~~~ [START]
Water splashed upward as the jokers' boat moved first, overtaking the others in what seemed to be less than the split of a second.
"Excuse us, ladies!" Eric shouted, laughing as he looked behind him, noting how Bianca's squad was fuming with rage. "Paddle faster," he urged, fearing they would get closer.
The atmosphere became moist as boats repeatedly slammed themselves into the water.
"Shit, do you see him!" Ken, a boy who was part of their team, shouted as he looked to the other side.
"Paddle faster!" Eric urged more, his eyes turning to a boy stripping naked near the shore. "I told you guys that guy was the reason we lost last year."
Ash turned, confused by what they were saying, until the person he had fixed his eyes on dived into the water, submerging himself inside just enough for Ash to see his feet turn half fish.
"Hoho!" Ash laughed in surprise, but those who were paddling with him shared a completely different expression.
BOOM!
The boat behind them crashed onto one of the floating buoys.
"Ash, focus!" Ajax shouted behind him, eyes fixed on Ash, who was looking around too much.
"I'm sorry, man," Ash said, shaking his head, then looking to the front. "But did you see that? Those guys literally used an axe against the cat women." He laughed as he said it.
"It's not cat women, it's Pussycats," Xavier corrected from the front, "And why do you seem like it's exciting you?"
Ash didn't reply; he only laughed, causing those who were paddling with him to share a similar fate.
"Guys, I don't wanna jinx it…" Eric said, smiling widely and eyes nearly widened, "But I think we might actually win this…"
"Stop jinxing it," Xavier said, shaking his head, trying his hardest not to smile. "Grab the rope," he continued as the boat neared the shore, climbing onto the ground as they all stood up quickly in unison.
"Both Xavier and I will run to get the flag," Ajax said, climbing off and tying the rope to a stone. "You three should just make sure no one touches the boat… let's go." He bolted forward, with Xavier following behind him.
Ash clicked his tongue, slightly disappointed that they had left him behind.
The rest of the boats arrived, first were the Pussycats, who gave Wednesday the right to pursue the flag; then it was Bianca's team, who let her leave for the flag with another member.
Ash's eyes turned immediately, placing their orbs on Enid, who was staring at him.
She waved, causing him to wave back, and then he turned to his teammates.
"I'm going to take a leak," he said, moving to the other side of the bushes. "Don't peek." He laughed, causing cringed expressions to appear on their faces.
Ash pulled it out, pissing on the soil and causing the sand to turn to mud.
It took a second or two until a sound came dashing toward him.
"Shit!" He jumped, pulling up his pants immediately. "I told you guys not to peek…" He paused, eyes conflicted by what they were staring at.
A hand, standing on all five with patched bruises.
Ash backed up, watching as it stared at him up and down as though it had eyes to begin with.
Then, more sounds came from where it emerged, causing it to run away, climbing a branch from a bush and jumping, fading from his sight.
Ash turned, watching as three figures emerged.
"Damn, we lost it," Eric said, shaking his head while turning toward Ash, "Oh… forgot you took this direction." He scratched the back of his head, "Did you happen to, I don't know, maybe see a hand running around…"
"Raise the rope!"
They turned in sync, their eyes locking on Ajax, who was shouting and moving toward the boat.
"Shit!" Eric uttered, then turned and ran toward it, causing everyone else, Ash included, to follow.
"Where were you guys?" Xavier asked when they arrived, but there wasn't any time for them to answer. They got in, cutting the rope they tied behind them, and started paddling. "Go, go, go!"
Unaware that behind them, seated and waiting for a fainted retainer, was Enid, who was laughing by herself.
"Shit!" Eric panicked, "We might actually win this…"
"Don't jinx it…" Xavier said, unaware that he was uttering the magic words.
Because suddenly, as if triggered by a command, the boat started sinking.
"Fuck… what's going on?" Xavier shot.
But then, passing from behind them, the Pussycats laughed, paddling their way to victory.
"They fucking sabotaged us!" he spat, sighing while shaking his head, "How did this even happen? You guys should have been guarding…"
"Okay, relax!" Ash pulled the upper part of his shirt, causing it to rip.
They stared, confused by what he was doing.
He inserted the shirt into the holes on the boat, making sure it covered all of them. Then, he took off his shoe and used it as a cup, scooping out the water that was still submerged inside.
"What are you waiting for?!" Ash looked up, noting how everyone was just staring, "We are sinking… paddle!"
His voice made them regain focus, pulling them out of their thoughts and causing them to start paddling.
The water entering from the cotton-covered holes seeped faster, but Ash used his shoe to scoop everything out.
"We are catching up!" Eric said, smiling as he paddled.
"Stop jinxing everything!" Xavier shouted from the back, clearly angered by the lad.
Then suddenly, as though once again spoken because of a command, hands emerged from below, slowing down the boat and pushing it toward a buoy.
"Give me a sec," Ash said, frowning. "Hold this." He handed Eric his shoe.
He bent over the boat, looking below in agitation.
Then, he found him.
BOOM!
A shockwave erupted when he punched the boy in the water, causing waves to emerge and the boat itself to shake violently.
Even with water resistance, the boy's body launched downward, his consciousness long gone, sinking after the hit.
"I got him!" Ash said, laughing as he fixed himself, but when he looked straight ahead, his eyes were met with some stares from his team, absolutely stunned, because they themselves couldn't comprehend what had happened. "Don't worry… the guy can breathe in water, he'll be fine." He took his shoe from Eric, then continued with the scooping. "I think…"
~~~ [END]

Okay, this chapter is probably really hard to understand if you didn't watch the show.

So basically, the boy Ash punched was a Siren, who are basically fish people who can breathe in water. 😭
