The technique known as Shunpo is a high-speed movement method employed by the Shinigami. It involves concentrating spiritual pressure (Reiatsu) at the soles of the feet, causing it to burst forth and propel the user's body at high speed.
"For a Shinigami, Shunpo is a fundamental skill," Gosuke Shigure said. "But mastering it to the point of true efficiency is far from easy."
Gosuke Shigure was a man of his word. Since he had agreed to Shihouin Kongchan's request to mentor Yoruichi, he promptly assumed the role of instructor and began training her at one of the private Shihouin family training grounds.
Yoruichi remained in her human form during the lesson. Although the Shihouin family possessed a unique transformation technique allowing them to mimic animals — Yoruichi's form being a black cat — this technique had a notable drawback.
After transforming into an animal, clothing would fall away due to the change in physical structure. When reverting to human form, the individual would be nude. Though Yoruichi was known for her carefree nature, she was still a young girl and not without a sense of modesty. Naturally, she wouldn't risk being naked in front of Gosuke Shigure.
"Typically, the speed of Shunpo depends heavily on Reiatsu," Gosuke explained.
"The stronger the Reiatsu, the more explosive power it generates, allowing for faster propulsion."
A perfect example was Kurosaki Ichigo. Though he learned Shunpo only after acquiring his Shinigami powers, his raw spiritual energy allowed him to execute the technique with overwhelming speed, rivaling even experienced Shinigami.
"However," Gosuke added, "the relation between Shunpo speed and Reiatsu strength is not absolute.
Beyond sheer power, technique is essential. A Shinigami who can control their spiritual pressure precisely — who can time and adjust each burst down to the smallest margin — will be able to execute Shunpo with perfect fluidity."
"In battle, precision is everything. If each step taken is clean and free from delay, it allows more movements within the same timeframe — and that means superior mobility."
At the training ground, Gosuke Shigure explained Shunpo's principles slowly and clearly. While much of it was familiar to Yoruichi — as a member of the Shihouin clan, famed for their mastery of Shunpo and Hakuda (hand-to-hand combat) — she nonetheless gained significant insight from his perspective.
His unique understanding, honed through countless battles, even across lives, gave her new angles to approach her training.
"So what you're saying, teacher," Yoruichi asked, her eyes narrowing thoughtfully,
"is that the reason your Shunpo was so fast that day… was because you don't waste movement?"
She was referring to the day when, as a black cat, she had tried to steal wine from the family cellar. Upon being discovered, she had used Shunpo to flee. But despite moving first, she was effortlessly caught by Gosuke Shigure, who had appeared moments later.
At the time, she had been deeply frustrated.
Now, she was beginning to understand. Her Shunpo had too many unnecessary motions. Even though she moved first, her inefficiency had cost her time — and Gosuke had caught up effortlessly.
Gosuke gave her a few more specific pointers, refining her technique.
Though Yoruichi was already highly adept in Shunpo — a legacy of the Shihouin family — Gosuke's insights, especially those shaped by the harsh experiences of combat, offered invaluable guidance.
Truthfully, even if Gosuke had taught her nothing, Shihouin Kongchan's true goal had already been achieved: the formalization of a master-apprentice relationship between Yoruichi and Gosuke. It was symbolic, a gesture with political significance.
But Yoruichi didn't treat it as mere formality. Once Gosuke genuinely began teaching her, she took it seriously.
After the Shunpo lesson ended, Gosuke sighed thoughtfully.
"In truth, Shunpo isn't even considered an advanced movement technique among all the spiritual races."
Yoruichi paused, halting her practice. Her curiosity was piqued.
"Eh? What do you mean by that, sensei?"
Gosuke smiled slightly.
"It's just a perspective thing. You've heard of the Quincy, haven't you?"
Yoruichi nodded.
"A bit. Weren't they the ones who invaded the Soul Society and got wiped out by the Gotei 13 under the Captain-Commander?"
"Correct," Gosuke said. "Although the Quincy were ultimately defeated, their techniques were nothing to scoff at. In fact, some of their abilities far exceed what we Shinigami have developed. One of them is their movement method — Hirenkyaku."
"Hirenkyaku?" Yoruichi echoed, unfamiliar with the term.
Gosuke continued.
"It's a high-speed movement technique, comparable to — no, superior to — Shunpo in some ways. While we use our Reiatsu to launch ourselves forward, Quincy use their ability to manipulate Reishi — ambient spirit particles — to create footholds in the air beneath their feet."
"In short, they can move midair freely, not relying on terrain at all."
"That's incredible," Yoruichi said, eyes widening.
Indeed, in places like the Soul Society or Hueco Mundo, Shinigami cannot fly or stand in midair unaided because of the dense spiritual atmosphere. They rely on surfaces or strong techniques like Shunpo for mobility. Only in the Human World, where spiritual particles are sparse, can they stand or leap through the sky.
But the Quincy, with their Reishi manipulation, could bypass that rule. Their Hirenkyaku allowed complete three-dimensional movement — a major tactical advantage.
Yoruichi couldn't help but be impressed.
"Of course, Quincy aren't the only ones," Gosuke added.
"Some of the Hollows — particularly the Menos-class in Hueco Mundo — possess a movement technique known as SonĂdo. It's somewhat similar to Shunpo and Hirenkyaku, but it functions on a different principle."
He hesitated, then smiled.
"Actually, SonĂdo's mechanism is more spatial than kinetic — it's like momentary spatial distortion, almost like short-range teleportation. But very few Hollows can use it well. I shouldn't distract you too much with that right now."
Yoruichi's eyes lit up with curiosity at the mention of another advanced technique, but she was quickly deflated by his dismissive ending.
Gosuke noticed her disappointment and chuckled. He didn't elaborate further.
After all, the full breadth of SonĂdo wouldn't become relevant until the emergence of the Arrancar — evolved Hollows with Shinigami powers. At this stage, such beings were only beginning to appear, and information about them remained obscure.
So for now, he held back.
Yoruichi, however, was already forming her own ambitions.
If there were higher forms of movement beyond Shunpo… she would master them.
She would go beyond even the name of Flash Goddess — Shunshin — and make it her own.
