The hours after the timer reset passed quietly.
Soldiers rotated along the walls in longer shifts. The eastern district still showed scars from the last assault, but the holy barrier now stood farther out than it had since the ritual began. Black clouds of the Realm of Darkness hung at a greater distance, no longer pressing directly against the golden field.
Inside the underground chamber the golden light around Alicia had settled into a deeper, steadier radiance. The first major threshold of the hundred days had passed. Her body remained suspended in prayer, senses locked away, but the strain on the magic circle had eased.
Prince Will ordered food and clean water brought down. Everyone ate in near silence at first. The weight of the previous day still sat on their shoulders.
Niña broke the quiet first. "I am going to sleep for a week when this is over."
Leafa cleaned her sword with slow, methodical strokes. "We are not over anything yet. The King of Darkness lost a strong force and still failed to break the ritual. He will not accept that quietly."
Fury sat with her back against the wall, eyes half closed. "He has other pieces in motion. The vessel beneath Mount Cape and the generals at the wall were only the ones we could see."
Sekai listened while he ate. The new timer sat comfortably at just under three full days. For the first time since the voyage back from Mount Cape he felt like he could breathe without counting every minute.
Clau approached him once the others had begun to rest in turns. She still had trouble holding his gaze for long, but her voice was steady.
"You saved the barrier twice in one day," she said. "The capital would have fallen without you."
Sekai gave a small shrug. "I only moved people and things into the right places. All of you did the real fighting."
She shook her head once. "That is not how the soldiers on the wall are telling the story."
She left it there and returned to her post near Alicia.
Later, when most of the chamber had grown quiet, Fury opened her eyes and looked at Sekai.
"You used the pause more times today than I have seen since we first met," she said. "Even with the reset, that kind of strain leaves marks."
"I will recover," he answered.
She studied him for a long moment. "Elves live long enough to recognize when someone is carrying more than they admit. Whatever that controller truly is, it is not free."
Sekai did not argue. He simply rested his head back against the stone and let the soft hum of the golden light fill the silence.
Near midnight a messenger arrived with a sealed report from the League of Mages. Prince Will broke the seal and read it twice before speaking.
"There is movement in the far north. A second pocket of the Realm of Darkness has begun to expand near the old fortress of Highmere. It is smaller than the one pressing the capital, but it is growing faster. The League believes the King of Darkness is trying to open a second front while our strongest forces are tied here."
Leafa straightened. "If Highmere falls, the northern trade roads die with it. The capital will be cut off from half its supplies."
Fury's ears angled forward. "Highmere sits on an old elven nexus. If the darkness takes that ground, it will be much harder to push back later."
Sekai checked the fresh timer out of habit. Two days and fourteen hours remained. Enough time to reach Highmere if they moved without delay, but only if they left soon.
Prince Will looked at him. "The League asks specifically for the Hero of Salvation. They believe your presence can stop the northern expansion before it becomes another permanent scar on the map."
Sekai glanced at Alicia's still form. The ritual still had most of its hundred days left. Leaving her side again carried risk. Staying while a second front opened carried a different kind of risk.
He stood.
"We leave at first light," he said. "Clau and Yelda stay here with the prince and the remaining guards. The rest of us go north."
Leafa gave a single nod. "Agreed."
Niña stretched and groaned. "I just got used to not being on a boat or a mountain. Now we are running again."
Fury rose smoothly. "The darkness does not rest. Neither can we."
Sekai looked once more at the golden light surrounding the princess. Three new days. A second front already opening. The King of Darkness was spreading his reach in every direction he could.
At dawn they would ride for Highmere.
And once again, time would have to be bent to keep the world from breaking.
