Chapter 16 - Betrayal 2

Jason lay motionless on the canvas.

The referee raised Aaron's hand high in the air.

"WINNER — AARON STALE!"

(ROOOAAR—!)

The crowd exploded.

"AARON! AARON! AARON!"

Hands lifted Aaron onto shoulders.

Cameras flashed. Classmates screamed his name. Sanctuary City had found its youngest champion ever.

Erika was there too—clapping, smiling, swept away by the moment.

Aaron looked down at Jason's unconscious body, a crooked smile forming.

"This is what happens when you fight me," he muttered.

"The fame. The trophy. The love you wanted—

it's all mine now."

Medical Room

Jason's father pushed through the chaos, his voice trembling.

"Jason—Jason! Wake up, son!"

No response.

Doctors rushed in. Jason was lifted and carried away as the crowd continued celebrating outside.

A nurse checked his vitals.

"He's unconscious," she said calmly. "He should wake up soon."

Suddenly, she froze.

A strange, clear fluid leaked from the corner of Jason's mouth.

The nurse frowned.

"I've… never seen this before."

Jason's father's heart skipped.

"What is it?"

"I can't be sure," she said slowly.

"But it looks like some kind of drug reaction."

The words hit him like a punch.

"Drugged…?" he whispered.

"But he didn't eat anything. He didn't drink anything…"

His fists clenched.

Back in the Ring

The judges handed Aaron the medal. The prize money. The cameras loved him.

Aaron raised the mic.

"Thank you, Sanctuary City!"

"But there's someone special I want to talk to."

He pointed straight at Erika.

A hush fell over the crowd.

"Erika… will you be my girlfriend?"

(WOOOAH!)

Erika froze.

Jason's warning echoed faintly in her mind—but the crowd, her friends, the pressure, the moment—

"Say yes!"

"Come on, Erika!"

Aaron stepped closer.

"You don't need to be afraid of anyone."

Her heart pounded.

"…Yes," she said softly.

The crowd ERUPTED.

Aaron pulled her into a hug as flashes blinded them.

Jason saw none of it.

(Jason Wakes Up)

Jason's eyes fluttered open.

His head felt heavy. His body burned.

"Father…?" he whispered.

His father rushed to his side, forcing a smile.

"You're awake. Thank God."

Jason swallowed.

"What… happened to the match?"

His father hesitated.

"You collapsed… before landing the final punch."

Jason turned his face away. Tears slid down silently.

"So… I lost."

"It's okay to lose," his father said gently.

"We'll try again."

Jason clenched his fists.

"What about our dream?"

"The youngest champion… I couldn't even do that."

His voice broke.

"Mom left because of me.

And now this… I can't even make you proud."

His father hugged him tightly.

"This wasn't your fault," he said.

"Sometimes life takes before it gives."

A pause.

"let's go home. We're having your favorite dessert tonight."

Jason wiped his face.

"You go ahead. I'll come later. I just… need to be alone."

His father studied him for a moment, worried.

"…Okay. But don't be late.

We'll be waiting."

The door closed.

An hour later, Jason left through the back door.

The city felt colder.

Footsteps echoed.

(tap… tap…)

A sound ahead.

A voice—familiar.

"Mm—Aaron, stop—"

Jason turned the corner.

And froze.

Aaron had Erika pinned against the wall, kissing her forcefully.

Jason didn't know.

Didn't know about the proposal.

Didn't know she'd said yes.

To him—

She was being assaulted.

Rage flooded his veins.

Jason lunged.

CRACK!

His fist smashed into Aaron's face, sending him flying several feet.

Erika screamed.

"Jason—what are you doing here?!"

Jason stood shaking.

"He won't touch you again," he said coldly.

"I'll break every bone in his body."

Aaron groaned, blood spilling from his mouth.

"You… psycho," he spat.

"You lost to me and now you want revenge?"

Jason charged again.

Punch after punch.

THUD! CRACK! THUD!

Blood splattered the ground.

Erika tried to pull Jason back.

"Stop! Jason, stop!"

He didn't hear her.

"How dare you hurt someone important to me!"

(WEE-OOO! WEE-OOO!)

Police sirens.

Officers rushed in, dragging Jason away as Aaron lay unconscious.

Jason didn't resist.

(Court)

Three days later.

"Jason Schizor," the judge said,

"you are accused of attempted murder. Is that true?"

Jason remained silent.

His lawyer stepped forward.

"My client is traumatized. We request testimony from the witness—Erika."

Erika stepped into the courtroom.

Jason looked up and smiled faintly.

She would tell the truth.

She had to.

"What happened that night?" the lawyer asked.

Erika swallowed.

"Aaron was dropping me home…

Jason appeared suddenly and attacked him in anger over losing the match."

Jason's smile faded. Why you are lying Erika?

His heart stopped.

"Is that the truth?" the judge asked Jason.

Jason stared at the floor. He couldn't withstand what he had just heard.

Silence.

"Guilty," the judge ruled.

"One year in juvenile detention."

Aaron smiled through his bandages,"I know you love me and will take my side Erika".
