Chapter 1 - Chapter One

Fuck.

That was the only thought going through my mind right now as I stared at the red eyes of my would-be predator, its white mask doing nothing to ease the terror I was feeling, the unfamiliar weight of my clothes on my body, and the sword in my hand doing nothing to aid me either, I did not know how to use this thing.

The giant wolf-like creature took a step toward me, a growl ripping out of its throat, the bone-like protrusions on its body leaving gashes in the tightly packed trees.

It didn't take long to pounce, and my whole body froze up, not knowing how to respond to the situation as its maw closed around my neck, pain shooting through my body before I heard a sickening crack, the world going black soon after.

The world was a haze for a few seconds after that, before my eyes snapped open, staring up at the sky. My lungs took in air at a rapid pace, and my body shot up. My hand clutched at my neck, the skin feeling wrong to the touch.

I looked around, and the densely packed forest was still there, and I was still alive.

Slowly, I calmed down, my breathing evened out, and my mind slowly but surely cleared.

I groaned as I stood up, looking down at my hands, still clad in gloves, but my left hand's forearm was visible. The skin was green, broken in some places. All in all, I wasn't looking good.

I sighed, rubbing the bridge of my nose, which felt stretchy, unnatural. Ignoring the disgust I felt, I stood up, looking around. I definitely wasn't going in that direction again...

I definitely needed to be more freaked out about what was happening. I just died, I just died, but I was still processing the fact that I was somewhere I wasn't supposed to be.

And I had no idea where I was either.

With a thought, the panel that dictated my stats opened in front of me, looking over the familiar numbers. I knew what I had, mostly because I was told, and largely because I saw this very panel on a screen most days.

I had no souls to level myself up from being level 13, and I suspected I wouldn't have them any time soon, and that was okay, as long as it didn't take too long, I had to learn how to use the sword, since I was not stuck in the game animations, thank the god that sent me here for that.

I went into my inventory, looking at the Human Effigy I chose as a gift. It seemed like the wisest choice, since there were no bonfires here.

It was tempting to use right now, but I wasn't in dire need of it since it was only five percent of my health missing for now, or more accurately, I was five percent less durable... But my skin, being as it was, is enough of a reason to use it.

Not falling for the temptation, I instead went into my armor options and equipped the imported set piece by piece, observing as my clothing changed the moment I pressed equip. It covered most of my skin, so that was good enough for now.

Closing the panel, I looked around for a moment before turning away from the direction I had gone before and going exactly the opposite way.

I did not want to encounter that thing again anytime soon. Not even five minutes here, and I already died once. This wasn't a good start at all.

That thing was like going against a mid to early to mid-game boss, and I wasn't going to do that the way I was now.

The forest was dense as I walked, no idea where I was heading, but still being as careful as I could to not encounter something like that giant black wolf.

As I walked, I couldn't help but ponder on my new situation, I was in an unfamiliar world, with what seemed like monsters I haven't seen before.

All in all... I could handle it.

From what I was told by the one that sent me here, I had two years to get into this place called "Beacon", I didn't know what that was, but I would find out eventually, I just had a feeling.

I stopped suddenly, my steps pausing as I heard a loud snap resonating in the silence of the forest, my body freezing up.

I slowly turned, my eyes meeting the eyes of the same creature that killed me not long ago and just stared.

What kind of bullshittery is this?

I went the other way, I was sure of it, why was it hear? Did I aggro it? I'm pretty sure I didn't, and I wasn't too keen on dying again, but I didn't have much of a choice it seemed.

My hand clutched at my sword for a moment as I took a cautious step back, which seemed to only aggravate the creature more as it's body broke out into a sudden run, heading right toward me.

I raised my sword, clutching at it with both hands as I tried to intercept his strike, I did, but it didn't do much good, only serving to knock me back, along with knocking the air out of my lungs.

Well, shit.

I gathered myself just in time to see the thing lunging at me again and I could feel my eyes widen. My body tensed and I watched as the very sharp claws of the beast heading toward my head.

I took a step back as it came close, my body tense, ready for impact, the world seemed to slow down as I watched the claws reach my body, sinking into my clothes and skin, I braced myself for the pain, only for none to come, as the claw passed through my body.

My thoughts came to a stop at the sudden realization... I frames...

I had temporary invincibility.

That thought didn't last long, however, as the bests other claw came right for my head.

"Aw, come on..."

I muttered as I felt the claw impact before everything went black, again.
