~~~ [START]
"Good morrow, my young Nevermore kin," a woman spoke, driving away all existing interest from Ash, who was standing at the far back, surrounded by his schoolmates.
"You should really put your phone away," said a young, beautiful girl who was standing near him. Ash quickly looked up, noting that she had visibly admirable features. "She said we should put our phones on vibrate."
"Of course," Ash said, smiling as he turned off his phone. He then stared at her, wishing that, by luck, he would see a strand of interest. And he did, he saw how she blushed when he replied to her words. So, he quickly took action.
"Maybe you should hold it for me," he said, drawing it toward her. "And while you're at it, give me your number." He winked, analyzing as the girl's eyes widened with impending disbelief. "I'll take it when this thing is…"
"I have a query," Wednesday suddenly said from the front, causing Ash, who was trying by all means to avoid her, to feel somewhat uncomfortable. "In the meeting house, which of Joseph Crackstone's artifacts are…"
Wednesday's words faded out as the girl Ash was talking to grabbed his phone from his hand. Ash turned, watching as she moved to his contacts, dialing her number in less than a second.
"Done," she said, handing it back to him. Her cheeks completely turned red, overwhelmed with unending blushes. "Call me." Then she walked away, leaving Ash to laugh at his own achievement. She had been the tenth girl he had successfully pulled that very day.
"We have to find a way to sneak into the meeting house," Wednesday said, appearing from nowhere, causing Ash to turn visibly stunned.
"Of course," he said without asking many questions. He had grown too fond of her habits, how she would weirdly expect him to know what she was talking about, or how she would completely leave him out, yet, at the same time, still required him to do most of her bidding like a ghoul.
{ELSEWHERE}
"Ajax! I just spent all morning flirting, hinting, and trying to act cute while brushing some roadkill just so you could ask me on a freaking date!" Enid suddenly said, looking at Ajax directly in the eyes as she spoke.
"Oh…" Her words took Ajax aback; his eyes widened, and his mind was clearly not expecting it. "Oh… so that's what you were doing." His heart pounded, disbelief creeping into his eyes as he noticed her widening smile.
But then something hit, maybe a fact that always lay dominant.
"So… you wanna meet up behind the greenhouse tonight?" he asked again, for the first time in his life truly wondering if what was happening was real or a dream.
Enid nodded, which completely shook him to the very core. Because if it wasn't a dream, then why would Ash's name cloud his thoughts as soon as she asked him out?
Why did the thought that perhaps he wasn't good enough cloud the depth of his spirit, even if he was within the confines of true reality?
He stared at her, her eyes visibly waiting for an answer.
"Yeah…" he said, hesitating, perhaps even sounding unsure. "Yeah… I would love to."
Then his heart took a hit, feeling as though its face had been stabbed by a knife.
Not that long ago, that morning, he had seen her staring at Ash from a distance, watching his every move like a stalker. So, was he wrong in needing some type of reassurance? Was he truly that foul?
He didn't know, but all he understood was that this was his only chance, this was the only shot, an opportunity heaven had mysteriously offered him.
Was it luck?
Or karma pending?
{ELSEWHERE}
"No… I'm not touching that," Ash said, staring at a retainer covered in puke, which Eugene was handing to him. He turned to Wednesday, who was standing near the meeting-house door. "Why don't you do it?" he continued. "And who said I know anything about how to pick a lock?"
But Wednesday just stared at him, truly unbothered by his consistent complaints. So, Ash sighed, shook his head, then grabbed the retainer from Eugene's hands.
"Wipe your mouth, man," Ash said to him, wiping the vomit off the retainer with Eugene's blazer. He then moved to the door, bending and inserting the metal within the keyhole.
Click!
In less than the drain of a second, the door snapped open.
Without question, Wednesday walked in.
"Thank you, Ash. That was so helpful… oh, Ash, wow, how did you do that so fast, you are my hero, Ash… my hero," Ash whispered, rolling his eyes while swinging his arms dramatically. He then clicked his tongue, turning to Eugene, who was watching his every action. "Just keep watch," he said, handing the retainer back to him.
Thud!
Ash closed the door behind him, immediately noticing the large statue standing in the middle of the room.
"You know… I don't feel comfortable with this," Ash said, unbothered by how Wednesday ignored his every word. He then sat at one table, leaning his body backward on its ledge, watching Wednesday as she took out Thing, who still to that day gave him the creeps. "I get you have your own motives, but at this point, I'm practically a headless chicken."
Wednesday turned to the paintings, analyzing and investigating everything together with help from Thing.
"I don't even know why you need me here," Ash continued, watching as she moved to a glass stand, one that had a book in it. "I mean, I get you're trying to use me as bait for the monster guy, so why bring me here? Why Pilgrim World? Why take me with you in your unknown investigations or something…"
"It's fake," she suddenly interrupted him, now holding a book she had removed from the glass stand.
"Huh?" Ash was visibly puzzled. So, she turned the book to him, then flipped through the pages to reveal an empty slot, completely brand new.
DOO!
The door flung open, and Eugene suddenly entered, being held by the ear by the same woman who was responsible for escorting them.
"Just what the fudge are you doing in here… Missy?" She said, her grip around Eugene's ear tightening.
"I'm sorry, Wednesday," Eugene said, standing on his tiptoes to reduce the pressure. "I told her the door was unlocked, and that you were dying to learn everything about 'Crack-stone'."
Click!
Ash clapped his forehead in disbelief, truly stunned that a nerd who was simply too oblivious had ratted them out.
