Chapter 9 - Chapter Nine

The monotony of it all was mind-boggling.

Sitting in the cramped cargo of goods while it moved at the dumbass driver hit every damn bump on the road was making me want to hit my head on a tree every five minutes.

I wanted smoke. I wanted to run the fade with somebody, something.

But it was peaceful. Nothing attacked us the whole day. And not just today, but the last two days too, we were already almost at the city.

I leaned my head back, staring up at the sky, morally defeated.

"You alright there, boy?"

I looked to the side, my face still conveying the defeat I felt.

"I'm fine, Vlad, just bored..."

The man just chuckled, running a hand through his hair to pull it back, before flicking his wrist to get rid of the sweat. It was a hot day today, but weirdly enough, I did not feel a thing.

"I know, I know, I can feel your boredom affecting me too."

He grinned, chuckling and reaching into the bag he kept at his side, pulling out a small pouch and tossing it back at me. I raised am arm, catching it and opening it slightly, looking inside to see some Lien.

Paycheck, fuck yeah.

"We're already there, have your payment a little early."

He hummed, and I put the pouch in my pocket, tossing it into the inventory.

Money, hehehehe.

Soon enough, we were at the walls of the city, headed to the gates. As soon as the carriage came to a stop, a few guards checked over the carriage, asked Vlad a few questions, and some sent me questionable looks, until Vlad interjected before they could ask questions.

After a few seconds of conversation, we were sent inside the city, and damn, if it wasn't different from the village I was staying in for the past month.

People were everywhere, kids, adults, even the elders, walking around, going about their day, shops lined the streets, people going in and coming out...

It was basically like any city.

"That's the building you want to go to for some jobs."

Vlad pointed at the street after we made our way deeper inside.

I followed his hand, raising an eyebrow at the seemingly ordinary-looking building, humming at the sign.

"What's in there?"

I asked lamely, and Vlad looked at me weirdly before sighing.

"I keep forgetting you grew up under a rock, kid. That's where Huntsmen in training go to do jobs, and you technically qualify, you can also get a license to do higher-tier jobs around the city border."

I hummed, nodding, I was following along so far.

"And the building next to it is a hotel you can stay at."

Yeah, I was just planning to take a job and stay out of the city for a day to farm some souls, but the thought was nice. Can't waste the money I don't have, that's just irresponsible.

I leaned back in the carriage, just observing the city for a moment, letting the streets pass by my field of view.

This was my life for the predictable future, just seeing new places here and there, and honestly, I did not mind it, this was nice.

"You know, you can leave to explore the city now, right? Your job is done."

I blinked, once, twice, and hummed, Oh yeah, right.

I got to my feet on the carriage, jumping off and landing on the ground, before waving at Vlad, who waved back in response.

Making my way towards the sidewalk to get out of the way of any vehicles, and made my way towards the building Vlad pointed out, walking inside to see...

"Are those Holographs?"

I muttered, my eyebrows shooting up into my hairline. This world had holographs? The fuck?

My eyes scanned over the room, seeing a few people in what could be considered extravagant clothing carrying weapons, looking at the texts on the said hologram.

I hummed quietly, walking towards one of the reception desks, being greeted by a blonde woman with... were those cat ears?

I blinked for a moment, looking at the cat ears in wonder.

"Can I help you?"

She asked, and I snapped back to reality, recognizing the forced politeness in her tone. She seemed rather annoyed at me, probably because I was staring, was that a taboo in this world? Were cat girls normal here?

I cleared my throat awkwardly before managing to gather my thoughts to respond.

"My apologies... Would it be possible to take on some of these tasks?"

I asked, my awkward ass sounding like I came straight from a medieval novel. I can't talk to women! What was I thinking?

"Are you a Huntsman in training?"

She raised an eyebrow at me, pulling a few papers closer. I just shook my head in response. A hum escaped the back of her throat as she put the first paper from the stack away.

"Do you have any sort of training, Aura and, or a Semblance?"

Oh, she was doing a procedure, she wasn't actually curious at all.

"I have had training with a family member who was a retired family member. I do currently have Aura and a Semblance."

This was so much easier, I could actually relax once it was all business.

"I see."

She nodded and pulled the remaining papers closer and grabbed a pen, and so began the recording of my totally legit, and not at all made-up information, Source? Me.

It took half an hour, and a few repeated questions, a picture being taken, a few signatures, before I was finally standing in front of a hologram of missions, with a card of my provisional license in my hand.

I, the person with a shitty laptop and no life, Dark Souls II enthusiast because that was the only thing I could run... Now have a job...

Oh, how far I've fallen...
