"Although Shunpo is considered a basic form of HohĹŤ (Flash Steps), and not as advanced as the Quincy's Hirenkyaku or the Arrancar's SonĂdo, it's precisely this simplicity that gives it high versatility."
"Because it's not difficult to learn, most Shinigami can perform Shunpo with ease. And since its structure is simple, it also means it can be adapted and expanded—enhanced into more refined or specialized techniques."
"As far as I know, your Shihouin family has developed several advanced applications based on Shunpo."
Yoruichi nodded in acknowledgment.
While those techniques are technically house secrets, it wasn't a secret that the Shihouin Clan was renowned for their mastery of HohĹŤ. Her grandfather, in particular, had taken great pride in developing one such advanced form.
That technique, which utilized an afterimage left behind while moving, was called Utsusemi—"Empty Cicada."
Yoruichi remembered being slightly embarrassed when he named it after such a poetic metaphor, despite how effective it was. At the time, she had promised herself that if she ever created a new technique, she wouldn't name it after herself—it just felt too dramatic.
Returning to the moment, after acknowledging his point, Yoruichi couldn't help but wonder why Gosuke Shigure had brought it up so deliberately.
She asked curiously:
"Sensei, are you bringing this up because you're going to teach me a more advanced form of Shunpo?"
Gosuke Shigure smiled.
"I'd love to teach you more, but I'd be lying if I said I could surpass the Shihouin Clan's own techniques."
"Besides, you already have access to so many high-level Hohō skills through your family—aren't those enough for you to master?"
Yoruichi smirked.
"Even if the Shihouin Clan has plenty of advanced techniques, those belong to the clan. Not to you, sensei. That's different."
"You're greedy," Gosuke said with a small shake of his head, amused.
"But, I do have a concept I've been toying with. If you could grasp it, you might drastically increase your mobility and offensive capability."
That caught Yoruichi's full attention. She leaned forward, eager.
"Tell me!"
Gosuke Shigure paused to organize his thoughts before speaking.
"Let's set aside Shunpo for a moment and look at the Quincy's Hirenkyaku. Because Quincies manipulate Reishi in the environment, they can gather particles beneath their feet and create footholds in the air. That's what gives Hirenkyaku its high-speed mobility—even in flight."
"That's one of the reasons Hirenkyaku is considered more advanced than Shunpo."
"But while Shinigami don't have the same affinity for environmental Reishi, we do have a way of controlling our spiritual energy: KidĹŤ."
"KidĹŤ?" Yoruichi looked puzzled, unsure how this related.
Gosuke nodded.
"Typically, KidĹŤ requires incantation. The chant serves as a kind of 'key' to access the technique's full power. Yes, skilled practitioners can skip the chant, but that usually diminishes the KidĹŤ's effect."
"Now, I'm not going to lecture you about KidĹŤ itself."
"I'm telling you this because… under certain conditions, it's possible to cast a Kidō near-instantaneously."
"Even if it's not at full power, that doesn't matter. What's important is that the KidĹŤ activates quickly."
"So here's the idea: what if we didn't cast the Kidō outward at all—but instead wrapped it around the body?"
"You already know how Shunpo works—concentrating Reiatsu in your foot and detonating it for propulsion. But what if you could layer Kidō around your whole body—using it to boost mobility, augment strikes, or even enhance your defense in motion?"
What Gosuke was describing was, in fact, the precursor concept to a technique Yoruichi would one day develop herself: Shunkō—a technique that combines Hakuda (hand-to-hand combat) with Kidō, using compressed spiritual energy enveloping the body for explosive power and mobility.
Even Sui-Feng, her subordinate, would later develop her own variation of the technique in the Thousand-Year Blood War arc.
At this point in time, Gosuke Shigure couldn't be sure whether Yoruichi had already begun formulating this kind of hybrid technique.
But he had no problem planting the idea early.
If Yoruichi could master it ahead of its original timeline, that would be a major advantage.
And when the time came, he could learn it back from her—the one who had successfully implemented it.
As for trying it himself?
Gosuke had considered it—but quickly dismissed the thought.
There were too many types of Kidō—Hadō, Bakudō, Kaidō—and hundreds of unofficial techniques.
Finding one suitable for rapid cycling without incantation was incredibly difficult.
Even then, regulating the energy output around the body would be a major challenge.
And more importantly, even if he succeeded, it would be just a minor enhancement to his fighting style—not a breakthrough.
It wasn't worth the enormous investment of time and trial.
Better to leave this kind of foundational work to someone like Yoruichi—young, talented, and passionate about evolving technique.
"Wrapping Kidō around the body to boost movement and striking power…" Yoruichi murmured, as if tasting the idea aloud.
Gosuke's words seemed to ignite something inside her, opening a door she hadn't realized was closed.
"That… actually sounds brilliant."
Gosuke smiled and added:
"If you think so, give it a try. But be careful—some Kidō spells can be volatile."
"And if you do make it work, you have to show me."
With that, the lesson wrapped up, and Gosuke resumed his more structured teaching for the day.
After a full day of instruction, Gosuke Shigure departed from the Shihouin estate and returned to the 11th Division.
After all, he was still a captain of the Gotei 13—not a full-time tutor.
Today had been a rare moment of shared training.
As for when the next would be—neither of them could say.
