Chapter 5 - Chapter 5 — Go Fish Out Her Corpse

Lu Shiyan refused to believe that something had happened to me.

He slammed the car door shut and dialed my number again.

The automated voice reminded him that the phone had been turned off.

He opened WeChat.

The pinned contact at the top of his list caught my eye—it was my sister, Su Ning'an.

He had even added a little heart emoji beside her name.

For years, that pinned chat had always been mine.

Two years ago, I found out he had changed it—to her.

Back then, the man who used to call me "annoying" with irritation

had started calling her "An'an" with tenderness.

When I asked about it, guilt flickered in his eyes,

but he made up excuses, saying I was petty, jealous, unreasonable.

Ever since Su Ning'an returned to the Su family three years ago,

she had made it her mission to destroy me—

and under her perfect, innocent act,

my parents and brother all turned against me,

seeing me only as the cruel, jealous sister.

I thought Lu Shiyan was different.

We grew up together—he knew who I truly was.

But somewhere along the way, he changed too.

The way he looked at me became just like everyone else's—

cold, judging, filled with quiet disgust.

Maybe I should have seen it coming.

Lu Shiyan had already left me behind long before I realized it.

Only I was foolish enough to keep clinging to the past.

His fingers swiped quickly through WeChat,

scrolling past countless messages from relatives and friends

who had come to console him after he abandoned our wedding.

Finally, he found my profile.

He clicked it open.

Inside, there was only my location—and the last message I would ever send him.

Su Wan: Lu Shiyan, we need to talk.

He stared at it blankly for a long time.

Then, he pressed the voice message button.

"Su Wan, where are you?

I told you to stop playing these games. We're already married!

Why can't you leave An'an alone?

Do you know how upset she was last night?

If you come back right now, I'll forget everything that happened yesterday."

After sending the messages, he tossed his phone aside.

His assistant, watching him through the rearview mirror,

noticed the exhaustion on his face, tinged faintly with worry.

"Mr. Lu," the assistant ventured carefully,

"Madam has always been a composed person.

Even when you left her at the wedding yesterday, she didn't lose her temper.

I don't think she'd play such a reckless prank,

especially one that alarms the police.

Perhaps… we should look for her?"

"You seem to know her well?" Lu Shiyan's voice was sharp.

"No, Mr. Lu," the assistant said softly, "I just think Madam is… pitiful."

"Pitiful?" He gave a cold laugh.

"She's always been good at pretending—acting sweet and fragile to get attention.

Fine, if you've got nothing better to do,

go to Binjiang and see if you can fish her corpse out of the river."

When someone starts to hate you,

never ask why.

Every reason you can think of is probably right.

I had long known this day would come.

From the moment his conversations began revolving around Su Ning'an—

seven out of ten sentences mentioning her name—

I knew.

He remembered her favorite foods, her little habits.

Whenever he traveled for business,

he brought her gifts—just like he did for me.

Six months ago, Lu Shiyan went abroad for a project inspection.

An earthquake hit, mountains collapsed.

I booked the earliest flight to reach him—

but Su Ning'an had hidden my passport and visa.

I couldn't leave the country.

She took my place, boarding the plane to him that very night.

I risked everything—crossed the Pacific illegally.

A tsunami hit. If not for a stranger's help,

I would've died at sea.

When I finally made it back alive,

she accused me of "sneaking off for a seaside vacation."

I tried to explain about the passport—

but she opened the drawer in front of everyone,

revealing my documents right where they were supposed to be.

No one believed me.

Lu Shiyan said cruel things that day—

and I decided it was over.

"Lu Shiyan, let's call off the engagement."

He frowned, displeased. "Are you kidding me?"

"I'm not," I said calmly.

"I've done my best in this relationship.

I don't want us to go from loving each other

to becoming strangers filled with hate.

Let's stop before we reach that point."

He saw the seriousness in my eyes and panicked.

From that day, he swore to change—

he drew a clear line with Su Ning'an,

showered me with gifts,

planned an elaborate proposal,

and began arranging our wedding.

I thought I was finally going to be happy.

Three months ago, after one drunken night,

I became pregnant with his child.

I wanted to tell him the good news—

but before I could, Su Ning'an pushed herself down the stairs.

Lu Shiyan rushed over in fury,

scooped her up in his arms.

When I tried to explain, he shoved me away without hesitation.

That's when I finally understood—

our happiness had been an illusion,

a fragile mirror that shattered at the first touch.

In his heart, he had only ever believed her.

I hit the ground hard, pain blooming in my abdomen.

The doctor said my pregnancy was unstable.

I spent days in the hospital, trying desperately to save my child.

His assistant mentioned he was busy with a major project.

Even knowing I was hospitalized, he didn't come once.

I stopped caring.

The only thing that mattered to me was the baby.

I wanted—needed—to bring this little life into the world safely.

But I didn't expect that the one who would come visit me

was Su Ning'an.

She stood by my hospital bed,

her voice soft and smug as she described

how Lu Shiyan held her, kissed her, touched her…

My stomach twisted violently.

Something warm and wet spread beneath me.

I reached for the call button, but my hand was too weak.

Panicked, I tried to get out of bed.

Even if I had to crawl,

I had to save my baby.

Then I saw the blood—bright and endless—soaking the sheets.

Pain tore through me.

Step by step, I stumbled toward the door.

Blood trailed down my legs, a crimson path across the floor.

I didn't care.

All I could think was—

my baby… my baby…

Darkness swallowed me.

And I fell.
