Chapter 1 - Failed Awakening

"This is his seventh time trying. Do you really think that he has the ability to awaken?"

"The boy's bloody eighteen years old, he has to!"

Levian heard the harsh voices of his mother and father as they spoke about the ceremony.

He blocked them out, just as he had blocked out the voices of his two older brothers, and anybody else watching.

Just focus on the awakening stone...

The wind blew a breeze through his jet black hair as he squeezed his eyes shut and placed his hand above the glowing purple stone.

All nearby chatter was blocked out from his ears. A technique he had practised during meditation.

He was waiting for the feeling that everyone spoke of.

That spark that you feel flowing through your body, as though you're becoming an entirely new being.

But instead.

[Failed Awakening]

"..."

"Goodness me Lee, another failed awakening!"

Levian opened his eyes and looked down at the stone before him.

He cursed under his breath once he saw that it had no longer glowed purple.

A sign of failure.

THUD

A heavy hand fell on his shoulder.

He looked up to see his brother towering over him with a wide grin on his face.

"Don't cry about it, Lee. You're only 2 years behind everyone else."

Levian slapped away his brother's hand.

"Fuck you, Malachi." He spat, marching off back towards the chariot that his family arrived in.

Everyone else in the plaza was mocking him amongst themselves.

They had every right to.

In the World of Malo, 90% of the human population were able to awaken.

Some would awaken talents, classes, and abilities that would make them some of the strongest people that had ever lived.

Others awakened talents suited more towards mundane tasks, such as crafting and discoveries.

However, those with a bloodline so insignificant, such as peasants and slaves, could not awaken at all.

So why me?

I'm the youngest son of the Bladeblessed family. A blade-blooded noble!

Levian sat alone in his chariot for a while, mood completely sullied.

After his family had said their goodbyes to the other nobles in attendance, they finally joined him in the chariot.

First was his oldest brother, Malachi. He was a large, muscular man with blonde hair and a mocking grin on his face.

Next was his other older brother, and the middle child of the family, Adam. Many had described his appearance as feminine, due to his pretty face, long blonde hair, and slight frame.

Adam flashed his younger brother a comforting smile as he sat beside him.

"Do not worry, Levian. They say that King Rose did not awaken until he was twenty-one years old. It's not over for you yet." Adam said, clearly the nicer of the two older brothers.

Malachi let out a bellowing laugh.

"Don't sell the kid false hopes. King Rose's situation was different. During his time, we had just entered the Age Of Despair. He was only able to come into possession of an Awakening crystal by the age of 21, and he succeeded the first time." The oldest explained.

Adam scratched at his head with a nervous smile on his face. "Well..."

"Silence!"

A deep, heavy voice came from one of the final two figures to enter the chariot.

In an instant, the siblings stopped their rambling.

The voice belonged to Lord Odin, their father.

Like his two oldest children, Odin's hair was golden blonde. At his chin was a grizzly beard, and his frame was large, though not as large as Malachi's.

He wore a black Victorian suit, as did most nobles; however, draped over his shoulders was the red cape of the Bladeblessed family.

Through his right eye was a viscous scar, claiming its vision.

Following behind him was his wife, Amara, their mother.

She wore a long black dress, and her hair was jet black, like their youngest son, Levian.

The two sat down opposite the siblings, creating a gloomy atmosphere.

Lord Odin leaned his face on his palm and glared down at his youngest, who had just failed to awaken for the seventh time.

"I am disappointed in you." Odin's voice came coldly, as the chariot began to head back towards their family estate.

Well, I'm disappointed in myself too. So what now? It's not like I have control over whether I awaken or not...

"I'm sorry, Father." Levian apologised anyway. He knew better than to voice his true thoughts.

Odin remained silent for a few moments. His face only became harder.

"What am I to do about your arranged marriage to that young lady? I promised her father that the two of you would produce strong, powerful, battlemages!"

Malachi chuckled to the side, but one glance from their father stopped him.

"I... perhaps that can still happen, Father. King Rose didn't awaken until he was twenty-one." Levian stuttered hopefully.

Odin squinted his eyes towards his youngest child, in disbelief at what he had just heard.

"Are you a fool? King Rose was born during the... Ah, why am I explaining history to an educated child? Just shut your mouth and don't say another word until we're home."

Levian did as he was told, and sulked in his seat.

After a while, the rest of the family engaged in delicate chatter about the state of the human empire, and the ongoing apocalypse.

Levian was not allowed to get involved.

Once they returned to their large family estate, Levian wasted no time in heading back to his chambers.

He didn't want to eat dinner, or be seen by anybody else.

He just wanted to sleep.

However, as he arrived at the door of his bedroom, he found someone standing outside with a worried look on their face.

Is that...

"Cassius, is that you?"

The young elf Cassius was startled at the voice of his master. His cheeks brightened and he pulled at his sleeves nervously.

"M-master Levian." He bowed, long brown hair almost scraping the ground. "I trust that your Awakening was—"

"I failed, again, and I'd rather not talk about it." Levian interrupted. "Right now, all I want to do is sleep."

The young servant nodded his head diligently, yet something seemed to be bothering him.

"O-of course, but before you enter, I want to warn you that something strange is going on in there..." Cassius stuttered. "I had nothing to do with it, I swear to the elven gods!"

"Jheez, alright, calm down. Besides, you're not supposed to believe in the elven gods anymore."

The elf grew frightened at his mishaps, wondering whether he would be punished, but Levian waved it off.

"Don't sweat it. Anyways, let's have a look at what's inside. It can't be that strange."

Levian gently pushed open the door and stepped inside, whilst his personal servant lingered by the entrance, closing the door quickly behind him.

At first, his chambers seemed the same as they always had. Large and luxurious.

Then, he felt it. A powerful presence lingering beneath the covers of his bed, where a strange object bulged.

He looked back at Cassius.

"I... thought it would be best to hide it."

Now Levian was worried.

What reason would the servant have to hide the object?

Before drawing back the covers, he picked up his steel shortsword and held it ready.

He might not be awakened, but he was definitely well trained with the blade.

Finally, after a few deep breaths, he pulled the covers from his bed.

And there he saw it, a jagged stone glowing a shade of bright red.

His eyes went wide, and his jaw dropped to the ground.

An awakening stone?
