Back in Catherina's room, Quin finally regains his composure.
Now is my chance. I have to look for the boat key while she is out.
But...
He glances over at Rod, who is just standing at the door doing nothing.
What is her deal? Is she going to rat me out to Catherina?
After staring at her for a while, she doesn't react, and he decides to ignore her.
Forget it. She couldn't do anything to stop me if I left before Catherina came back.
He gets up from the bed and puts the gun in his waistband. Rod sees this but doesn't say anything.
Where do I begin?
Quin questions himself, staring at the wide expanse of Catherina's room.
He walks over to her cabinet and begins combing through it. Nothing there. He does find another magazine for the gun, which he pockets.
Even after combing through it several times, he doesn't find the key. When he moves to the wardrobes and drawers, there is no luck either.
Feeling like his search is pointless, he decides to ask Rod a question.
'What does it look like when Catherina goes out boating?'
Not expecting an answer, he is about to go back to searching when she answers.
'She normally wears her big jackets and carries her assault rifles to shoot at the sea. She normally only goes out for joy rides.'
Quin is less surprised by the answer and more surprised by the fact that she answered.
'Assault rifles? Where does she keep those?' he blurts out in response.
'Those are in the custody of the boss's attendant, Lady Yumel,' Rod responds.
Quin sighs in disappointment and is about to go back to searching when he realizes what she just said.
Jackets. I never thought to search inside clothes.
He rushes back over to the wardrobes and begins searching their pockets for the keys. Finally, he finds them in a pair of trousers.
The noise that was coming from downstairs suddenly stops.
Then—
BANG
Quin can hear a faint sound that seems to be a gunshot echoing from downstairs.
What in the world could be going on down there?
BANG
BANG
It doesn't stop at one, and even more begin to ring out.
Quin, who was about to leave, then begins questioning the validity of leaving right at that moment.
But as the sound of gunshots continues, he begins to worry about Anna's safety.
I can't stay here. That could be Anna in trouble, and even if it isn't, it can't be safe to remain here any longer.
I have to make my way to the escape boats, and quick.
But it's not like I can leave through the front door.
He scans the room for a bit before his eyes land upon the open window.
Quin questions Rod again.
'Which direction is the boat dock from here?'
'Left,' she says, pointing in a direction beside the window.
Perfect, Quin thinks to himself.
He goes over to the window to see if he can exit from it. It's a sloped way down, so he can.
He places one leg out of the window, preparing to slide out, when Rod, finally taking the initiative to speak, stops him by asking,
'Are you leaving, sir?'
Is she planning on ratting me out?
She continues, 'Why would you, when Lady Catherina treats you so well?'
'What do you mean, treats me well? I'm her hostage. There is nothing good about that,' he refutes her earlier statement with a hint of annoyance, still facing out the window.
'But she let you in her room, you can ask her for all the food you want, and you even get to lay down on her bed.'
Hearing these things, Quin turns around to really look at the girl.
What he sees is a child who has never known the warmth of a genuine relationship, a clueless child whose fate has placed her in horrendous circumstances.
Looking at her clearly, Quin's heart wavers.
'I'm not staying... but would you like to follow me? And escape from this place?
Where we are going may not be the safest place, or the warmest place, but I promise I will take care of you. And if there isn't enough to eat like there is some of the time, I'll give you food from my portion to eat.
Nobody is going to abuse you or force you to do things you don't want to do, and the people there won't do such terrible things.'
She looks at him in confusion.
'Why would you do that for me?'
Quin squeezes his hand before saying,
'Because every child deserves to know what it feels like to be loved.'
Hearing those words from Quin, Rod happens to remember someone telling her the exact same thing. And that smothers any consideration she would have had.
'I'm not coming,' she states firmly.
'But why not?' Quin protests.
'Because Lady Catherina is good to me,' she states.
Quin is about to push even further when he hears knocks on the door.
KNOCK KNOCK
'Is anyone in there?' a voice echoes from outside.
'Hey, open up. I was sent to retrieve something by Catherina.'
The two remain silent, heeding Catherina's warning not to open the door for anyone.
A second voice echoes out.
'Did you really think that was going to work? Step aside. Let me burst down this door.'
The people outside begin preparing to break down the door, and that puts Quin in an even more urgent situation.
He looks Rod in the eyes one more time, and seeing that she is resolved to stay, decides to leave by himself.
He exits the window, sliding down it until he reaches a pathway on the lower level leading to the place where the party was taking place.
He lands shakily and starts making his way in the opposite direction of the party deck.
Back in Catherina's room, the gangsters are finally able to break down the door.
They see that there is only a little girl waiting for them inside.
'Oh, it's just a runt,' one states.
The other refutes what he is saying.
'The boss said we should bring everyone hiding to him. It doesn't matter if she is just a runt.'
He goes in to grab her when someone else walks into the room.
It's the woman who was intoxicated on the floor before.
'Don't worry,' she says, walking past the two men. 'I'll handle these ones. Catherina's orders.'
One guy is about to object when he is stopped by the other.
'Let's just leave it. We don't want to get on Catherina's bad side,' he says, convincing the other guy to let it go.
They both leave.
The pink-haired woman shuts the door after they leave.
'Always looking for someone to suck up to,' she mutters.
She looks around and notices that Quin isn't there.
'Where is the pretty boy?' she questions Rod.
'I don't know. He left a while ago,' Rod states, pointing at the door.
