"Well… that guy was pretty dumb," Ash said, watching the passing cars as they walked through the streets of Jericho.
"It's subjective," Wednesday replied, paying little attention to the little girl they were passing, who appeared to be selling cookies.
"Good thing she didn't call the school," Ash said, turning to the cookie girl, as the evil thought of secretly stealing a box instinctively crossed his mind. "Imagine getting expelled for something I was part of but in some way… didn't really understand."
He turned back to Wednesday, and as always, she paid little attention to his words, or maybe she did listen, and he just wasn't smart enough to understand that it was hard for it to show.
THUD!
A hint of frustration built within him as she opened the door to a cafe.
So he leaped, grabbing hold of Wednesday's arm before she could go far, then tightened his grip, causing her to narrow her eyes and stare upward at his tall, standing figure.
"What is this?" he asked in a whisper, eyes fully locked with hers. "What's the motive?"
Wednesday just kept quiet, her eyes drifting to his hand, which was completely holding her arm.
Ash came to his senses, hesitated, then quickly let go.
There was silence, eyes still interlocked.
"Look… like it or not, you're forcing me to do this with you, whatever this is. But I can't go into this blindly without knowing what's going on or what you want me to do," Ash said, still noticing how her stare persisted, unmoved, unshaken, and unaffected by his words. "What?" he said, also not moving his eyes. "Why aren't you saying anything?"
"Ash?... Wednesday?" Xavier walked in, coming out of the cafe's staff room. "What are you doing here? Aren't you guys supposed to be in Pilgrim World or something?"
Wednesday nearly turned to Xavier, but once again, Ash's hand shot forward, holding her arm in place, stopping her from walking away. So she turned to him again, eyes moving back to his.
"I need you to tell me what's going on," Ash said, slightly pulling her closer to him. "I can't keep doing this if you keep placing me in the dark."
There was a pause for a while, one that even Xavier, who was taking some plates from the nearby chairs, seemed to notice.
Then, Wednesday nodded, causing Ash to let go of her arm.
Ash sighed, feeling as though he had grown too exhausted from pushing for the current result. So he just watched as Wednesday moved to the counter, right next to Xavier.
RING!
She rang a bell, causing Ash to notice the frown on Xavier's face as he himself made his way to one of the sofas, sitting down, and hopefully, if granted by the heavens, an opportunity to see some drama.
"Wednesday," a freaky, tall-ish boy in a man's body walked in, immediately causing Ash to share the same expression as Xavier, who was now walking away, making his way back to the kitchen. "What are you doing here?" Tyler continued, a smile almost spreading across his lips.
"I need some help," Wednesday said, moving to one of the chairs, then placing a map she had taken out of her bag. "Do you know the original Pilgrim meeting house, the one from the 1600s?"
"I mean, yeah," Tyler said, nearly stunned by her question, "but what's left is pretty much in ruins…"
"Show me," she shot before he could continue, placing her eyes on the map.
"Uh… it's… here," Tyler pointed it out, watching as Wednesday circled the particular spot with a marker. "That place is pretty sketchy… and hey, what's this about?" he tried to ask.
"Nothing important," Wednesday said, folding her map and placing it inside her bag. "Thank you," she said to him, walking away after her words.
"Hey, listen," Tyler said, running to her before she could leave, "the ruins are kinda tricky to find. I could take you there this afternoon, my shift ends at two…"
"Principal Weems would hang, draw, and quarter me if I missed the big statue dedication," Wednesday said, turning her head to Ash, who was seated nearby. "And besides, I have company."
"Company?" Tyler asked, frowning, as a hand suddenly held his shoulder from behind.
"Damn, man, you smell familiar," Ash said, tapping Tyler, then letting him go. "I swear, I feel like I know you from somewhere."
Tyler paused as his eyes landed on Ash, his hands folding into fists, and his anger intensifying by the minute.
"Let's go," Wednesday said, causing Ash to nod while waving Tyler off, unaware that he was fuming like a burning furnace.
THUD!
The door shut with Ash and Wednesday's exit, leaving an inwardly growling monster with remembrance of what the child of an immortal had done.
How could it ever forget?

{ELSEWHERE} {MINUTES LATER}
"I should have taken an umbrella," Ash said, eyes turning upward and looking at the weirdly dark-colored, cloudy sky, even though it was only 1 p.m.
"Do you always have to complain?" Wednesday asked, her words sounding more like a statement rather than a question.
"Nope, not really," Ash replied, following behind her. "I usually never complain about anything… but with you, I'm just trying my luck, you know, just hoping that one day you'll grow annoyed and free me from this slavery…"
Ash stopped as he heard Wednesday's footsteps come to a complete halt.
"Why did…" he stared up, as his eyes met a half-burned, broken-down cottage. "Ooh…" he said dramatically, "So… scary."
