They returned to the underground chamber with the weight of the recent battle still on their clothes and weapons. Residual shadow clung to boots and blade edges. The golden light around Alicia had thinned again after the strain of the last assault, but it still held.
Prince Will looked up from the scrying basin as they entered. Relief and exhaustion mixed on his face. "The eastern barrier is sealing. Reports say the darkness has pulled back farther than it has in days."
Clau rested her Lightning Sword against the wall and rolled her shoulders. "It will not stay back. He committed too much strength to simply walk away."
Sekai sat heavily on the stone bench near the circle. The timer in the corner of his vision read one hour and forty-one minutes. Every use of the pause button had bought them victories, but each one had also burned through the remaining time he had left in this world.
Fury sat beside him. "You are running out."
He did not pretend otherwise. "I know."
Niña leaned against a pillar and watched him. "What happens when that timer of yours hits zero? You never actually said."
Sekai was quiet for a moment. "I do not know for certain. The message that came with the controller only said that if the three days ended without clearing the stage, time would stop for me permanently. I have been treating every major victory like a stage clear. So far it has reset. This time I am not sure there is another reset coming."
Leafa stood near the doorway, arms crossed. "Then we make certain the capital survives the next hour. After that we can argue about what the timer means."
The chamber settled into a watchful silence. Guards rotated at the entrance. Yelda continued to monitor the edges of the magic circle. Alicia remained motionless in her prayer, face calm, body suspended between one breath and the next.
Forty minutes passed without a new attack.
Sekai used the time to rest in short, controlled stretches. He closed his eyes and let his body recover while keeping one hand near the controller. The timer dropped to fifty-eight minutes. Then forty-one. Then twenty-nine.
At the twenty-minute mark the scrying basin flared with sudden light.
Prince Will leaned over it and went still. "Something is forming directly above the capital. High in the sky. It is not darkness. It is the opposite."
Yelda moved to the basin and stared. "That is holy magic. Extremely pure. But it is unstable."
Fury's ears lifted. "Alicia's prayer is reaching its first major threshold. The barrier is about to expand."
The golden light around the princess brightened sharply. Cracks of radiance spread across the floor of the circle and climbed the walls. The entire chamber filled with a soft, rising hum.
Outside, the holy field that protected the capital began to push outward. The black clouds of the Realm of Darkness were forced back several hundred paces in a single slow surge. Soldiers on the walls shouted as the pressure against the barrier suddenly eased.
For a moment it felt like a turning point.
Then the counter-attack arrived.
A spear of absolute darkness dropped from the highest black clouds and struck the expanding holy field like a spike driven by a god. The golden light buckled. A shockwave rolled across the capital. Inside the chamber the magic circle shuddered. Alicia's body jerked once inside the light, the first movement she had made since the ritual began.
Sekai was already on his feet.
He pressed the pause button.
The world froze at the moment of impact. The spear of darkness hung motionless against the barrier. The shockwave stopped mid-expansion. Alicia remained locked in that single involuntary twitch.
Sekai walked to her side and studied the golden field. The spear had driven a deep fracture into the prayer itself. If time resumed without intervention, the fracture would split the entire ritual open and the barrier would collapse across the city.
He could not heal. He could not use holy magic. But he could still move what needed to be moved.
He spent a long stretch of stopped time carefully shifting the focus of the magic circle. He adjusted the position of every crystal marker around the edge. He repositioned Fury and Yelda so their combined light would strike the fracture the instant the world moved again. He placed Clau and Leafa at the points where secondary cracks were already forming. Then he stood directly in front of Alicia, one hand on the controller, and released the pause.
Light and darkness collided.
Fury and Yelda's combined radiance slammed into the fracture. Clau and Leafa cut through the secondary cracks the moment they tried to spread. The spear of darkness shattered against the reinforced field. The golden light around Alicia flared once, brighter than ever, and then settled into a steady, stronger glow.
The barrier above the capital held. More than held. It pushed the Realm of Darkness back another hundred paces before stabilizing.
Silence returned to the chamber.
Sekai checked the timer.
Four minutes remained.
He sat down hard on the stone floor. The others stared at him. No one spoke for several seconds.
Prince Will finally found his voice. "The barrier is stronger than it has been since the ritual began."
Fury looked at Sekai. "And you?"
He watched the numbers tick downward.
Three minutes.
Two.
One.
The final seconds fell away.
The timer reached zero.
For a heartbeat nothing happened. Then a soft chime sounded in Sekai's mind, the same sound he had heard after every major victory since arriving in this world. Fireworks of pure light burst across his vision. A familiar message appeared.
Stage Clear.
The timer reset.
New numbers settled into place.
Three days.
Sekai let out a long breath and leaned back against the wall. The controller felt lighter in his pocket than it had in hours.
Fury watched the tension leave his shoulders and gave a small, knowing nod. "You made it."
Niña grinned. "Does that mean we get to sleep now?"
Leafa sheathed her sword with a sharp click. "Sleep can wait until we are certain the King of Darkness has finished for the night."
Outside, the capital still stood. The barrier glowed stronger than before. Alicia continued her prayer without pause, the first major threshold of the hundred days successfully passed.
Sekai closed his eyes for a moment and allowed himself the first real rest he had felt since leaving Mount Cape.
Three new days.
The King of Darkness was still out there.
But for the first time in a long while, time was on their side again.
