After returning to the 11th Division, Gosuke Shigure reviewed the accumulated paperwork and squad affairs. It didn't take him longâten minutes at mostâand once everything was settled, he once again slipped into his usual laid-back, idle rhythm.
Meanwhile, back at the Shihouin estate, Yoruichi continued her private training for a while before returning to her room.
The Shihouin Clan's estate was vastâas expected of one of Soul Society's longstanding noble houses. While its fame might not rival the Tsunayashiro, Kuchiki, or former Shiba Clan, the Shihouin lineage had endured without decline, maintaining its prestige for generations.
As the heiressâthe "little princess" of the houseâYoruichi lived in a wing reserved for the clan's future leaders. But her personal quarters hardly reflected noble expectations.
Possibly due to her carefree personality, her room looked more like a battlefield than a boudoir. Neatly folded clothes? Rare. Books in order? Not likely. Her lifestyle already foreshadowed that she would be a different kind of noblewomanâone unconcerned with appearances.
The idea Gosuke Shigure proposed earlier seemed absurd on the surface.
And yet⊠it struck a chord deep within her.
The Shihouin Clan had spent generations developing techniques in Shunpo and Hakuda. Their secret techniques, passed down internally, had already shaped Yoruichi's early training. Her grandfather, in particular, never passed up a chance to brag about creating an advanced Shunpo technique in his youth.
Yoruichi, of course, had long vowed to surpass him one day and invent her own technique.
The problem wasâshe had no clear direction.
Until now.
Gosuke's conceptâcombining KidĆ with Hakuda to forge a new form of close-quarters combatâwas revolutionary.
"No one's ever tried to fuse KidĆ directly with White Hits," Yoruichi muttered.
But the inspiration came with one very inconvenient truth.
"I don't know KidĆâŠ"
Indeed, Yoruichi had trained extensively in Shunpo and Hakuda from a young age under her grandfather's guidance. These disciplines were emphasized in the noble house to prepare her for elite combat rolesâand eventual entry into the Shin'Ć Academy (Spiritual Arts Academy).
However, KidĆâbasic to every Shinigami's educationâwas part of the general curriculum at Shin'Ć, not something taught privately by Shihouin KĆketsu, her grandfather.
She had a solid foundation in physical combat.
But no practical experience with KidĆ.
"So⊠do I have to wait until I enter Shin'Ć Academy before I can test this idea?"
"Or should I just find a way to learn KidĆ now?"
She considered both options.
But the truth was, it was too late to pick up KidĆ training from scratchâespecially with her limited interest in the subject. Compared to Shunpo or Hakuda, KidĆ just felt⊠boring.
Still, if she wanted to test Gosuke's theory, she needed someone with KidĆ proficiency.
"Wait a second⊠maybe someone does know KidĆ already."
A familiar face popped into her mind almost instantly.
Without hesitation, Yoruichi stood up and dashed out of her roomâand out of the main Shihouin house altogether.
The Shihouin estate sat in the heart of the noble district. Surrounding it were smaller estates belonging to lesser noblesâfamilies historically loyal to the Shihouin clan, entrusted with service in exchange for protection and status.
Among them was the Urahara family.
The Urahara were a minor noble familyâone of many in Soul Society. Though noble in name, their quality of life wasn't much better than that of commoners. In some casesâespecially if the household had many mouths to feedâit could be worse.
Maintaining a noble image wasn't cheap, after all. And minor nobles had few means of securing income or resources outside of service to higher houses.
Yoruichi arrived quickly.
She came for a specific reason: a boy in the current Urahara generationâher ageânamed Urahara Kisuke.
Her best friend.
"Kisuke! You home?" she shouted as she arrived outside the modest Urahara compound.
A moment later, a quiet, slightly reserved boy emerged from the house. He had unruly blond curls and thoughtful green eyesâalready showing signs of the brilliant mind he would one day become known for.
Despite his calm demeanor, Kisuke lit up faintly when he saw her.
"Lady Yoruichi," he greeted with a soft, respectful tone.
"Don't call me that," Yoruichi said, waving it off. "We've known each other forever. That's way too formal."
"I'm here because I need your help with something important."
"Kisuke, you know KidĆ, right?"
Kisuke blinked, taken aback.
Even though neither of them had entered the Shin'Ć Academy yet, that wasn't really a barrier.
The Academy, after all, had only been founded around 800 years ago. Before that, noble houses educated their own. And even now, nobles still learned basic artsâincluding KidĆâthrough their families if they had the means and inclination.
Kisuke had always shown a particular interest in KidĆ theory and had begun teaching himself years ago using scrolls from the Urahara house library.
Yoruichi already knew this.
What surprised Kisuke was that she rememberedâand was now here to request help.
He hesitated for a moment, unsure of her intentions.
But loyalty to Yoruichi and the Shihouin name was second nature for someone from a vassal house.
He nodded.
"Yes, I've studied some KidĆ."
"Perfect," Yoruichi grinned.
"I want to run an experiment with you."
"I have an ideaâif it works, we might create a brand-new fighting style."
She said it with total confidence, her voice full of excitement.
Boom!
A loud explosion shook the compound.
Smoke and dust billowed into the air, filling the courtyard.
From within the haze, Yoruichi darted out using Shunpoâher clothing scorched and singed at the edges, her face and arms covered in soot.
She looked completely stunnedâand completely embarrassed.
"Puh! Puh!" she spat twice, trying to clear her mouth of dust and ashes.
She turned to look at Kisuke, who was already standing at a cautious distance, hands raised as if to say, Don't blame me!
Yoruichi glared, but only for a second. Then her expression softened as she muttered under her breath:
"âŠThis shouldn't have happened."
In her head, everything had made perfect sense.
She had a KidĆ specialist.
She had herselfâa master of Shunpo and Hakuda.
They'd mix the two disciplines, create something revolutionary, and she'd prove to her grandfather that his invention was nothing compared to hers.
She had already imagined bragging about it.
But reality had a way of humbling even the most confident.
No warning.
No stability.
Just sudden failureâand then an explosion.
Not the result she was hoping for.
