——————————

"No," my voice faintly uttered as my gaze was met with a figure that lifted my mother by her neck.

His one hand held her body upward as her breaths released sounds of death coming.

"No… please—don't," my words expressed.

My body was weak, so weak that it lay on the floor, watching as a humanoid monster called my mother as 'food to be eaten.'

"Gurg-gurg-gurg!"

His hand suddenly tightened as her now-suspended body was shaken by the lack of oxygen entering her bloodstream—she was choking.

Yet, even then, his hold held firm as his eyes glowed lightly red—like the color of a beast.

"Tsk! Tsk, tsk!" the demon's mouth finally made its sound as his expression only widened in delight.

"Sheesh," the demon spoke as he moved his head close to my mother's ear. "It will all be over soon," he faintly uttered.

"I promise, it's only a few minutes of pain and then…" He turned his gaze to mine, his unfinished words still lingering on his lips, "you die."

My expression didn't change—'What was it?'

Was it because I had already given up on running?

Was it the fact that I didn't want to leave my mother behind?

No, it was fear.

The overwhelming feeling of disbelief, the feeling of being truly frightened.

I remember… Yes, a few minutes ago, my mother wanted to tell me to run, she wanted to instruct me to leave her behind and dash for safety—but she couldn't.

Not because the demon's hand had stopped her voice,

Or because his strength had forced her not to speak—it was because of fear.

The fear of being left alone, the fear of dying in lonesome—a feeling so absolute, so powerful, it blemishes moral self-belief,

Blemishing the belief of self-sacrifice.

Then the demon's hand relaxed as I could hear my mother's breaths return to normal.

Her eyes began crying as her gaze couldn't even bring itself to look at my own.

Sobs and endless waters began escaping her lips.

It was "pitiful," spoke the demon as his smile only grew.

Turning his gaze, it locked with mine.

Then, as if in mock, he moved her body closer to the ground, so close that for a second I thought he had shown some type of pity.

Yet I could feel it, with our eyes still locked. I could feel, as if sensing the essence of his being—'he was the devil,' and it would be foolish to expect empathy.

And as the feet of my mother's descending body touched the ground, her knees collapsed.

Then, in a swift motion, he moved his head, and his mouth embraced her neck with a kiss.

She moaned, yet—not in pleasure or in pain, its sound felt different.

And my eyes, seeing the whole occurrence take place, just froze.

The sight refused to disappear—the dream unwilling to leave.

Then I realized, perhaps it came to me rather too late—that this was not a dream.

Her body, as if in response to his kiss, got drained of all its moisture.

Her skin turned grey as her hair fell off. Once a body, now a skeleton with skin—once my mother, now a dead, drained corpse.

"AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!"

My voice was raw, emotional, and untainted.

My body, although that of a small child, bolted up from its laying self.

Its once-stunned little nature awoke with an unknown speed.

And as for the demon—the red-eyed monster didn't even acknowledge my sight.

It was as if my childlike body had given him too much reason to underestimate my strength.

So my figure got close, close enough to gain a view of his now-exposed pale neck, I…

——————————

BEEP BEEP BEEP!

The alarm clock awoke me from my slumber.

The dream—once memory—gone in seconds, feeling like nothing but a nightmare of the past, a nightmare overcome by sleep ending.

Opening my eyes with swiftness, they didn't seem in the slightest tired or in a daze.

They looked rather too relaxed.

And as I sat up and straightened my figure, I extended my hand and flicked my finger to the still-ringing clock that lay four feet away, and, as if by magic—its contraption clicked off, and its sound regained its silence.

'How did I do this,' you might come to wonder. Well… I am a vampire.

And as for why that is—it is because Alucard is dead.

____

Alucard, the original—the only true vampire who has lived for as far as the beginning of the earth—had actually died.

And due to his unknown nature, the moment he died, I gained all of his abilities.

His death, of course, was not due to being killed, but because he felt too tired of living and decided to end his life.

And, as if by fate decided, when a true vampire dies, their power gets transferred to their closest descendant—which in this case is me.

This transfer of power only happened recently—and when I say recently, I mean three days ago.

The transfer not only gave me his power but also his memories.

This means that everything from his abilities to the way he killed himself was implanted into my mind, but unlike what you would expect, these memories didn't come with their own flash drive—so they could only play out like a movie, where I had to watch his whole life in fast-forward for a fraction of what seemed to be less than a second.

So it would be impossible for me to remember everything, but thanks to his abilities, I was able to remember more than any human could possibly be capable of—mostly due to my now-gained vampire-brain intelligence.

____

Raising from my bed, I made my way to the bathroom sink.

Taking out my toothbrush from the cabinet, I started my morning routine of brushing my teeth.

And at the sink—my eyes couldn't help but gain a view of the short-standing bathroom mirror.

'It's only been three days, and my body has changed so much,' I thought to myself, looking at my hair that slightly covered my now purely soft, clean skin.

My eyes, once darker, had now turned brightly colored blue.

Pale skin, yet red, slightly visible blushes at the ends of my cheeks.

A once normal expression, now changed to one of untainted perfection, or in some way, something close—it felt refreshing.

Bang bang!

___

The door broke focus as a knock from the other side rang loud.

"Vlad!" spoke an older woman's voice. "You are going to be late."

"Yeah, I'm almost done," Vlad called back, spitting toothpaste water into the sink, and for a moment, he couldn't help but wonder if it was only a coincidence that he and Alucard shared the same name.

'Because I mean… it's pretty shitty,' he thought as he stormed out of the room, making sure to grab his jacket before his leave.

Leaving once room of nightmare to stay all empty, to stay with shadows of self, shadows of what he wishes to be forgotten—what he wishes to forget.
