Chapter 36 - Chapter 36 Constantine's Past & Call for Help

On the aircraft, Batman took the opportunity to try and extract some information.

"I heard you spent some time in Ravenscar Mental Asylum?"

"Are you serious? You're going to pry into my privacy at a time like this?"

Constantine's expression was displeased; this matter involved a past he preferred not to mention.

"Why not?" Batman didn't give up.

Moreover, when he investigated Constantine's past, he also discovered that the other party was involved in a tragic incident from that year—the "Newcastle Incident."

Constantine, reminded by Batman, also recalled that incident from back then, and his expression became somewhat dejected.

"I don't want to talk about this now, Batman. Can you please not push me?"

Batman remained silent for a moment before continuing:

"OK, I won't push you."

"But you must understand that if you want to get help from the Justice League moving forward, this is an issue you cannot avoid."

"The Justice League must ensure its power is not used for evil."

Constantine's face looked a bit unnatural, and he turned his head:

"I never said I needed your help."

"Then why did you involve me in this matter?"

Batman wasn't fooled by him. If he didn't need JLA's help, Constantine could have easily ditched him and gone solo.

But he didn't do that.

He actively appeared before Batman, which indicated that Constantine himself wasn't confident in resolving this matter, and thus hoped to leverage JLA's power.

But as Batman said, JLA is willing to help the innocent, but the premise is that it won't be exploited by evil people.

Batman hadn't spent much time with Constantine and couldn't determine the person's good or evil nature.

But he sensed from the "Newcastle Incident" that this matter must be related to him.

It's quite possible that Constantine was responsible for this incident.

Sometimes, whether a person's nature is good or bad isn't important; what matters is how he acts.

Constantine clearly had a talent for turning good intentions into bad outcomes.

Constantine, of course, could hear the distrust in Batman's tone towards him. He was a bit embarrassed, but he indeed harbored the intention of dragging the Justice League into this.

He had conversed with Batman once and knew about Shazam.

Shazam's deeds were renowned in the Magical Realm; even he, a rogue magician, had heard of the Guardian's reputation.

The Wizard Council, before only the Old Wizard remained, once ruled the Magical Realm, and the Guardian's reputation began to spread from that time.

He coveted Shazam's Rock of Eternity the most; it was a sacred place of magic, filled with priceless precious materials... In order to gain the Justice League's trust, Constantine reluctantly decided to recount the events of that year.

Batman's guess was not wrong; Constantine was indeed the main 'culprit' in the 'Newcastle Incident'.

At that time, he had just learned a bit of magic and tried to use this ability to help a little girl escape from a cult of evil magic that had imprisoned her.

The cult intended to sacrifice the girl to summon a demon.

Constantine, on the other hand, used his dark magic to summon a demon in advance.

Doesn't that sound preposterous?

This is because Constantine believed that only a demon could defeat a demon, so he used this method of fighting fire with fire.

Then, as expected, he caused a huge disaster.

Because he hadn't cast a binding spell on the demon at the time, the summoned demon went on a rampage at the Playboy nightclub.

Except for Constantine and his childhood friend Chas, no one at the scene survived.

Even the little girl they initially set out to save was ultimately dragged to hell by the demon.

That was the first time Constantine understood his powerlessness; he paid the price for his arrogance.

He understood for the first time that magic was a miracle that required a heavy price to perform.

The scattered dismembered bodies at that nightclub, and the little girl's screams before she fell into hell, were a nightmare that Constantine could never shake off.

Constantine, who had brutally laid bare his innermost secrets for Batman to see, finally calmed down.

He lit a cigarette for himself and took a deep drag.

"After that day, I also realized that scum like me might be naturally suited for dark magic or demons."

"So, when dealing with some tricky problems, I'm more willing to leverage their power. I understand your concerns, because I share them."

"If you aren't going to help me, it's hard to say I won't cause another huge mess using my own methods."

After hearing the story, Batman pondered for a moment, then pressed a button on the aircraft.

Constantine's unfinished cigarette was instantly sucked away by a fan-like device, disappearing to who knows where.

"No smoking here," Batman said.

Meanwhile, Dane, in the JLA Tower, received a request for help from Batman via Cortana.

"It seems our magic consultant has run into some trouble."

He opened the file Batman sent, read it for a while, and gained a general understanding.

This was the beginning of the plot for 'Constantine: City of Demons,' and Batman's abilities certainly couldn't handle it.

In the story, Los Angeles was targeted by demons who sought to turn it into part of hell.

This was also an attempt by the Hell dimension to extend its influence into the Real World.

However, six demons simultaneously wanted to become the agents of hell on Earth, leading to internal disputes among them.

The demon tormenting Constantine tried to use him to expel the other five competitors and monopolize Los Angeles.

Dane remembered that Constantine ultimately used a strategy of 'using a tiger to swallow a wolf.'

He summoned a primordial indigenous god to eliminate five demons, then expelled that god.

Finally, he used Chas and Renee's love for their child to kill the last demon.

This move of 'killing with a borrowed knife' and 'getting something for nothing' was truly impressive, but the ending wasn't so pleasant.

The final battle exhausted Renee and the child's love for Chas, causing the mother and daughter not to recognize the father.

Because this love was still not enough, Constantine also sacrificed his friendship with his childhood friend.

As a result, Chas also lost all memories of living with Constantine.

Well, that last part might actually be a good thing.

Dane stroked his chin. He remembered that in this movie, the Spirit of Los Angeles also appeared, which was a rare find.

He had never, until now, witnessed a City Spirit in any city.

With the cooperation of a City Spirit, there would be more room for maneuver in setting up magic.

In the movie, the Spirit of Los Angeles, being utterly helpless against the demons, even considered agreeing to let them set up a hell ritual in Los Angeles.

Dane had recently been eyeing Kahndaq. If he could establish contact with the Spirit of Kahndaq and reach an agreement with her...

This country would then be completely his in a magical sense.

He could even dominate the lives and souls of the Kahndaq people, becoming a true god with authority!

So, for both public and private reasons, Dane immediately agreed to Batman's request for help. He intended to personally go and meet that City Spirit.

This time, he didn't plan to use a portal, nor did he intend to fly there.

Unlike his previous opponents, most Greater Demons who dared to meddle with the human world knew a bit of dark magic, and his use of magic could easily be detected by them.

Moreover, if the Spirit of Los Angeles thought Dane could directly solve the problem and thus didn't appear, he would suffer a great loss.

"Cortana, prepare a plane for me."

"Okay, Dane."

With Umbrella's technological prowess and Vanguard Technology's money-making methods, his private jet was no worse than Hawkman's N Metal plane, he just usually didn't need to use it.

"Trouble?"

At this moment, Diana, dressed in casual clothes—the white dress she wore when she first appeared in 'BVS'—walked in, and Dane went to meet her.

"Aren't you supposed to be working today?"

Diana had not quit her museum job, so she still had to go to work as usual, except on holidays.

"I just got off work. I heard Cortana's report. Do you need my help?"

Although Diana was asking, she clearly looked eager.

A thought stirred in his mind: Diana, with her divine artifacts, was perfectly suited to fight demons!

"You understand the situation, right?"

She nodded, "Cortana told me. This time we're dealing with demons."

"That's right. This time I plan to wipe out their forces in the human world in one fell swoop."

"So, we can't alert them yet. We need to go as ordinary people."
