~~~ [START]
The night covered the dorms, and the only light seeping through came from the many lamps lined up on the doorframes of each room.
THUD!
The door opened as a tired Xavier moved to his side of the room, throwing his body backward into the embrace of the white, soft bedsheets.
He stared at the ceiling for a second too long until his mouth finally spoke.
"Do you like her?" he asked, causing Ash, who was also lying in a similar posture, to raise a brow.
"Who?"
"Your wife?"
They both laughed when he spoke, filling the room with a soft, damp atmosphere.
"Nope," Ash didn't hesitate, his giggles replaced by confident surety. "You?" he shot back.
Silence, or maybe the lingering effect of thought.
"I…" Xavier's words proved hesitant, mouth still open as if holding back something he might forever regret. "I don't know," he finally said, sighing and bringing his hands up to brush the stress right out of his face. "I have no freaking idea."
{THE NEXT DAY}
"All students will report to their volunteer jobs," Weems said, causing many of the students to clap their hands in joy.
Students moved around, accepting their random job assignments, while others cried in anguish, clearly cursing their unlucky picks.
"Ash!" Ajax called from the back, looking toward Ash, who was approaching. "What did you get?"
"I got Weathervane," Ash said, lifting the paper and handing it to Ajax, not really bothering about it.
"Nooo!" Xavier cried. "We got the same place! Ajax, please switch with me!"
Ash raised his brow, stunned by Xavier's words.
"Bro, why are you acting like you don't enjoy hanging around me?" he said, and Xavier laughed when he heard him.
"Nah, it's not that," Xavier said, taking the page from Ajax and then handing it back to Ash. "Weathervane is basically a bunch of storm chasers. It's supposed to be fun, but storms usually never happen. So… the only thing they let you do there is study some geography. The whole day becomes a waste of time."
"I don't think there's anything wrong with geography," Ash said, shrugging his shoulders. "Kinda my favorite subject…"
"The class restricts the use of cell phones," Ajax added.
"Fuck!" Ash said quickly, turning to Ajax. "Switch with me."
Both Ajax and Xavier laughed when they heard him.
{LATER THAT DAY}
"Come on, John," Ash said, hanging his arm on the shoulder of a short, chubby boy with glasses. "I promise I'll pay you back. Just buy me the vanilla." He turned toward the ice cream truck parked beside them.
John licked his ice cream, expression frowning, and his feet nearly moved away.
Ash clicked his tongue, noting the silence from the fat lad he was begging.
"Is this about Malish?" Ash finally asked, causing John to shoot his eyes toward him.
"It's Malissa! Malissa, not Malish! Malissa!" John said, and Ash scratched the back of his head, awkwardly laughing.
"Come on, man," Ash forced a smile, tapping John on the back. "You know that wasn't my intention…"
"She kissed you, Ash," John muttered, and Ash sighed.
"We both know she was the one who leaned in…" Ash tried to explain. "And besides, she only kissed me on the cheek…"
"But you allowed it," John finished, eyes nearing the verge of tears. "You knew I liked her, but you let her kiss you."
He shrugged his shoulders, causing the hand Ash had hung around him to drop. He didn't turn back; he just walked away.
"Motherfucker!" Ash shouted to himself, stomping his feet on the ground in anger.
He then sighed slowly, turning toward the ice cream truck parked behind him.
The owner just stared at him, and as soon as Ash was about to approach.
THUD!
He closed the window.
"No money, no ice cream," he said in a Japanese accent, causing Ash to frown while shaking his head in disapproval.
But as Ash turned around, all instinct screamed 'retreat', because there she was: Wednesday.
Standing with Xavier, staring at a white-painted wall.
And as if favored by misfortune, she instantly turned her eyes to him.
Ash turned around, not caring if she noticed that he was trying to sprint away.
But a hand suddenly touched his shoulder from behind, and he frowned, turning in wonder at who it was.
And right there, standing like the embodiment of impossible, was Wednesday.
A girl who, less than a minute ago, was standing almost twenty feet away from him was right there, right in front of his eyes.
"How..." he tried to ask.
"Which placement did you get?" she interrupted with a question, immediately silencing him.
He took a page out of his pocket, giving it to her as she read it.
He could hear a sigh escape her lips, silent enough to sound undead.
"Find someone to switch with you," Wednesday said, handing the page back to him. "We need to go to Pilgrim World."
"Huh?" Ash asked, hesitating. "Wait… why?" He raised a brow, questioning her demand.
She just stared at him, and he frowned, noting how she stood there, unwilling to answer.
He sighed, and she started walking away.
"Make it quick," she said, leaving him with the fading sound of her silent footsteps.
Ash just shook his head, trying to remind himself why he even listened to her.
He turned, and his expression changed completely.
"Mike!" he shouted, waving at a boy who had no facial features. "What do you mean, 'what do I want from you?'… Let me take a look at your job placement."
