Chapter 17 - The Hidden Ranks

"You're right. I have to get a grip on myself. I shouldn't be scared of this stuff.

"But still… this is terrifying. This is brutal. Why do you even need a picture of this?" Luna asked.

Lorenzo replied, **"The picture wasn't taken recently. It was before you married your husband.

"The both of us—when we were sent by the Mafia to kill someone—we had to confirm their death.

"To do that, we had to take a picture and show proof that the target was dead."**

Luna frowned. "You guys are really heartless. And for what? Money?"

Lorenzo sighed. **"You wouldn't understand.

"I know about your father—Patrick, right?

"But even knowing his story, you still wouldn't understand. Because your father was rich. He was wicked, but he was rich.

"You've lived a rich and fancy life, even while being controlled.

"You have no idea what it means to survive on the streets. To be an orphan.

"Your husband is an orphan. I was an orphan.

"He told you that, right? By now, he must have told you."**

Luna nodded. **"Yes, he told me he was an orphan when he was little.

"But when he grew up, he found his parents.

"He wasn't sure if they were really his parents.

"And he didn't forgive his father.

"But still… he decided to take his father's name as his own. That's why he calls himself Mateo.

"You've seen the sign outside, right? The big one on the gate? The one that says 'House of Mateo.'"**

Lorenzo nodded. **"Now that we're already talking about this, I'm going to tell you something else.

"Your husband isn't just at the top of the Mafia. There are different ranks, different families.

"There isn't just one leader. There are different Mafia heads.

"But there is one boss—one man—that all the others have to respect.

"That's the true head of the Mateo family."**

Luna listened carefully as Lorenzo continued, **"Then there's the Gambino family. The Ganetio family. The Astando family. And many more.

"All of them are Mafia.

"And all of them are filthy rich.

"They live like nobility."**

Luna hesitated before asking, **"Now I want to ask you something.

"Where did my husband go?

"He told me he was going to see a friend. But I know it was about Mafia business.

"So who did he go to meet?"**

Lorenzo shook his head. **"To be honest… I don't really know where Mateo went.

"The same way he told you he was meeting a friend, he told me he was going to see someone.

"But he didn't tell me who.

"And I couldn't ask too many questions."**

Luna narrowed her eyes. "Why?"

Lorenzo sighed. "Because… sometimes, if I ask him too many questions, he gets annoyed."

"I think that's enough for now. I'm going back to my room," Luna said as she walked away, feeling exhausted.

Lorenzo watched her leave, his eyes narrowing. Damn. I didn't know Matteo's wife was this evil.

So she was going to frame me? Just to get information?

You hardly ever see a woman pull something like that. She's really creepy.

He muttered to himself before pulling out his phone. The moment Luna was out of sight, he dialed Matteo's number.

"I found the file on Renshi—the one we assigned to Jerry. The mission," Lorenzo said the moment Matteo picked up.

"Good. We'll discuss it more when I'm back," Matteo replied. "For now, just close the office. Make sure no one goes in. I hope you didn't let anyone inside?"

Lorenzo hesitated for a split second before lying. "No, I didn't let anyone in."

"Alright. For now, head to the living room. And don't forget to lock the office. If you're hungry, ask the maid for something to eat. Or just go back to your mansion—it's up to you. You did your job well, so thanks. I'm meeting someone right now."

Lorenzo frowned slightly. "Who are you meeting?"

There was a pause before Matteo responded. "Why do you want to know?"

"I was just asking," Lorenzo said, trying to sound casual.

Matteo's voice was sharp. "If I tell you I'm meeting 'someone,' that means I don't want you to know who. That's why I said 'someone.'"

Lorenzo sighed. "Okay, no problem." He ended the call and exhaled tiredly.

He stood up from the office chair, grabbed the key, and locked the office door before heading to the living room.

As he walked in, he saw the maid sitting on a chair.

"Hey, can I get something to eat? Just a little," Lorenzo asked.

The maid nodded. "Yes, of course."

She stood up and went to the kitchen, preparing a small taco for him while warming up the rest of the food.
