.
'Don't look back,' Sid warns Anna, who is a few paces behind her. She wasn't trying to, but Sid didn't know that. She simply warned her based on the impulse she got to look back herself.
The dogs are now only a few steps away from them, and they are almost at the stairs.
Anna does look back to see them.
They are too close. They will catch up while we are trying to climb the stairs.
Knowing the effort will be futile, she tries to look for another way out, right when she spots a light coming from behind the stairs. Along with it comes the sound of waves.
Anna decides to take that route, hoping on the chance that it is what she thinks it is.
'Keep going!' Anna tells Sid as she avoids the stairs entirely.
The dogs follow Anna because of the smell of blood coming from her.
Anna's hunch was right. In front of her is an opening straight out into the sea.
With the dogs three arm's lengths behind her, she jumps out of the opening.
The medium-sized one, being the smarter of the two, stops upon sensing the danger, but the larger one keeps storming through and ends up leaping out of the ship.
Due to the chains binding them together, the medium-sized one begins being pulled into the water . It struggles at the opening to hold onto the ship, but ultimately, due to the weight of the bigger dog, it ends up being pulled out and falls into the water as well.
Sid, on the stairs, notices the silence and turns around to see that no one is behind her. She sprints back down them, just in time to see the medium-sized dog fall out of the ship.
'Don't tell me, Anna!' she yells as she runs towards the opening.
She looks out of it and sees Anna holding onto the stairs at the bottom of the opening.
'A little help?' Anna asks upon noticing Sid.
Sid lets out a faint breath of relief and then bends down to help Anna climb back in.
When Anna gets in, she sits down, panting as she catches her breath for a moment.
'What were you thinking?!
You could have died!
Twice!' Sid yells, furious at Anna for not listening to her.
'Yeah,' Anna replies, mellow and aware of what her bad decision-making has caused.
'You can kill yourself if you want to, but you have to get me out of this mess you put me in first.'
Anna frowns, remembering the selfishness of the person in front of her.
'Well, I'm not dead, and I killed the damn dogs,' Anna says, getting up. 'So let's go. We still have something to do.'
'Now there is definitely no way I can stay here,' Sid comments.
They continue towards their initial destination: the lowest floor.
They pass through the dark hallway without any trouble and arrive at the lowest level.
The entire place is filled with cells, and they can hear the moaning of countless people coming from inside them.
Anna looks into the cells and sees people who are skinny and malnourished, crammed onto the floors of their cells.
About a fifth of them are not moving at all, probably dead.
That is most likely the case, because the place smells of faeces and decay.
'How terrible,' Anna comments, looking around.
Sid pretends not to hear her and leads Anna a bit further until they arrive at the cell where Zane is being kept.
He is leaning against the wall with his head down, his hands chained to the ground.
Anna, fearing for his life, yells into the cell.
'Zane! Zane, are you okay?'
Hearing her voice, he raises his head to see if it is really her. Seeing her, he is bewildered.
'Anna, what are you doing here? I thought you were in a safer place.'
He spots Sid behind her and comes to a conclusion.
'Wasn't betraying us enough for you? Now you want to make us suffer too?'
'No,' Anna corrects him. 'We are going to break out of here. She is following us. She has no other choice.'
'Escape?' he questions.
Hearing talk of breaking out, the other inmates in their cells perk up and begin paying attention.
'Yes,' Anna clarifies, dangling the keys. She gets up and begins opening his cell door. 'We have already set Quin free. He left to get the keys to our escape boat. Are you good to go? You don't look too well.'
Zane quickly grasps the situation.
'I'm fine.'
Anna comes in and unlocks the shackles on Zane's hands.
'Are you sure about her coming with us?' Zane questions Anna, sceptical about being accompanied by the traitor Sid.
'She has her uses,' Anna explains, expressing that she is sure.
Seeing Zane get freed and get up, his cellmates begin to beg.
'Please, free me!'
'Me too!'
'No, me next!'
A woman at the back wearing a dirty server's outfit yells out, 'Please! I have children. They are outside waiting for me. I need to get out of here!'
'I'll give you anything you want!' a man yells from the neighbouring cell. He is wearing a dirty suit. 'I'm a billionaire. My name is Chuck Morin. You might have heard of me before. I'll give you any amount you want. Name it, just get me out of here!'
'These people,' Anna comments, noticing their strange requests.
'Yes,' Zane confirms her suspicion. 'They don't know what happened outside. They were on this ship when it happened. The gang members hijacked this ship and locked them up on the day it happened. They haven't left here ever since.'
Anna is shocked, and she looks at Sid for confirmation. Sid agrees.
'Why didn't you tell them anything?'
'This place is already too gloomy as it is. They needed something to hope for. If you could live for six months without knowing what happened, wouldn't you?' he concludes.
'They have been suffering here for that long? We have to let them go,' Anna sympathises.
'Even at that, we can't let these people go. They will just get in the way of our escape plan,' Sid refutes.
Anna gets angry hearing Sid's objection, 'Heartless as ever and always thinking about yourself. How many times did you pass by these people and do nothing? It doesn't even bother you seeing them suffer?' Anna berates Sid.
Sid gets pissed and waves Anna off.
'Alright, forget it! Do whatever you like! And don't blame me when you get caught!'
Quin, thinking about the situation rationally, comments, 'Freeing them might be to our advantage. With so many escapees running around the place, it would make it less likely for the gang members to catch up.'
That is all the confirmation Anna needs.
She walks over to the dishevelled looking blonde woman who was sitting beside quin and puts the keys in her hands.
'Pass the keys around when you're done.'
This woman, for some reason she looks familiar.
Once the woman gets the keys, all the other prisoners start struggling to go next.
'Let's leave here quickly before the ruckus attracts people,' Zane instructs.
They make their way towards the dark hallway again when they hear footsteps coming down the stairs.
A guy comes down while clapping his hands, the sound echoing throughout the empty hall.
'Never would I have thought you would get up to something like this. You did well to make it this far.'
His face is finally visible.
To Anna and Zane, it draws anger. To Sid, it draws a mix of anger and resentment.
It's the leader of the group that kidnapped them.
'Game's up, neighbour. No more running.'
