Chapter 28 - Paper and Rocks

Catherina takes a glance at him away from what she is doing and notices what he is looking at.

'You can take anything you want,' she tells him.

Quin is stunned, realizing she saw him snooping around.

'No, I didn't mean to,' he stammers.

'They are useless now anyways,' she adds.

Confused by the comment, Quin's curiosity jumps out of his mouth before he can stop it.

'Why is that?' he questions.

He tenses up when he realizes what he did, but, to his surprise, she just continues the conversation like it's normal. Quin starts to get the feeling that he can relax around her.

She begins explaining her logic while preparing the drinks.

'The apocalypse has made all these things valueless.

You can have all the money and gold in the world that you could ever want now, and it would amount to nothing more than what it is: a pile of paper and a bunch of rocks.

'That just is what it has always been. People were just too blind to recognize it, along with many other things.

'But while this apocalypse was a curse to those who died, it was a blessing to the few who survived.

'Because it opened our eyes to the one thing that really matters.'

She turns to face Quin after delivering that last line.

She walks up to him with the concoction she just finished making, which contains who knows what.

She places one of her knees between his legs as she leans into him. Quin backs up a bit to get some space from her.

She downs the contents of her own glass in an instant, then gestures for Quin to do the same. He opens his mouth, and she pours the wine into it, some of it spilling onto his body in the process.

I hope this wasn't spiked, he worries to himself

She then pushes Quin onto the bed and stays over him.

She looks at him seductively and then continues her statement.

'People. What mattered the most has always been people.

It was people who gave value to those papers and stones .

I'm really curious Quin, I want to know.

'So show me.'

She leans in closer and begins caressing his chest.

'Show me what kind of person you are.'

I knew something like this would happen when I decided to come here, but now that it's happening, I feel really unprepared.

Quin closes his eyes to accept whatever is coming.

She unbuttons his shirt and begins kissing his chest. She makes her way up his neck, and right when she is about to kiss his mouth, he turns away.

She stops what she is doing and looks up at him.

'What's wrong?'

'I'm sorry,' Quin replies calmly.

He looks her in the eyes, and his voice suddenly has more resolve in it.

'I'm sorry, but I can't do this.'

'Do you want me to call more girls in?', she questions confused about his sudden hesitation.

'No that's not it, it's just that this is something special to me'

Catherina still confused waits for him to get to the point.

'And there is already someone in my heart. This just wouldn't be right.'

She remains on top of him processing what he just said and her gaze causes him to look away.

He strengthens his resolve before looking back at her and continuing,

'You said you wanted to know the kind of person I am, right? Well, honestly, I don't even know myself.

'But there is one thing I am very sure of: my love. And I'm not going to betray it.'

Catherina backs away from his face and sits on his crotch after hearing this.

'I see,' she comments. 'This was my fault.'

Quin breathes a sigh of relief, thinking that the matter is settled.

Catherina's voice drops to a cold, almost creepy tone as she continues.

'I had assumed you had lost everything, all by yourself and lonely, just like me.

Because that is how every other survivor of this disaster is.

'I wanted to be the one who warmed your lonely heart. Seems I was mistaken again.'

She puts her hand around his neck firmly, but not enough to choke him.

'Tell me, who is she? Who is the woman who dared to take your heart?'

She is insane.

Quin's mind races in panic, and a moment of silence passes as he refuses to answer her.

Catherina gets off him, takes off her robe, exposing her body covered in tattoos, then begins to dress in normal clothes.

'Do you have more allies in a base somewhere else?

'Or was she the one who arrived here with you?'

She notices Quin flinch after her last statement.

'So it is her. I'm disappointed. Thought you had better taste.'

Quin immediately perks up.

'What are you going to do to her?' he blurts confirming her suspicions

She looks at him with the cold, unshaking gaze of a person who has taken countless lives before.

'I'm going to kill her, of course.'

She is not joking.

Quin can tell from the look in her eyes.

I should have just been quiet. Now I've put Anna in danger.

I can't let anything bad happen to her.

Catherina walks over to her drawer and brings out a golden revolver, then begins preparing it.

When her back is turned, Quin's eyes land on the gun she threw on the bed earlier.

The gun!

He reaches out his hand to grab it but tenses up from fear and the reality of taking someone's life.

I've got no other choice. I have to do it.

He resolves himself and grabs the gun.

In that moment, Catherina turns around, but he is quick to sit on the gun, and she doesn't notice anything.

She walks back to him and strokes his face with the golden gun.

'Don't worry. I will make it painless, and I will not shame her any more than I have to.'

Hearing that, Quin makes up his mind.

I'm going to kill her.

Catherina leaves him and begins heading to the door.

As her back is turned, Quin pulls out the gun and aims it at her head.

She reaches for the door handle, and he reaches for the trigger.

Right then, a knock interrupts the both of them, and Quin hides the gun again.

Catherina's anger flares up on her face.

'Who is it this time?!'

'It's Rod,' her voice comes bluntly from the other side.

Catherina angrily flings open the door and then grabs Rod by the neck of her shirt, pointing the gun at her forehead.

'You don't value your life, do you, brat?

'Why did you come here?'

Rod, still with the indifferent expression on her face, points in the direction of the stairs.

'There is a commotion downstairs. The boss is really angry.

'Someone wrecked his entire collection.'

Catherina's eyes widen in shock at the gravity of the situation.

'Are you sure about that? Don't play with me, brat.'

'Yes. Everyone is in a panic and gathered downstairs,' she replies bluntly.

Catherina drops Rod and scratches her forehead with the gun hand in stress.

'Shit. Who went and fucked up now? Lots of heads are going to be rolling today.'

She looks back into the room at Quin on the bed.

'Stay here, and even if someone knocks, don't open the door no matter what.'

She turns around to Rod.

'You as well.'

She puts the gun in her waistband and begins heading downstairs while cussing under her breath.

'Shit, shit, shit. Why did someone go have and fuck with the boss now?'

Rod enters the room and shuts the door, then proceeds to stand there, staring at Quin blankly.

Quin, oblivious to the implications of what is happening, meets her gaze with a perplexed expression.

What the fuck is going on?
