Chapter 16 - Pressure and Stop

The underground chamber stayed quiet for almost three hours.

Sekai sat with his back against the cool stone wall and watched the golden light surrounding Alicia. The glow never flickered. Her breathing never changed. She remained locked in the same kneeling position, every sense suspended, pouring her power into the barrier that held the Realm of Darkness at bay.

Prince Will paced in short, tight lines near the entrance. Clau kept her Lightning Sword close. Yelda checked the edges of the magic circle every few minutes, testing the strength of the holy field with careful probes of her own magic. Leafa stood near the doorway like a silent guard. Niña dozed against a pillar with one eye half open. Fury sat beside Sekai and said nothing, but her attention never fully left him.

The first warning came as a low vibration in the stone.

Yelda's head snapped up. "Something is pressing against the barrier from the outside. Harder than before."

Prince Will moved to the crystal scrying basin set into the wall. The water inside darkened, then cleared to show the eastern edge of the capital. A thick mass of living shadow had gathered against the holy field. Darklings larger than any they had faced in the labyrinth clawed at the glowing wall of light. Behind them, something taller and denser moved like a living siege tower of pure darkness.

Clau's grip tightened on her sword. "They are trying to break through before the ritual finishes."

Sekai stood. The timer in the corner of his vision showed seven hours and twelve minutes.

"I will go," he said.

Leafa stepped into his path. "Not alone."

He did not argue. The five of them left the chamber together and climbed back to the surface. The streets of the capital were already filling with soldiers moving toward the eastern wall. Civilians who had only recently returned to their homes were being urged to safer districts farther west.

The eastern barrier shimmered like heat haze under a clear sky. On the far side, the Realm of Darkness pressed close. The massive shape at the center of the assault finally resolved itself into something almost humanoid, taller than the vessel they had destroyed beneath Mount Cape. Its body looked forged from compressed night, and a cluster of glowing red cores burned in its chest like a constellation of angry stars.

Fury's voice stayed low. "That is no failed experiment. That is a true servant of the King. A Darkness General."

The general raised one enormous arm. Black energy gathered at its tip and slammed into the holy field. The barrier flared bright gold, then dimmed. Cracks of pure darkness spiderwebbed across its surface for a heartbeat before the light sealed them again.

Sekai already had the controller in his hand.

He pressed the pause button.

The world locked in place. Soldiers froze mid-run. The Darkness General hung motionless with its arm still raised. The cracks in the barrier stopped spreading.

Sekai walked through the frozen chaos and studied the general from every angle. The cluster of cores was protected by the same dense swirling shadow they had seen before, only thicker and more layered. Cutting through it with ordinary weapons would take too long once time resumed. The barrier itself was already under heavy strain. If the general landed two more solid blows, the field might collapse.

He needed to end the fight in a single moment.

He returned to the frozen party, took Leafa's sword once more, and spent a careful stretch of stopped time carving a precise path through the general's outer defenses. Layer by layer he opened a tunnel of clear space that led straight to the central cluster of cores. When the path was ready, he positioned himself at the entrance of that tunnel, sword raised, and released time.

The world snapped back into motion.

The Darkness General's arm continued its downward swing. The barrier flared under the impact. At the same instant Sekai stepped into the tunnel he had prepared and drove the holy-edged blade through every core in rapid succession.

The general's roar shook the eastern wall. Its massive body convulsed. Darkness poured from the ruined cores in thick rivers. The remaining darklings staggered as the commanding presence above them collapsed. Within moments the entire assault force began to break apart, retreating into the deeper black of the Realm of Darkness.

The barrier held.

Soldiers stared in stunned silence as the last of the shadow army withdrew. Sekai returned Leafa's sword without ceremony. She accepted it slowly, eyes fixed on him with an expression that mixed exhaustion and reluctant understanding.

Fury stepped up beside him. "You are burning through whatever time you have left."

He checked the timer.

Six hours and forty-one minutes.

"I know," he said.

They returned to the underground chamber. Alicia still knelt in the same pool of golden light, untouched by the battle that had nearly reached her. Prince Will looked from the scrying basin to Sekai and gave a single grateful nod.

"The barrier is stable again. For now."

Sekai sat back down against the wall and closed his eyes for a moment. The weight of the controller felt heavier than usual in his pocket.

Six hours.

The King of Darkness had tested them twice in a short span. There would be a third attempt. There always was.

He kept his thumb near the pause button and waited for the next pressure to arrive.
