Chapter 22 - Northward and Stop

They left the capital at first light with a small escort of fast horses and two League mages who knew the northern roads.

The journey to Highmere normally took four full days of hard riding. Sekai had two days and eleven hours on the timer when they passed through the northern gate. He did not waste the margin.

Once the city walls fell behind them and the road opened into rolling farmland, he began using the pause button in careful stretches. While the others rode in ordinary time he would freeze the world, study the map, adjust their formation for better speed, and clear small obstacles from the path ahead. Fallen trees, washed-out sections of road, even a pair of bandits who had set a clumsy ambush near a river crossing all vanished from the problem list before the party ever reached them.

By the end of the first real day they had covered nearly the distance of two normal days of travel. The horses were tired but not broken. The League mages kept exchanging quiet looks every time the landscape seemed to shift in their favor without explanation.

Leafa rode at the front with her usual silence. Every so often she glanced back at Sekai as if measuring how much of the impossible speed came from him alone.

Fury kept pace beside him for long stretches. "You are spending the new days quickly," she said during one of the brief rests.

"I would rather spend them on the road than spend them watching another town fall," he answered.

Niña stretched in the saddle and groaned. "My legs are going to fall off before we even see this fortress."

One of the League mages, a thin man named Orlen, cleared his throat. "Highmere was once a stronghold of the old northern kingdoms. After the last great war it became a trading hub. If the darkness takes it, the northern supply lines collapse. The capital will feel the shortage within weeks."

The second mage, a woman called Sera, added, "Scouts reported the black clouds appeared three days ago. They have already swallowed two smaller villages. The fortress itself still holds, but the outer farms are gone."

Sekai checked the timer. One day and nineteen hours remained. They would reach Highmere by the following afternoon if the pace held.

That night they made a cold camp in a stand of trees well off the main road. No fire. Watches rotated every two hours. Sekai took the last watch before dawn and used the quiet to pause the world for a longer stretch, simply sitting in the frozen silence while the others slept. The controller rested in his hand. The new three days still felt fresh, but he could already feel the weight of another hard fight waiting ahead.

They rode out again at first light.

By midday the sky ahead had begun to change. The clear blue of the northern plains slowly gave way to a low band of black clouds that sat unnaturally still on the horizon. The air grew colder. Birds no longer flew in that direction.

Highmere came into view in the late afternoon.

The fortress stood on a low rise overlooking the main northern road. Its walls were thick gray stone reinforced with old elven wards that still glowed faintly blue in places. Banners snapped in the wind above the gate towers. Outside those walls the land told a different story. Black fog hugged the ground in wide patches. Several outlying farms sat half-swallowed by the same motionless darkness they had seen near the capital. No smoke rose from any of the farmhouse chimneys.

A line of defenders waited on the walls. When the party approached the main gate a horn sounded and the heavy doors opened just wide enough to let them through.

The commander of Highmere was a broad woman named Captain Rena with a scarred cheek and tired eyes. She met them in the courtyard without ceremony.

"Hero of Salvation," she said. "We received word you were coming. I hope you are as effective as the stories claim. The darkness expands a little farther every night. Last night it took the eastern watchtower. We pulled the men out in time, but the tower itself is gone."

Fury looked toward the black fog beyond the walls. "The expansion is faster than the one that threatened the capital. This pocket is being fed deliberately."

Captain Rena nodded once. "Our mages say something under the old fortress is drawing the darkness in. There are sealed lower levels that date back to the elven era. We have never opened them. I am starting to think something down there has already opened itself."

Sekai felt the familiar weight of the controller in his pocket. One day and six hours remained.

"Show us the way to the lower levels," he said.

Captain Rena studied the small party for a moment, then turned and gestured for them to follow. "Stay close. The wards are still holding inside the fortress, but they grow thinner the deeper you go."

They crossed the courtyard and entered a side keep. Stone stairs led downward into colder air and older stone. Blue crystal veins appeared in the walls again, the same style they had seen beneath Mount Cape.

Leafa's hand rested on her sword. "This feels familiar."

Fury's voice was quiet. "Because it is. The old elf kings built more than one prison."

Sekai checked the timer one more time and kept walking.

Whatever waited in the sealed levels of Highmere had already begun to call the darkness to itself. They would reach it before the next night fell.

And once again the pause button would decide how much time the world was allowed to keep.
