Something has shifted in Krystal tonight. It's subtle, like the first crack in winter ice, but I can sense it. Trust might be too strong a word, but there's a softening around the edges of her defenses. I'll take whatever progress I can get.
The trauma she carries runs deep. Whatever happened during her childhood left scars that shaped how she sees the world. Somewhere in her past, she learned that Alphas were dangerous. Maybe it was mates specifically she decided couldn't be trusted. After all, she did mention that poisoned meal was intended for whatever mate she might find.
My thumb traces gentle circles across her knuckles. Her hand remains nestled in mine, and she hasn't pulled away. This simple contact sends warmth flooding through my chest. When she finally accepts our bond completely, the intensity might just destroy us both.
