Chapter 18 - Crossroads

Conrad looked at Tom.

His eyes were filled with anger.

"How could you never tell me this?"

Tom looked just as confused.

"Because..."

"I didn't know myself."

"I swear to you."

"I've always been faithful to you."

"I don't know anything about Upware."

"But Conrad couldn't bring himself to believe it.

After everything he had been through...

After losing his family...

His mind began connecting things that weren't even there.

"If you're really from a place like Upware..."

"What if..."

"What if you had something to do with my family's murder?"

Tom's eyes widened.

"What?"

"No."

"For me..."

"In this whole world..."

"You're all I've got."

"I don't care about Upware."

"I care about you."

"My friend."

Conrad, blinded by rage and grief, lashed out.

Tom never fought back.

He simply endured it.

Again and again, he kept saying,

"You have to believe me, Conrad."

"I would never betray you."

But Conrad wasn't listening.

All he could see was the memory of his family.

In his mind...

He imagined Tom standing beside the people who butchered them.

That single thought destroyed every bit of trust he had left.

Finally, Conrad stepped back.

His voice was cold.

"Leave."

"Leave this town."

"And never come near me again."

"If I ever see you again..."

"I'll kill you."

Tom slowly got back onto his feet.

He wiped the blood from his lips and smiled sadly.

"Buddy..."

"If I die now..."

"Then how are we supposed to avenge our families?"

"I think that would be pretty stupid."

"So..."

"I'll leave."

"And I'll prove my loyalty."

"By killing those bastards."

Conrad laughed bitterly.

"You're really a traitor."

"And a damn good actor."

"Now get the fuck out of my sight."

Tom looked toward Steve.

"Steve..."

"Use Henry's mechanism."

"Move me out of Bulltown."

Although the mission had succeeded...

It had also failed.

Steve quietly activated Henry's mechanism.

The underground plates shifted.

And Tom was transported to the edge of Bulltown.

(You might wonder why they couldn't simply escape Redware the same way.

The answer was simple.

Bulltown was only one district.

Outside of it were Chinatown, Lovetown, and Bloodtown.

Places far more dangerous and ruthless.

Even if someone escaped Bulltown...

They would simply be hunted in the next district.)

Tom stood at the edge of Bulltown.

He turned around one last time.

For a brief moment...

He saw two familiar figures.

Thomas.

And Henry.

Both smiling.

Both waving goodbye.

Henry spoke first.

"Don't worry about Conrad."

"He'll find you again."

"Right now..."

"Just become stronger."

"And avenge your parents."

Tom's eyes filled with tears.

He smiled.

"Look after Conrad for me..."

"Will you?"

Without looking back again...

He walked toward...

Chinatown.

Back in Bulltown...

Neither Steve nor Conrad spoke.

Steve remained silent.

Conrad...

Could only cry.

After several minutes, Conrad finally broke the silence.

"Steve..."

"Did I make the right decision?"

"I know he never wanted to hurt me."

"But..."

"What if he was planning something against me all along?"

His mind drifted back to the very first day they met.

Conrad was sitting on the veranda of his mansion.

The gardener walked over with a young boy beside him.

The little boy smiled.

"Will you be my friend?"

Conrad became shy.

But he nodded.

"Okay..."

Then he looked at Tom and asked,

"Do you have a sister?"

(Tom looked pretty cute back then.)

For the first time in years...

Conrad smiled.

Then reality returned.

He wiped away his tears.

"Maybe..."

"It's better that I found out now."

"If something really was wrong..."

"It would've hurt even more later."

He stood up.

Looked at Steve.

And revealed his biggest plan yet.

"Tell me something."

"This 3112 Bulls Raid..."

"What's so special about it?"

Steve scratched his head.

"I honestly don't know."

"I've never figured out what 3112 means."

Conrad smiled.

"I don't really care."

"What matters..."

"Is that there'll be one hundred Bulls."

"And nine people thrown into that arena."

Steve looked confused.

"How does that help you?"

Conrad's smile grew wider.

"It helps me..."

"Because..."

"I'll be the tenth."

The room fell silent.

The biggest raid in Bulltown's history...

Had just found its tenth fighter.
